Set on the banks of the River Stour is the small market town of Sturminster Newton, reached via a six arch 15th Century bridge that carries a warning of deportation for those who damage it. This beautiful region is apparently where the author Thomas Hardy drew much of his inspiration and it is said that he wrote 'Return of The Native' whilst living in the town. The surrounding area is packed with thatched cottages, numerous rural walks, stunning views of the countryside, and fascinating towns such as Sherborne with its abbey and castle. The beautiful Dorset Heritage coastline is also within easy reach and not only offers great water sport opportunities but also great bird watching, making this an ideal base all year round!
Reviews
"The Stables is a well equipped and spacious self contained property. The owners farmhouse is close at hand, but completely separate. This region is a delight for anyone who likes quiet and natural rural England. There are many delightful small towns and villages within easy reach and some excellent pubs serving really good food. The Dorset coast is not far away and is easily reached. The local lanes are quite narrow but are generally quiet and represent no drawback - they are part of the attraction for us! The house itself was very comfortable and the owners were very helpful and pleasant and respected our privacy perfectly."
"Arrived to find cupcakes, tea bags, milk and sugar waiting for us! The cottage, gardens, views are fabulous and the surrounding area is so peaceful and quiet."
"We were warmly welcomed by the owner. the property was home from home and had been decorated with a lovely Christmas tree. Comfortable size for 4 adults and we had a dog with us. The garden attached to the stables was dog/child friendly. We found a local pub The Green Man very friendly and the food was tasty. The landlord was helpful with giving us space to accommodate a toddler and dog, which allowed us to have an enjoyable time there. The stables is quite isolated if you wanted to do any shopping, having said that found a supermarket in Sturminster Newton offering a good range of products. Enjoyable, peaceful location."
"Location is great - overlooking lovely countryside. The cottage was larger than we expected and had everything we needed. Star gazing with clear skies at night was a big bonus as there is no light pollution, and the area is so quiet; we really enjoyed our stay. The hosts are very approachable and made our stay perfect. We enjoyed an evening at The Exchange in Stur which stages varied events and has a really friendly atmosphere."
"Probably the best cottage we've stayed in, comfortable for a family of 4. Great garden and a great place to explore the county of Dorset. Owners were polite and welcoming and stopped for a chat when they saw you!!"
