The delightful, unspoiled village of Newton upon Rawcliffe is a picture-postcard village with stone cottages and farms clustered around the village green and duck pond, situated on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. The area has varied countryside and offers fantastic walking opportunities. Nearby Pickering is only four miles away and this historic market town is home to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, England's longest steam railway. Near the centre of Pickering is Beck Isle Museum; a centre of bygone rural crafts and the customs of the local area. The magnificent abbeys of Byland and Rievaulx are close by as is the historic walled city of York and the stately home of Castle Howard. With its many activities and attractions, this is a fabulous area for a family holiday.
Reviews
"A real home from home. Very comfortable cottage in a great location. Very quiet and peaceful but close to many fun, family friendly activities. We enjoyed Whitby, Helmsley, Pickering, Rievaulx, Flamingo Land and eating in The White Swan. Would thoroughly recommend a stay here. "
"The accommodation had everything we needed, including very comfortable beds, the only slight downside being the rather dated bathroom. The couple who were looking after the cottage were friendly and helpful and the location was excellent with lots to do and see in the area. Pickering itself is the start of the North Yorks Moors light railway and the coastal towns of Scarborough and Filey are only an hour's drive away."
"Gateside is very well equipped and comfortable. It benefits from a recently refitted kitchen which has been done to a very high standard. The 'upside down' accommodation was unusual but made the most of the views available. Great base for the moors with good links to Pickering and surrounding area."
"Lovely and clean with everything you need to have as a base. Quiet location. Easy to get to all the places we wanted to visit, eg Whitby by steam train from Pickering, local museum in Pickering is worth a day's visit, local farmers' show was excellent. Base allowed us to relax on return from day out, plenty to do - well Yorkshire is God's own county!"
