Reviews
"Acorn Cottage is in a picturesque location and ideally situated for travelling to the many interesting places in this beautiful area. The cottage far exceeded our expectations being spacious whilst retaining a cosy feel. It was beautifully presented, immaculately clean and provided everything needed for a perfect stay. There is an enclosed and private garden with garden furniture ideal for enjoying a relaxing breakfast and/or an evening meal and a safe area for children to play. We were given a warm welcome on our arrival and entered the cottage to find milk in the fridge, eggs form the owners chickens and homemade shortbread biscuits which were delicious. Thank you Jo and Veronica we will definitely be returning"
"We stayed in Acorn Cottage over the Christmas period in 2018. The cottage is in a great location - you feel like you're in the middle of nowhere, but it's not far at all to local pubs/restaurants, shops and other amenities, and it's a great base for exploring the Peak District. The cottage has ample parking for a couple of cars and is lovely inside - in winter it was very cosy with a woodburner in the lounge, and in summer I imagine it's nice sitting out in the garden or in the summerhouse. You'll find everything you need inside, and if there's anything extra you require (e.g. we needed another roasting dish to make Christmas dinner) then the owners Jo and Veronica are more than happy to oblige. In fact, Jo and Veronica were the best thing about this cottage. They made us feel so welcome with homemade mince pies, eggs, a Christmas card and even a few Christmas presents waiting for us when we got there. They've put together a few helpful folders of information such as local walks with dogs, general things to do in the area, recommended restaurants and takeaways... all of which we found very useful. They provided treats, bags and a bed for our dog (and a stair gate which was handy to stop her going upstairs), and they even brought their foster donkeys down to see us, which was a lovely thought. When our Christmas took an unexpected turn due to ill health, Jo and Veronica went out of their way to help us, which we really really appreciated. We'd love to go back one day - if not to the cottage then to the B&B which they run in their house opposite. Thank you again for everything!"
"Great location down country road, like the little touches of the eggs and biscuits, very quiet stay, great rest for us, nice walks and maps provided, but be prepared to stay out longer than stated, as we spent time just watching the wildlife, local sights and towns were within easy reach and the food available from the pubs was very nice (we followed the hosts suggestions on this!!), dog friendly as well! Enjoyed it so will be back next year"
"We had a fantastic holiday! So much to do in the area, we have already decided to go back next year. If you want a perfect location for many derbyshire attractions you have the right place. The cottage is in a quiet location, spotless and the owners can't do enough to make your stay enjoyable and comfortable. All with the added attraction on a farm with local produce available."
"We had a fantastic 2 weeks in Acorn Cottage. The cottage is very comfortable and also very peaceful. There is a pretty private garden which because of great weather we made good use of. Jo and Veronica are great hosts and will even cook you breakfast if you so desire! The farm is lovely, pigs, sheep and lambs, hens and donkeys. It is about a mile out of Ashover which is a pretty village and has a butchers which seems to sell everything! We would certainly recommend Acorn Cottage."
"Acorn cottage is a brilliant place to stay when in Derbyshire. Veronica and Jo are excellent hosts who were always available to help you if required. We were staying in the B&B which is on the side of their house and my boyfriends parents and sister in the cottage. On arrival there were homemade biscuits and fresh eggs from their chickens waiting for us. They keep cows, pigs, chickens, sheep and donkey and you are able to buy their own sausages, eggs and bacon. Even though it is self catering they will cook you a breakfast upon request, I can't remember how much this costs though. The location is excellent, 10 mins to Matlock and 15 mins to chesterfield and 15 mins to bakewell (would recommend the market pub in chesterfield). They provided folders with all the info we could ever need, menus for pubs and takeaways, leaflets of things to do, dog friendly pubs and walks. Upon request they printed a walk and map for us which was great and you are able to walk around their fields for a shorter walk. The cottage was clean and has everything we could ever need! It is a dog friendly cottage and they do ask that your dog doesn't go upstairs or on the furniture. If like us your dog is used to going upstairs there is a stair gate that you can put on the bottom of the stairs to stop them going up. You're able to leave your dog in the cottage alone but only in a crate, we have our own which we look but I believe they can give you one of you don't have one. There's lots of dog friendly pubs around though so they don't need to be left alone. Great place to stay and would love to go back!!"
"It was the perfect cottage for our family. It was clean, lots of room for us, very welcome feeling, and well situated for peak district visits. We have spend a week here, wish we had booked for at least a month.... We could not have wished for a better holiday. "
"Acorn cottage is one of the nicest and not to mention, cleanest , we have ever stayed in. It is obvious that the owners (who we didn't meet unfortunately due to them having a holiday themselves)take the upmost pride and care in their property. There was a lovely welcome pack when we arrived which made it feel extra special ..also, little touches like travel size toiletries and fresh towels were also included. .very hotel style! We certainly will be booking again as there is plenty to do in the area..really enjoyed staying."
