Situated in the south-west rim of the Yorkshire Dales National Park is the bustling market town of Settle. Nestled beside the largest outcrop of limestone in Britain - a region of scars, cliffs, caves and potholes - this pretty little town is set against a backdrop of some of the most picturesque scenery in North Yorkshire. Every Tuesday, the town's market place is filled with stalls offering a wide variety of crafts and goods whilst throughout the rest of the week the local businesses surrounding the market place thrive. There is a good selection of restaurants and pubs and the town also boasts an excellent public swimming pool. Three days a week, the Victoria Hall is transformed into a cinema, providing visitors with all the activities of a larger town. The famous Settle-Carlisle Railway is also a huge draw and runs regular trips across some of the most beautiful and inspiring upland scenery in the country.
Reviews
"We have stayed in a lot of holiday cottages and many have been excellent. Gilchrist House, however was perfect for a February getaway. All the bedrooms are spacious and comfortable with lovely bedding. We used the front bedroom on the first floor and loved waking up to the view across the river to Giggleswick. The real fire was a treat on a cold, wet, windy night as we suggled up on the sofas in the living room, and then in the morning we enjoyed birdwatching from the bay window. We had the hous t ourselves as a couple, but the house sleeps up to 7 and would be big enough for two families. The kitchen has everything you need, although with plenty of places to eat such good food it's a good job that there is plenty of great walking fro the door. We wouldn't hesitate to go back."
"Excellent location, facilities and equipment for 7 of us who stayed. The basement games room was a bonus for my 9year old grandson. Local cafes , take a ways and swimming pool were all excellent. The location is ideal for the three peaks, settle to Carlisle railway ( though at moment due to land slip it is best to have a return ticket to Appleby) and local walks. Particularly good value for post half term."
"Excellent accommodation, spacious and comfortable with everything we needed. Great location for walks. Look forward to paying another visit. (Wifi signal was a bit weak at times but we managed)"
"My sister rented this cottage on line for the family. She, my brother, and myself were travelling to Settle to return my father's ashes to the family plot. We took the cottage for a week so we could use it as a base to visit relatives. It was Amazing! Very well appointed with all the mod cons, and immaculate. Very comfortable and the view from the front to the River Ribble is beautiful. There is even a games room in the basement! The parking is a bit tricky to find since it is across the lane from the back gate of the cottage and accessed from the main road, but otherwise this was an almost perfect choice for us. Even more so when my Aunt Dorothy found an old class photograph from Giggleswick School dated 1959. In it she found her late husband, Peter and his younger brother Rodney sitting front and centre! Wow."
"Went here for a week with friends. The cottage is dog friendly and there are lots of lovely dog walks nearby. It is just a short walk to Settle where there is a good choice of pubs and restaurants, some of which welcome dogs. The cottage has been very tastefully decorated and is extremely comfortable."
"My family (2 adults & 3 children 6 & under) stayed here for a week in the Easter holidays and it was just lovely. The house is stunning, incredibly comfortable and well equipped. We were lucky enough to have fantastic weather, but if you were stuck indoors or just wanted some quiet time there are many (many!) games, several dvds & books and also a pool table & dart board to keep you occupied! The house is in easy strolling distance from Settle centre which is a lovely town in itself but also the gateway by car or even better by train to some of the most beautiful parts of the country. Plenty to do for everyone. Such a lovely place to stay for our holiday, we would love to return."
"Gilchrist House is a beautiful warm and cosy home. The house is freshly decorated with some delightful finishing touches. The kitchen was well equipped with a large fridge freezer, dishwasher and washing machine. The pool table and dart board in the cellar was a real hit with the children and kept them entertained all week. Gilchrist House and Settle was a really great find and we will definitely be going back."
"This cottage was really well equipped, warm and comfortable with a little touch of luxury. The children loved the games room. The owners where really friendly, nothing too much trouble. Settle is a lovely base for walking and seeing many of the local sites. There are a variety of places to eat and drink, catering for all tastes."
"Warm, comfortable and beautifully decorated; we feel lucky to have found this place. Its one to remember and return to. It really has been a lovely stay from the comfy beds to the quality furnishings and sumptuous bath."
