The charming village of Grosmont is situated at the juncture of the Murk Esk and the River Esk in the middle of the dramatic moors scenery. Characterised by scenic views, steep hills and narrow roads with a miscellany of fields and moorland expanses, Grosmont is the home of the famous North York Moors Steam Railway and has a 1952 style British Rail station and engine sheds, where the trains receive much needed restoration. The railway has been run by enthusiasts since 1973 and takes around 200,000 passengers a year on its scenic journey through the stunning countryside. The village has a general store, café, pub and post office and is well placed for exploring the wider area, making this a fabulous base for an unforgettable holiday.

"Wychwood has to be one of the best cottages we have stayed in. It is beautiful on the outside with its floral draped pergola, and gorgeous in the inside with superb decor, fixtures and fittings. We were travelling with two elderly dogs so the ability for us to sleep on the ground floor was a great advantage and part of the reason we chose this cottage. One of the other reasons was that everywhere was carpeted (except for the kitchen and boot room) So many dog-friendly cottages have laminate or tiled floors for understandable reasons but, when you have two 16 year old dogs, skittering around on slippy hard floors isn't an option. Once they fall down they struggle to get up again. Every room was finished and furnished to a really high standard. Every single detail had been considered. The beds were comfortable and sowers the sofa and lounge chairs - a simple request, but one often not satisfied. We arrived to be greeted with a welcome tray, and very welcome it was. We had everything we needed to make tea and coffee including milk in the fridge. The washer/drier was also really useful. We actually came home with only a handful of washing - not bad for a week away! The little garden was a lovely addition. Unfortunately it isn't directly accessed from the house but rather, down a little shared path. This was fine except for when we needed to let the dogs out for a wee - they had to be supervised. It's not a busy road by any stretch but they are old and tend to wander off! I loved to get up early and sit in the garden in my dressing gown with a cup of tea. The location of the cottage is perfect for us, with the steam railway and the main line just a few hundred yards down the hill. The pub there is also very handy - not posh, a real pub but friendly and with good food. All in all a wonderful cottage, a fantastic weeks holiday and we wouldn't hesitate to go back again."

"We were looking for somewhere quiet to stay as a base to explore this part of Yorkshire, and Wychwood in Grosmont was ideal for us. The cottage was very clean and well equipped. One room downstairs had been converted to a third bedroom, meaning besides the large kitchen diner there was only a modest sized lounge, but this was more than adequate for us - we were on holiday and didn't spend much time inside! Two further bedrooms upstairs meant there was ample room to sleep 5 people. A modern bathroom with towels provided completed the upstairs area. There was an attractive looking fireplace in the lounge with a wood burner fire, but being summer we never got to use it. There was also a small garden to the rear with a table and 4 chairs. A parking space for 2 cars completed the property. Wychwood is down a quiet lane with no passing traffic. It is literally 2-3 minutes walk to the middle of Grosmont which is a small village comprising 1 pub and train station, 1 convenience store and a number of tea rooms and an art gallery. There is also a souvenir shop. The pub is very friendly and serves large portions of well prepared meals. A useful tip, if you wish to visit the pub for an evening meal, then booking a table in advance is recommended. There is a steam train running from the station with a service that runs to Whitby. The cottage allows one well behaved dog. We took our pet and he loved the many footpaths through woods and across the surrounding hills where we walked him. All in all Wychwood suited our needs perfectly and we enjoyed our week here."

"Staying here during a very windy week. We chose to use the upstairs twin room due to the proximity to the bathroom for nocturnal excursions!! This proved to be a wise choice as the downstairs double room remained very chilly all week even with the log fire burning and the central heating on. The entrance porch was freezing cold all week. Stairs are quite steep not suitable for the infirm and the only loo is upstairs. The cottage is well decorated and the kitchen is one the best equipped I have ever stayed in. On betting my partner that there would be no pastry brush - I lost!!! The standard of furnishing and bedding is high. The twin beds were certainly most comfortable. Excellent dog walks straight off the premises. In all a good cottage, but I wouldn't go again in winter!!"

