Sedbergh, pronounced Sed-Ber by locals, is an ancient market town in northern Dentdale, situated just inside the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The town itself is full of narrow streets, little shops, traditional pubs and boasts a famous school dating back to 1536. Its 12th century church has an olde worlde atmosphere and is also well worth visiting when looking to discover the town's history. Dentdale is often described as the jewel of the Yorkshire Dales and offers rolling hills and dry stone walls, whilst 14 miles away is the windswept moor of Whernside – the place where the rivers Dee and Rawthey converge. At the centre of the dale is the settlement of Dent, also packed with picturesque cobbled streets – some of which have existed since Norman times. There are three golf courses in the vicinity as well as tennis, riding, and fishing facilities. For those who prefer a peaceful day rambling through the countryside, the area is a walker's paradise.
Reviews
"This cottage was the perfect choice for us. We were wanting a week of peace and quiet to recharge our batteries and were not disappointed! The cottage was warm, cosy and comfortable. The owners were very welcoming and helpful. Fabulous views from the cottage. We were able to visit some of our favourite places. Thank you for a lovely holiday."
"Ideal location to appreciate planet earth in its splendours. Very relaxing surrounding and a thorough view of the Dale fron your window at breakfast. Clean cottage with all facilities and very friendly owners. Highly recommended to everyone."
"Lovely stay , Liky and Alan were so friendly and attended to any request promptly to ensure our stay was comfortable. Beautiful views that cannot be beaten . the cottage was clean and beds comfortable.. Our children loved the dogs and the local villege of sedburgh is a short drive away and known as a book town. We have already booked to come back with friends!"
"Stayed at Knott View as part of a group to celebrate a friend's birthday. We wanted a retreat away from it all where we could spend some quality time together, and it fit the bill perfectly! Everything we needed was available, the setting is just gorgeous and we were even treated to snow! Will definitely stay again."
"What can I say? Knott view was perfect for our long weekend stay for walking and exploring the Yorkshire Dales. Close to Cautley spout and surrounded by absolutely breathtaking views, Birks Farm is the ideal location for any keen walker, or those just looking to get away to the countryside. Knott had everything we needed for our stay; spotlessly clean and tidy, Knott View had a real homely feel. Lilly and Alan were so very welcoming, and it was lovely to stay on a working farm, seeing all the lambs in the field, watching the turkeys pottering round the yard, or just spending some time with their two sheepdogs. Knott was the perfect size for our family, but, having been shown around Brant and the newly refurbished Lodge on site, I absolutely would recommend any three of Lilly and Alans holiday lets for a stay. Will definitely be back soon! Highly recommended all round, and a thoroughly enjoyable break."
"Beautiful location with fabulous views of the Howgills. Clean and comfortable cottage everything we needed, loved the sheep dogs on the farm just what we needed to de-stress. Will be booking later on in the year when the lambs arrive"
"My second time back at Knott View cottage and it was just as good as my previous visit! Stayed with a friend for 2 weeks and would definitely go back. The cottage was clean, homely and well-equipped for self-catering. The owners were very friendly and helpful with any queries we had. There are stunning views of the Yorkshire Dales and beautiful walks to enjoy the wildlife and lambs at lambing time! We would highly recommend to anyone wanting a relaxing escape!"
"We stayed here with a couple of friends, what a dump, No heating only oil heaters that you had to move around, the most dirtiest baked on food on all the saucepans and frying pan. The dead spiders and flies had been on floor for a long time. We like dogs but do not want them barking for the whole of your holiday. We saw dead sheep and carcass everytime we drove out of the cottage. I am not sure of the previous reviews BUT they do not sound like it was the same cottage."
"Lovely cottage in the middle of stunning countryside..Went with two 5yr olds and there was plenty of things to go to within a 45min drive of the cottage. Also walks in the surrounding area can be done from the front door of the cottage. The farm itself was child friendly, the kids particularly loved playing with the dogs. We are planning to go back again next year."
