The village of Hamsterley sits on the brow of a hill between Teesdale and Weardale, on the edge of the North Pennines. Boasting an old village pub, where basic provisions can be purchased, the village is just two miles from Hamsterley Forest, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which covers 2000 hectares of mixed woodland and has an abundance of wildlife. The Forest Visitor Centre, complete with tea rooms, provides visitors with a wealth of information on the many activities available in the forest, including splendid walking, cycling and horse riding trails to suit all levels of expertise. Cycling enthusiasts will be well catered for with the Hamsterley Forest mountain bike downhill trail which has some of the steepest slopes in the UK, together with miles of cross country routes. The forest runs alongside the Bedburn Beck for four miles, providing access to grassy picnic sites and a play area for children, and also stages a wide range of events and activities every summer, from wildlife watches to theatre performances, and the Dark Skies Events are coming to the forest, with introductions to astronomy from trained instructors. With Raby Castle nearby and the delightful market town of Barnard Castle, with its medieval castle ruins and delightful cobbled streets, just 8 miles away, this is an ideal holiday location. The ancient cathedral city of Durham is also close by and is host to a number of events throughout the year so it is well worth checking what you can see while you are in the area.
Reviews
"Great accommodation, fantastic cottage with everything (and more) that you need for a self catering holiday. Stayed for a long weekend to visit Beamish and Durham. The cottage was spotlessly clean and very well equipped, full of all mod cons, really was a home from home, you won't want for nothing here. A welcome pack was left for us on arrival, along with a home baked cake (which was lovely, thank you very much) The location is in beautiful countryside and very, very peaceful. Probably the best cottage we have stayed in (everything considered) and will definitely return. Couldn't find fault with the cottage at all, can highly recommend to anyone who wants to stay in County Durham, a real credit to the owners. Thanks for a wonderful stay."
"Fantastic place to spend a few quiet days. Well equipped and Carol attentive to every request. Well stocked with food made for a very pleasant stay in a warm, cosy cottage. Would definitely return for more spoiling! The snow which fell added to the outdoor scenery. Horses in the field outside the cottage and sheep grazing on the hills. Lovely setting fast outside a small village about 5 miles from Bishop Auckland. Ideal for a stay with dogs or children."
"Out of all the cottages we have stayed in over the past 20 years or so, this is undoubtedly the most impressive. The cottage is quiet, warm, spacious, has amazing views, and is situated in a very good spot for visiting the beautiful Durham dales, and even further afield. But the most eye-catching fetaure was the welcome pack, which went way beyond the necessary, and offered an incredible array of foods - absolutely wonderful, and congratulations to the very helpful owners who sorted out our single problem immediately (a problem which had been caused by the previous week's visitors)."
"Spent a very enjoyable week in this lovely cottage. It is warm and comfortable and the owners have provided everything you could need or want. There is a very generous welcome pack including delicious homemade cake. The location is perfect for enjoying beautiful views over the countryside and there are interesting places to visit within a short drive. There are also good eating places around the area. This is definitely a place I would be happy to go back to."
"This cottage exceeded our expectations, located in a very peaceful area with lovely views of the surrounding countryside. Modern and clean and fresh and with a welcome pack to beat all others including a delicious homemade cake. We did not meet the owners who lived in the farmhouse next door but contact details were there if needed in an information pack. Recommended and would hope to return in the future."
