Hailed as the Gateway to Snowdonia, Betws-Y-Coed is now the principal village of the Snowdonia National Park. Much of Betws-Y-Coed was built in Victorian times on the site where the River Conwy joins its three tributaries. Its natural beauty has inspired artists since those times and many continue to visit to try and capture something of the stunning scenery. Thick woodlands and imposing mountains dominate the skyline, offering an unspoilt habitat to a variety of animals, birds and some rare species of plants. With Mount Snowdon looming as a backdrop, Betws-Y-Coed attracts walkers, climbers and mountain-bikers throughout the year. As a result, the town is well served by inns and pups where you can sample local delights such as traditional Welsh rarebit and Glamorgan sausages. Also of interest are the many bridges in the area. Pont-y-Pair, built in 1468, is buffeted by foaming water after heavy rain, hence the meaning of its name: the Bridge of the Cauldron. A number of sign-posted walks in the surrounding countryside start near this bridge. A mile or so away is the Miner's Bridge, on the road to Capel Curig, where early miners crossed the river on a steep ladder to get to work.
Reviews
"The cottage was well placed for Snowdonia attractions. We spent a lot of time particularly in the late afternoon at Betws-y-Coed which is just down the road and also explored the national park. The roads leading to the cottage are extermely narrow for the last mile or so, but we only encountered a few cars as the roads were very quiet, and after doing this once I had my husband driving as I found it too stressful! The cottage itself was small and basic, but had everything we needed for a short break as a family with 2 children and we all enjoyed our stay. There were several helpful books, guides and toys for the children which were all nice touches. I would have liked towels to be provided instead of taking our own but this is a minor point. The location is very quiet - for our preferences and for the entertainment of our children at the moment, I would probably stay more in the hustle and bustle of Betws-y-Coed if we holidayed in the region again. But for those who prefer a more secluded and quiet location which is still very close to all the attractions, it would be perfect."
"We stayed over the Christmas period and it was amazing. Such a warm welcome from the owners, they greeted us as we arrived, and in the cottage had welcomed us with homemade Welsh cakes and mince pies (which were lovely) and a few other bits. The cottage is in a beautiful area with stunning views. The cottage itself was warm and cosy, very clean and comfortable. It has pretty much everything you need. Would definitely recommend this cottage, a 15min drive to Llanrwst, 10min drive to Betws y Coed, and 30mins to Llandudno. So for us a great location. Would definitely book again. Thank you!"
"Very comfortable, beautifully furnished cottage with kitchen full of useful extras. Owners are wonderful! Provided home baked Welsh cakes and home grown cucumbers! Will definitely visit again."
"Have just returned from a long weekend staying in the Arfron cottage. We were two adults and an 11 year old. The cottage was an excellent size for us. Everything you could want is there. We are familiar with the local area as keen walkers. So knew where to go etc. But this is an ideal base for touring Snowdonia and Anglesey. The cottage was extremely clean and comfortable. Nice and warm with the central heating. Lots of storage for clothes etc. The setting of the 3 cottages is wonderful and only 10 minutes from Betws-Y-Coed. The owners, Kathy and John are nearby if you need anything. Lovely Welsh cakes on arrival! Our stay was too short and have just booked to go again, so highly recommended."
"Stayed at The Arfron from 31st Aug-6th Sept, all previous reviews are true, this is a wonderful place to stay. Kathy & John are fantastic hosts welcoming on the Saturday & saying goodbye on the Thursday evening. We had the best weather you could expect for September, sunny & warm most days. The cottage is spacious for 2, might be a little cramped for 4 adults, 1 bedroom as bunk beds. There is plenty of storage space though & the kitchen is the best equipped we have stayed in. The lane leading to the cottage can be a bit daunting to some but its less than 1/2 mile long, the bonus being not much traffic takes this road so walking the dog is a treat, the views from the lanes are a treat. Excellent base for touring Snowdonia, most places can be reached within the hour, Betws-y-Coed, Capel Curig,Llangollen,Llandudno & many others. The Ponty Pair hotel in Betws-y-Coed does good beer & pub grub as does the Swallow Falls hotel. Will definitely be returning soon."
"We were made most welcome and helped when we needed it.The surrounding area had plenty of places to explore or peaceful enough just to chill out.Lots of walks close by and central enough for beaches, rail trips and Snowdonia. We had a great holiday up in the mountains."
"What a lovely cottage in a great location, definately recommend a visit and thanks to Mr & Mrs Bradley, by the way your welsh cakes were delicious."
"Lovely location in wonderful countryside, with beautiful views. Very comfortable cottage, well located for exploring. Owners helpful - made sure all was OK but not intrusive. Good walks from the door."
"very warm, cosy, lovely location, so serene, great landlords. my son enjoyed the sheep and horses they had,"
"A wonderfully relaxing week spent in a beautiful part of the world. Cottage was perfect, spotlessly clean with everything we needed, situated in a lovely location with beautiful views. Secluded, but still handy for the local village pub and Betws Y Coed with it's amenities and well marked walks etc. Owners very friendly and the Welsh cakes provided were the best I've tasted. Will definitely return."
"Fantastic cottage ,clean and with every thing you need set in beautiful countryside.Tranquil and peaceful yet only a short drive to Betws-y-coed and in easy reach of Mt Snowdon.Loved everything about our stay there and did not want to come home."
