A small and compact village, Ravenstonedale has much to offer the visitor seeking a quieter experience than the nearby Lake District National Park provides. It is a pretty village; traditional whitewashed stone cottages and stone walls border the fields, whilst the Raven brook trickles by. St Oswald's church is largely from the Georgian era, comprising a solid structure with a simple square tower. In addition, there are elements from older buildings incorporated in it, and the base of a Saxon cross just outside. To the north of the church, excavations in 1920 revealed the foundations of a 13th Century Gilbertine Abbey. Ravenstonedale is a fantastic base for exploring the Lakes to the west or the Yorkshire Dales, just a short drive to the east. Those who prefer to stay closer to home can explore the Howgill Fells, the rounded hills which signal the start of the Lakeland ranges.
Reviews
"We have stayed in a fair number of holiday cottages over the past eighteen years and only ever found one other to match this one for perfection. A beautiful cottage in a beautiful setting, well off the beaten track and perfect for those of us who want to escape the noise of traffic and general background noise. The only things you will hear here is the occasional sheep in the fields and the local farmer a couple of times a day going past. The views from the bedrooms and living room are wonderful, the cottage was very clean and tidy, and also very well stocked. There are even two fridges! The broadband IS superfast - I managed 20MB/sec. and there is an perfectly excellent mobile signal if you are on GiffGaff/O2. If I had any complaint at all it would be that some of the floor boards on the upstairs landing creak quite loudly when walking across them, which seems more noticable at night. Other than that, a perfect stay in a perfect setting."
"We had a brilliant stay at Sally End over christmas. Lots of little touches around the house that made our holiday special, my children loved feeding the birds on a morning with the bird food left for us to use. Beautiful views from every window. Lovely helpful owners who even posted a few bits and bobs back to us we had left behind. Would definitely recommend to anyone wanting a peaceful retreat."
"this was our 2nd visit to sally end and it was even better than I remembered - the location really is outstanding. from the garden we saw a red squirrel, a weasel and a sparrow hawk as well as a wide variety of garden birds. there are many walks from the door, and the surrounding area has so much to explore. the cottage keepers are pleasant and accommodating, and the local people are friendly and helpful - we have an 18 month old and nothing was too much trouble. the aga is constantly warm and toasty - wed definitely book again. thankyou."
"We were kept waiting to check in we were told because of cleaning and I don't think I have ever booked a cottage that was as dirty . This was taken up with the with the company Sykes who we rate very highly and the management company who were also the cleaners came to cottage and said they did not know what we were complaining about .Very dirty equipment, utensils. We did not expect Buckingham palace with an old cottage but the least you expect is for it to be clean. The people suggested maybe it was because we had disabled children with us which was very offensive. We stay in many old cottages each year but this one was not acceptable or peoples attitudes !! We did receive a full refund after a fuss. Many thanks to Sykes who we always book through , they were great."
"Off the beaten track, just how we like it. Very cosy in the kitchen with the aga, and beautiful views from the back garden overlooking the hills. Two nice decent-sized bedrooms upstairs, one with a skylight, would be a really nice feature in the warm summer evenings. Really quiet area, possibly too quiet for families with children but ideal for us. A great place to relax and unwind."