"The cottage was well presented and very clean, with all the amenities that you need for a holiday. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen was fabulous. We spent nearly every evening sat in the garden. The cottage was ideally located for the NYMR, being a steam train fanatic family we walked daily into the village for either travelling on the train or watching the trains. We had some lovely walks in the area and thoroughly enjoyed our stay."

"Spacious 3 bedroom cottage in attractive location. Clean and tidy with good utilities. Unfortunately, like others before, we were plagued with noise from the cockerels next door. There's a loud crowing that starts at 03:45 every morning and continues intermittently until after 07:00. It happens within about 3 to 4 metres from the main bedroom window. This meant moving into the small single bed at the front of the cottage. This bed was uncomfortable with a thin mattress and the bed creaked a lot. So our sleep was disturbed and we cut the stay short by a day. I know that this is the sound of the country, but so loud and so near?? If you'r gong to go there in a big car be aware that parking involves a lot of very careful manoeuvring around the locals vans to actually reach the property. Main bedroom needs secondary double glazing and the single beds need to be of a better quality"

"We returned for October half term - exactly a year after our last visit. The cottage was as welcoming and cosy as the previous year. The owners must be commended for maintaining this cottage so well. It was spotlessly clean and well equipped. We had another wonderful stay - this time we managed dinner at the local pub. We had steak pie - homemade and really delicious. Our days were easy to fill by walking on the Yorkshire Moors and visiting Whitby by train."

"Vendor was very helpful, Sykes were extremely professional and administratively could not be faulted. A long overdue weekend spend in delightful cottage; very very clean, well equipped and well presented, warm and very cosy with a superb wood burning stove... So warm. The location was brilliant; interesting and fabulous village with good facilities, lovely welcoming villagers. Nice drive into Whitby bay and a very welcoming cottage to come back to. We took MaX - 8 year old Westie - he thought it was "magic" - the cottage is ideal for taking a pet, as are all the beautiful walks in Grosmont and in fact all the surrounding areas. Liked best the whole atmosphere of cottage and the village; was like stepping back in time. Least liked ... Having to come back home so soon!!"

"We stayed at Wychwood in October half term. There were 6 of us - my family (2 adults / 2 teenagers) and my parents. Most importantly, we were able to take our beloved Benny, the dog. We arrived in foul weather to a welcoming cottage. The heating was on - and even though the downstairs room is slightly chilly, it is still too lovley not to sleep in. The kitchen is incredibly well equipped - all useful cooking aids/utensils. The sitting room is lovely - the wood burner is efficient and we spent our evenings snug & cosy! We were slightly concerned at only one bathroom - but it wasn't too bad. The upstairs rooms are of a reasonable size and warm. The stairs are slightly steep - but I am a wimp on stairs... Easy parking for 2 cars. The porch at the front of the house is fab...especially in October - it was great for coats, boots and a wet dog. Grosmont is truly delightful - the Nymr steam railway was a hit, even with our teenage son. There is also a Northern Rail link to Whitby. The cafe in the old school is wonderful. We spent an afternoon enjoying yummy cake & hot chocolate. The village shop is only a 5 minute walk away (max) downhill - slightly longer on uphill going back...it stocks pretty much all the essentials including logs for the fire. The pub, is thankfully a bit closer...All in all, we had a lovley week away in a very reasonably priced cottage."

"This accomodation was very clean & comfortable with a well equipped kitchen and good quality fixtures and fittings. There was a note left for us from the Cleaner to say the Grill didn't work, but she had reported this to the owner. There was a new toaster in situ , so it was not a problem It was pre arranged to phone the owners 48hrs before arrival to be told of the' key safe' code number so we could access the house keys. We were asked to take our own towels. although tea towels & bedding were provided. The twin bedroom had wooden slats as a base to the beds, but they were comfortable enough. The dining area was rather gloomy even though it was bright sunshine, so we had to have the lights on . But thats to be expected with old properties I guess. Be aware of the unadopted access road to get to this property. Hopfully you will arrive in a 4 x 4 ! Because of this we would not rebook... andbecause of the condition of the road we would not recomend to friends, mainly because they drive MG's and other low slung cars. Having said all of this, you cannot fault the property itself."