"We had an absolutely superb stay in this lovely secluded cottage. It had everything we needed in equipment and comfort terms. Warm, despite the sub zero outside temperature and very comfortable. Our Springer Spaniel was made to feel very welcome, a bed, dish and biscuits were supplied, as was a hint of rabbits in the garden! We were so impressed that we tried to book again whilst there, but sadly our dates had already been taken"
"A little gem of a cottage with little touches that make it extra special. We were left fresh eggs preserves milk and cookies. The cottage is cosy yet spacious and close to loads of interesting places to visit. We did not want to travel far but wanted a place to enjoy New Year's Eve with friends. Ashover has 3 pubs to visit and is a lovely 45 min walk with our dog. There is a pub at the end of the lane just a short 10 min walk where we were made very welcome for an early New Year's Eve drink. More than anything we enjoyed the log fire and the doorstep walks with the dog who loved the enclosed garden. Veronica and Jo have thought of everything. Well worth the visit. Sharon Abbott"
"Beautiful cottage, A real home from home with everything you need for a relaxing stay. This was our third stay at Acorn & we have just booked again for next year, Lovely location for a pre xmas relax."
"My cousin and I have stayed at Acord Cottage twice now. Last September, and now this year too. We meet up there as we live in opposite sides of the country. It is quiet and peaceful, and Veronica and Jo are the nicest people and nothing is too much trouble. There is always a cake and some fresh eggs waiting for us on our arrival. Easy parking too! I have never stayed anywhere else that is as clean as this cottage. Plenty of space also. Takes a bit of finding, so use your sat nav! But well worth the effort. Would thoroughly recommend it."
"The cottage was very clean, warm and cosy but at the same time spacious. The cottage is on the owners small holding and it was amazing seeing all the animals especially the piglets. The location is was very peaceful and relaxing and it was lovely being able to sit out in the garden for breakfast waiting for the robin to visit. The cottage has everything you need and a nice welcome pack which included "blue" eggs and honey. Lots of little extras. Jo and Veronica are friendly and welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. We will visit again."
"We have jus returned from a fabulous stay at acorn cottage ... Cannot praise it enough. We loved every minute. Walking in to the lights on and a cosy warm place all ready for Us as we was arriving late. It's the little things that impress. Even more impressive was the scrumptious lemon drizzle cake and eggs from the resident Hens. Well equipped cottage for dining even fully stocked Cleaning provisions. Bin liners. Even foil and cling film. The doggies are thought of too with towels And dog bed/ water bowls. Even poop bags and the offer to borrow leafs etc if forgotten your own. Cannot praise this place enough. Cannot wait to return. Thanks Jo & Veronica"
"I can describe Acorn Cottage, Jo & Veronica in one word . . . FABULOUS! Everything far exceeded my expectations. The only negative I have is that my husband & I did not stay here for the 14 weeks we were in Derbyshire in 2013 because we didn't know about the cottage. Now I know, but it looks like it might be quite difficult booking for several months as everyone who stays here will always book again. Thank you Jo & Veronica for offering such an idyllic setting & cottage. Out of all the self catering I've stayed at in England, Scotland & Wales, this is by far the BEST. Cheers!"
"This is an outstanding cottage, the best we have stayed in. The accommodation is excellent and the welcome received from Veronica and Jo was quite special. A card, cake, eggs from their hens, and honey from their bees . There was even a bed for the dog, in case you had forgotten to bring one! The cottage is very well equipped, spotlessly clean and the beds are very comfortable. The dog had an enclosed private garden to play in and plenty of quiet lanes and open fields to explore. The cottage is very well situated for visiting all that the Peak District has to offer and their are four excellent pubs nearby. We couldn't have asked for more!"
"Acorn Cottage is a beautiful converted barn in a lovely quiet location. We found it to be very clean and well equipped with great attention to detail. The owners Veronica and Jo went out of their way to ensure we had everything we needed for the perfect holiday. Nothing was too much trouble and they made several recommendations on what to do and where to go in the vicinity. A welcome pack was provided and greatly appreciated. The cottage was furnished to a very high standard and was warm and cosy. Acorn Cottage is well situated for visiting towns such as Matlock and Bakewell and impressive houses such as Chatsworth House. Having stayed in many properties throughout the country this must be one of the nicest and we will certainly return at some time in the future."
"We have had a lovely week in Acorn Cottage. The cottage is lovely as are the owners. The location is perfect, so many lovely dog walks from the doorstep. The cottage is a great location for Bakewell, Matlock, Chesterfield, Alton Towers but is in a quiet hamlet with great views. I cannot recommend this cottage highly enough."
"What a lovely cottage, well equipped, cosy, and quiet. Jo and Veronica were very welcoming, from the lovely home made biscuits, their own free range eggs and lots of little extras. Loved helping with the animals, and an added extra we had snow.... No wonder they are booked up till after October, we shall be back next year!"
"Great location for walking, pubs, shops and unloading the car is quick, as it's parked beside front door. Jo & Veronica are extremely helpful and keep the cottage to a very high standard. It's very well equipped for dogs and humans, lots of unexpected extras, plenty of bin bags toilet roll etc. Nice touch on arrival of cake, milk and eggs, or in our case a real Christmas tree, crackers, mulled wine and mince pies. This is our THIRD visit and we have booked again!"
