This part of Northumberland is famous for its unspoilt beauty, and is widely recognised as having some of the most picturesque countryside in the whole of England. The area offers a wonderful combination of coastline and countryside, having long sandy beaches and the Cheviot Hills complementing each other perfectly. There are also a great number of well-preserved and spectacular medieval castles and stately homes in the area, including the fantastic Alnwick Castle, home to the Duke of Northumberland and often referred to as "The Windsor of the North". Alnwick itself was once a prosperous medieval market town, being only a day's ride from Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north and Newcastle upon Tyne in the south. It is still a charming maze of cobbled streets and narrow alleys, whilst its fine stone buildings now house a range of specialist shops and family-run businesses. Visitors can still enjoy the atmosphere of Alnwick as it may have been in Medieval times in the town's recently refurbished Market Place, which is also the centre for local events, including Alnwick Fair and the International Music Festival.
Reviews
"Thank you for a perfect week, Cosy Nook Cottage is so lovely. We enjoyed every minute of our stay in this beautiful cottage. Warm, cosy, spacious and very well equipped. Great location for so many places too. We really didn't want to come home and will definitely book to stay again. The beds were so comfy and the showers hot and powerful. We enjoyed cosy evening by the lovely open fire and family meals around the kitchen table. We've stayed in plenty of holiday cottages over the years, in many places but this one is my families favourite one. Thank you again."
"Family break to Alnwick . Property at the top of a fairly steep hill. On street parking not necessarily at the door but we had 2 cars and always managed to get parked, House has a very homely feel and lives up to its name of being Cosy . Decor in keeping with the property. Kitchen is well equipped and although compact it has the feel of a family kitchen and opens onto the small patio area . Instruction manuals for all appliances kept in folder in kitchen. Rooms on middle floor spacious. I would advise travellers that access to upper rooms not suitable for elderly adults or people with mobility issues. There were board games and Dvds available in the living room. Great visits to the Castle, Gardens, and Bamburgh beach. Found the Black Swan great for food and service."
"Cosy Nook is one of the very few holiday rentals which has been left with its original character in furnishing and arrangements. The furniture is attractive, comfortable and of an appropriate character for the age of the house, and the kitchen is lavishly provided with equipment, even down to high quality champagne flutes and different glasses for red and white wine. The rooms are of very generous size, and the main bedroom is tastefully furnished and decorated in matching styles. The only thing missing in the kitchen is bizarrely that there are no casseroles for the microwave. The house is about ten minutes maximum from the centre of the lovely little town of Alnwick. We will certainly return."
"The house is quite spacious and quirky but the place lacks care. Good things were the location and the bedding was clean and one of the showers was quite decent, but apart from that: No information to welcome us or tell us where to put rubbish or work facilities. The heating system is EXTREMELY noisy and needs attention. Tried to contact the owner on the phone numbers but she never returned the calls. Badly needs repair and better utensils and the couple at the top of the road where we pulled up to offload have us a mouthful for parking outside their house ( the only space available on a very narrow street) will not be staying again. "
"Great location for exploring Northumberland, very roomy house, pleasantly furnished, however kitchen in need of an update, especially the White goods"
"We chose Cosy nook for its room size and convenient access to Alnwick. The house was clean and the bedrooms were spacious as well as having 2 bathrooms and 1 downstairs toilet. However the top floor shower room was very cramped. The main problem we had was with the kitchen. It was a house for 7 people but the cooking for that number in the kitchen was difficult and at times unsafe. The handle on the oven was missing (since 2011 according to guest book) and the hob area vanished under a hearth so dark and cramped. The fridge had a door shelf missing and a broken freezer compartment. There was no plug for the sink and the area around was not enough to drain or stack washing up. There were no instructions on arrival. The boiler was off and so it was some time before we could get hot water. The boiler also made awful noises in the night and the radiators came on at 1a.m. There was rubbish from previos residents and none was collected while we were there. We did not find it a relaxing self catering base."
"Lovely house, great value near centre of alnwick. Plenty of space, bedrooms and bathroom all excellent. Only criticism of house would be that some new utensils and pans are needed in the kitchen. Otherwise, a really good place to take my children."
"We have stayed at Cosy Nook for the past two years and found the cottage perfectly adequate as a base for exploring the beautiful Northumberland countryside as well as easy access to Scotland. Most things we needed were provided and the beds on the first floor were comfortable which makes all the difference when staying away from home. We would heartily recommend this cottage unless you are over critical or want 5 star accommodation."
"We had doubts about returning to Alnwick having had such a good time the first time. Cosy Nook and Northumberland soon laid those concerns to rest. The house is a characterful, warm and quiet property which we thoroughly enjoyed. Alnwick has plenty to do, with a number of indivdual small shops, a welcome change from the 'clone towns'. Northumberland has such variety from moors to beautiful coasts, the people were very friendly, and importantly for us, the food was local and excellent. We shall return!"