"Clean accommodation on arrival with welcome pack. This was our second visit to Wychwood. The cottage is very homely and in an accessible area to tour North Yorks Coast and Moors. Never bored in Grosmont with the railway and range of lovely cafes. what I did not like was being woken by the cockerals at 4am every morning. Unfortunately as much as I like this cottage I would not return again due to the noise and lack of sleep. I now would not recommend this rental due to the noise unless it was for people hard of hearing."

"The cottage was lovely. Well equipped and very clean. Easy access to all locations. Much appreciated welcome pack. No DVD player as advertised but not a problem. Freesat available so plenty of tv to watch. Plenty of room to park our car but access to the property is tight. Having said that we managed. We've hired a few cottages over the last few years and up to press this has been the best."

"The cottage was lovely. Everything you could want was provided. The cottage was very clean. The location was good. Down in the valley. The is very very steep hills to get in and out of Grosmont village. The local pub was good. Parking was tight for two cars but it is possible."

"We liked the house -it was very warm and cosy= except for the downstairs bedroom which was freezing so we ended up sleeping upstairs in the twin bedroom - would not usually have been our first choice. Otherwise location is superb, amenities great and I'm sure the double bedroom would be great when it was warmer. But for a cold weekend in November it was almost uninhabitable."

"OUR COTTAGE IN GROSMONT WAS DOWN A NARROW COUNTRY ROAD ALONGSIDE OTHER COTTAGES THE NEIGHBOURHOOD WAS QUIET AND VIEW FROM THE HOUSE TO RAILWAY LINE REMINDED ONE OF THE FILM THE RAILWAY CHILDREN. THE CHILDREN'S BEDROOM WAS LIKE A SMALL OLD FASHIONED ROOM WITH A DEEP STEP DOWN AND MY DAUGHTER LOVED SLEEPING THERE. THE ONLY ISSUES I HAD ARE THE LIGHTING IN LOUNGE NEEDED TO BRIGHTER AND THE TV RECEPTION WAS POOR. AND THE BIG PICTURES IN THE GUEST ROOM OF BIRDS OF PREY WERE OVERPOWERING. THE ROOM ITSELF WAS LOVELY AND THE BED VERY COMFORTABLE. THE KITCHEN WAS SPACIOUS AND THE TABLE WAS PLENTY BIG ENOUGH FOR A FAMILY TO EAT A MEAL COMFORTABLE. THEIR WERE PLENTY OF BROCHURES AND IT WAS VERY HANDY FOR THE RAILWAY AND THERE WAS LOTS TO DO INTHE SURROUNDING AREA. IT WOULD BE HELPFUL TO VISITORS IF THE TV WAS IN GOOD WORKING ORDER AND CHECKED REGULARY TO SEE IT OK. AND THE LIGHTING IMPROVED I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS AS A QUIET RETREAT FOR A COUPLE OR A FAMILY WITH ONE CHILD."

"This home was a great week break for a couple with 2 young kids, a mother-in-law and a well-behaved dog. It was walking distance to great little shops & fabulous heritage railway. We walked to a local stream and splashed and paddled - it was great! We took diverse day trips to Sands End beach, Whitby and walks into the Moors very easily without the kids getting bored with the travel. The house had everything we could have wanted EXCEPT matches - it had wood for the fire, BBQ, etc. but no matches or lighter! We borrowed from a neighbor. The kids were happy with the DVD player, the garden was used for BBQ and small bites, the kitchen supplied all we could want, the linens were fine, enough room to store gear, good entry for shoes and wet bits, area to tie dog outside til walk-time. Overall, a nice holiday to remember! Thanks!"

"We stayed in this cottage for a week in March and tried to get booked there again later in the year but couldnt. I can honestly say this was one of the best cottages we have ever stayed in and we had a fantastic week. The kitchen had everything we could want and the cottage itself with its log fire was very comfy. North yorkshire and Grosmont in particular is one of our favourite places to be. We will be back if we can get booked."