"We stayed here with our daughter and her husband and their 1-year-old daughter and must say it far exceeded ALL our expectations. Immaculately clean with every amenity you could ever need, and looked after by two of the nicest people you could wish to find and only too pleased to assist you if you needed anything. The cottage is a recent (2 years old) barn conversion situated down a narrow lane in a beautiful valley with extensive views once you leave the drive. The garden is well maintained and the lawned area in safe and secure behind a dry stone wall and gate... so great for kids. There is ample parking and if the weather is as good as we had you will not need to venture far. Well placed for the local attractions, and excellent an Pub and Farm Shop a short drive. This is by far the best place we have ever stayed at and intend to return."
"I went to this cottage with my 13 year-old daughter who chose this cottage it was lovely, very friendly owners and animals, my daughter helped out with the working farm and she loved it. it is a very well warming- welcome, we were very lucky to get nice weather. My only reservation is to provide more cooking utensils i.e salad bowls, pie dish to put lasagna in."
"My husband and I stayed for one week here with our 3 yr old and dog. What an amazing cottage and a truly warm welcome from the owners. The cottage has everything you could wish for with lots of extras thrown in which gives it a vey homely feel. There are some excellent things to see and do both locally and further afield and the owners are more than willing to point you in the right direction if you are stuck for ideas! I would whole heartedly recommend this cottage not only for its character and comfort but for the amazing hospitality shown by the owners. We hope to visit again."
"Acorn cottage was a lovely place to spend a holiday. We found it central to all the tourist spots. We enjoyed the surrounding area and views. We had a few mealsat chatworth house restaurant. Shopping for bakewell puddings in bakewell. Will try and visitagain in the summer time. "
"My wife and I accompanied by our two teenage kids stayed here towards the end of June beginning of July and it was the best accommodation in our entire trip to the UK. The owners are very friendly and welcoming people and we could not have wished for better. The cottage is charming and a perfect base to go to nearby areas for sightseeing and to soak up English countryside life."
"Stayed for one week but wished I had booked two. The cottage has everything you need and more; even the dog had been considered with a bed, snacks and poo bags! There was a welcome pack for the humans which consisted of wine, biscuits, eggs and milk. The cottage is tastefully furnished, spotlessly clean and very comfortable. Of all the cottages I have stayed, this is the best - excellent value for money and the owners were really helpful - nothing was too much trouble. (Try their sage and red onion sausages!) The garden was a peaceful space and secure. Great walks from the end of the drive and if you to travel want further afield, there is plenty to do. Will definitely visit again."
"On arrival at Acorn cottage we were met by the owners who gave us a very warm welcome, invited us in and gave us lots of information about the local area including pubs, places to eat and the local tourist attractions. They had left for us inside a welcome card, bottle of wine, home made cake, 6 eggs and a bottle of fresh milk. Acorn cottage had every thing we needed during our week stay there, is very clean and homely, lovely private garden to sit out in soaking up the sun. We would highly recommend this cottage for a stay in the Peak district, as it is ideally situated to use as a base for exploring this beautiful area of England."
"Service was great, little extras were most welcome. well decorated and had eveything you needed peaceful location and near lots of places to visit local pubs handy for meals and drinks would recommend and use cottage again our dog liked it as well"

"From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel very welcome at acorn cottage by the owners. The log burner was on, mince pies were in the oven. The cottage itself was beautiful. It was very clean and there was good information as regards to the local area. It was only 15mins drive into the centre of Matlock so was well placed in the peak district. Children were able to help on the farm which they enjoyed. We are already booked to go back again!"
"We had a really good time in acorn Cottage, the cottage was perfect, we could have stayed there forever. The owners were very friendly and helpful but were not hanging around all the time. There was information in the cottage about things to do in the area which was really helpful. The cottage was set in a lovely place, with nice walks straight outside the door. We couldnt have asked for a nicer place to spend our holiday, I would definately go back again in the future and would advise anyone who wants a lovely comfortable cottage with lots of things to do in the area to choose acorn cottage."
"We stayed at this cottage in October half term after doing a lot of research online. We were not dissapointed, it was a lovely cottage in a lovely area and only 5 minutes into Matlock. The cottage had everything you could need and was very warm and comfortable. The owners were very accomodating and put in a lot of effort into making you welcome. They took the children to feed and collect eggs from the animals on their small holding (pigs and chickens). The children though it was great :-) Brilliant holiday, Would recommend."
"I spent a few days with my children and dog at acorn Cottage in the summer. The owners were very welcoming on arrival and we loved all the personal touches - flowers, wine, fresh eggs and honey. The cottage itself was perfect. Spotlessly clean, very well equipped and beautifully appointed. We particularly liked having our own little enclosed garden for the dog who was also spoilt with her own bed and dog treats on arrival. I would highly recommend the cottage."
"We were the first to stay at this lovely cottage. It is beautifully decorated, clean and the owners Jo & Veronica have thought of everything you could need. They even provided a dog bed, sacks, treats and towels for our dog ! Our daughter had a wonderful time helping with the farm animals. There is lots to see and do nearby as the cottage is situated in a great location. We will definately return."
