The spa village of Strathpeffer grew up in the 18th Century and in 1819 the water was declared to be the healthiest in Britain. Having been restored to its former glory, the Spa Pavilion is used for various events throughout the year including concerts and exhibitions. There is a museum of childhood and working craft shops all housed in a former Victorian railway station. The pump house offers visitors a chance to ‘take the waters' and is also home to a Tourist Information point. There are forest walks to be enjoyed and a walk to the Pictish Hill Fort at the top of Knock Farril, also known as Knock Farrel, will be well rewarded with panoramic views. Strathpeffer is a fascinating base for a great holiday.
Reviews
"If you want to get away from it all, relax in peace, far from the madding crowd, then this is the place to be. We have been coming for a few years now, always loved it, but have been reluctant to leave a review and let others in in this secret haven. It is isolated, far from shops, restaurants etc but if you are a keen photographer as we are the views are sublime, the wildlife plentiful and the deer graze in the lawn by moonlight! It is perfectly placed to tour the highlands, a car is essential, public transport is not an option. It's sixty miles to the Isle of Skye, 40 to Spey-side and the Cairngorms, twenty five to Strathfarrar , another best kept secret. The Mackenzie family are wonderful hosts, keep the cottage spotless and are mines of useful information. Don't bother looking in Secret Escapes website, this will do perfectly, perhaps more for adults than children."
"Fantastic quiet bungalow in a beautiful area, loved the birds singing and the peaceful loch. Would revisit if possible sometime soon."
"Everything required for a very nice holiday stay and in tthe ideal location for a restful time"
"Lovely spacious cottage in peaceful surroundings. A perfect holiday let for watching wildlife - saw deer, red kite and many birds. Good location with plenty to see and do nearby. Rogie Falls are almost on your doorstep and are well worth a visit. Would recommend."
"We could not fault; beautifully kept; occassionally there was a very small boat with fisherman on the loch, otherwise totally private, yet the owners lived behind and out of sight, so if we needed any help they were there and we had the security of access so nobody could bother us. We found this an excellent location for visits; we could shop in Inverness and visit John O'Groats and the Castle of Mey. We were blessed with good weather and had no problem with mosquitoes!"
"After seeing the cottage on Sykes website, we immediately booked it,the service and information received was excellent, the descriptions,'photos and directions were first class. On arrival at the cottage,we were greeted by Gillian and Ali,we were made so welcome, also they had put tea, milk, bottled water, shortbread and a bottle of wine in the cottage, which we thought was a lovely touch, and so welcoming. Gillian and Ali were the perfect hosts, offering advice on the area, restaurants and local activities, but were never intrusive, just there if needed. The cottage was in an idyllic setting,so quiet and peaceful, overlooking the loch, with just the birds and wildlife for company! we even saw deer and Red Kites, which was superb a haven for nature lovers. The cottage was well equipped and spotlessly clean,It really is a hidden gem and we would certainly recommend a stay there to anyone."
"As soon as I stepped out of my car I wanted to start taking photographs of the lovely scenery. Not another person in site apart from a few anglers in their boats on the loch. The bungalow was perfect with adequate facilities. When the outside temperature dropped the interior stayed warm & cosy. The owners were close by if needed & were most welcoming & helpful. The loction is ideal for touring both the east & west coasts, with excellent roads & very little traffic it was a pleasure to drive. Thing we liked least of all was having to leave."
