The peaceful valley of Esk is the setting for Danby in the heart of the North York Moors. The village has an interesting history and is home to a 14th Century ruined castle and the last remaining working water mill on the River Esk. The Esk Valley Railway line runs through Danby and takes in some stunning scenery as it winds its way to Whitby. Danby Lodge is a historic building set in 13 acres of beautiful riverside pasture and has an excellent visitor centre with exhibitions, tea-rooms, a gift shop and various walks going through the parkland. The villages of Hutton-le-Hole and Lastingham and the town of Pickering are all within easy reach, as are the coastal villages of Robin Hood's Bay, Staithes, and Saltburn.

"A large well equipped cottage, well sited for both the North Yorkshire Coast and the North Yorkshire Moors. The old mill has been tastefully converted to emphasise the historic features whilst maximising available space. Beds are comfortable and bedrooms have sufficient wardrobe and drawer space. The kitchen is well equipped and roomy with good views of the stables. Living room is light and airy. The owner is very friendly and helpful and a useful welcome pack of break, milk eggs and wine is provided. The cottage is easily travelling distance from Whitby for the Abbey and old town, Robin Hoods Bay, the North York Moors Railway and the city of York with its Minster, the Viking centre of Yorvik and the National Railway Museum which are all recommended. This cottage is at the opposite side of the moors from where we normally stay, but it is one we would definitely return to."

"We had a dreadful journey but arrived to a warm welcome from Pauline, with milk, wine, biscuits & eggs left for us. The property is very spacious ideal for a family. It was nice to see the horses in the yard and also the views were stunning. We lit the wood burner some evenings which warmed the whole house. A real get away from it all property."

"I won't bore you or interest you with a long and verbose account. Suffice to say the acommodation is top notch and interesting at the same time. Quiet location in easy reach of lots of other interesting places, be it the coast or the moors. The owner is always available but not invasive. I would have no hesitation in recommending the Wheelhouse and hope to stay there again."

"Everything about this property was good. Loads of space - more spacious than any other ever visited - and we use these a lot. Upstairs and downstairs bathrooms, so suits elderly people too who may struggle with stairs. Just beware the water issue. It's very heavy in iron, so you would be better to take and use bottled water for tea and coffee, otherwise it's a horrid taste. That's it. Can't fault the place. For good food (excellent food) visit the Jolly Farmer just about 2 miles away, fabulous."

"Spent a great week with family in this spacious cottage. Lovely views from lounge and if you're fond of horses, a most unusual view from kitchen right into racing stables yard! We loved it. You need a car, but plenty to do round about and some good eating places. Near to Whitby, Scarborough etc and only about 20 mins from "Heartbeat" country. We can certainly recommend it."

"the cottage was beautiful, there was horses and foals behind the cottage which you could see them through your windows. the owner was very helpful and kind she showed us around the cottage and also left us a small bottle of red wine, fresh eggs and a box of jaffa cakes which was a lovely treat!!! the rooms where comfortable and clean, the only thing i would say is that the water when having a bath was yellow. suggest a shower which was fine. lovely little villages nearby, and not forgetting the opened fire pubs!! we all felt relaxed and chilled. will be booking again soon."

"The accommodation was perfect and our host was very helpful. This location would suit ramblers better than us as we do not do much walking anymore and it was always at least 25 minutes drive to the nearest suitable restaurant and main town."