"This holiday was different from what we normally do,but it was fantastic. We went with our son and daughter in law. What a lovely clean, comfortable, cottage, and Lily and Alan the owners were very friendly and obliging. We visited loads of the attractions in the area, and what beautiful countryside it is. The views from the cottage were beautiful as well. We can,t sign off without a mention of Benny,Jess and Pip.the lovely 3 collin dogs. We would recommend this place to anyone. Maggie and Vince and Kev. and Ali."
"It is one of the most relaxing holidays we have ever had, there was great facilities, really kind and nice owners, and the cottage is in the best place depending on if you want to go to the lake district or the Yorkshire dales its absolutely fantastic."
"i would without a doubt highly recommend to anyone wanting a relaxing, enjoyable get away to stay in this modern, yet traditional barn conversion ( with views to die for.) The accomadation is conceniently situated between the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Lake District.Me and my family managed to fit in several visitations which was only made possible b the owners of the holiday cottages as they supplied the cottage with many booklets and leaflets on recommeneded, top notch places to go! Although we visited many local places, we did enjoy staying on the farm as there was 3 very friendly, entertaining sheepdogs keen to play and entertain ou young children! There was also hens and turkeys roaming around, plus lots of gambling lambs! Our children really did get a look into what a traditional farm is like and they absoloutley loved it! We stayed for a week, me, my wife and our two kids and not one of us wanted to leave! The bedrooms were clean, modern and well equiped with all the necessities! The bathroom, kitchen, living room and dining room were all lovely! On a whole, the holiday cottage was a delightful place to stay and so was the other holiday cottage which was next door! The holiday cottage is surrounded by breath taking views and i recomend the cottages to anyone, families, couples, large goups of friends, anyone! We shall hope to go back next year as it is one of the best holiday cottages we have stayed in."
"We stayed here with our young children in February for 5 days. It is the perfect base for lots of scenic family walks. The owners were really friendly and helpful. Our children loved playing with their friendly dogs any time they could. We didn't want to leave and will definitely stay there again in the future."
"Knott View is the perfect cottage for visiting the Dales/Lakes. Alan and Lily are great hosts. The cottage is comfy and has everything you need for a great holiday."
"It was fantastic. Very nice owners, great accomodation and the view was great!! The house had everyting you need, a well equiped kitchen and very nice beds. Bedlinnen and towels are included and there is a washingmachine (and dryer) Nearby are the shops and in the cottage are a lot of brochures and maps of things to do. And there is a lot to do and to see. It is not far from the Lake District and James Herriot "country" I think I will come back again."
"One of the best cottages we have ever stayed in, well equipped, cosy and comfortable with beautiful views. The owners (and dogs!) are very friendly and gave us a warm welcome. A week was not enough time to see everything this area has to offer so we'll definitely come back here again!"
"A comfortable cottage with lovely views; great for visiting the Howgill Fells and Sedbergh. Lovely views. Friendly owners and sheepdogs!"
"The cottage is easy to find, even in the dark and on a rainy night! Yes, up a private hill and what a view! It is a great place to stay if you want to reach the Lakes and the Dales at equal driving distance. The cottage is very well kept and the surroundings are safe for young teenagers, even to play (with the very friendly dogs)."
"Knotts view was tucked away up a long drive off of a main road. It was surrounded by beautiful countryside. The cottage was warm and well maintained and had everything we needed to make our stay a pleasurable one.We was well placed to visit the Lake district and Yorkshire. We had a fantastic stay there and would recommend Knotts view to anyone wanting a quiet stay in the country or for easy reach of the Lake district and Dales. The owners were really helpful and welcoming too."
"We received a warm welcome as soon as we arrived and were shown around both lovely cottages by the friendly owner. The smaller cottage is great for small families and the larger of the two is large enough to accomodate the whole party for meals and getting together if, like us, you take both cottages. There are excellent walks around Sedburgh and Kendal is only a 30 minutes drive away. Bookworms will enjoy a visit to the Town of Sedburgh which has many specialist bookshops. These cottages are both super places from which to explore this beautiful part of the world."
