The ancient village of Durness – the most northerly on mainland Scotland – remains largely unspoilt and offers a truly peaceful location amidst wild, awe inspiring landscapes. Steeped in history, the village houses evidence of an eighth century Christian settlement as well as the Viking invasions and various early cave dwellings. The surrounding rugged coastline is a mixture of imposing cliffs and sweeping sandy beaches and makes a fantastic place for birdwatchers to spy some rarer species. Within easy reach of the Highlands and Britain's most Northerly golf course, the region also offers visitors the chance to see a large colony of puffins at nearby Faraid Head. Situated on the site of an old RAF base, the local craft village offers a vide selection of local artwork and produce.
Reviews
"Had a lovely time up in Durness. The house was comfortable and warm with a multifuel stove in the kitchen and an open fire in the sitting room. The local shop delivers coal and it was waiting for us when we arrived so we were cosy from the first night. Plenty of nice walks and stunning beaches in the area and Smoo Cave is well worth a visit. The drive down to Ullapool is lovely as well . Would stay again."
"Booked through Sykes cottages. Pick up of keys seamless. House chilly as all older properties can be but heaters and coal fires available. Would prefer heating to be included and wished this projected cost was added to rental agreement however trivial complaint. Property was exceptionally well stocked with the exception of towels for some reason. There were a range of kitchen utensils that I had no idea what they were for and am looking them up on google! The property was well located with lots to explore in the area. If you are travelling with smaller children take some games as the ones in house are past their best with too much missing to be useful. The view from the kitchen was great and I liked the kitchen best as roomy."
"the cottage was lovely and very comfortable. The kitchen was the best room in the house due to the beautiful view out of the windows. Everything is within walking distance. Durness is stuning we were blessed with lovely weather despite going in febuary."
"Booking through Sykes Cottages was smooth and simple. The caretaker was friendly, helpful but not intrusive (we only saw her twice and that was at our request). The cottage was very clean, comfortable and perfectly situated. We especially liked the open fire in the lounge and the wood burner in the kitchen. The purpose of our holiday was to try to get some pictures of the Northern Lights and we were blessed with amazing displays on two nights. We needed a location that was isolated but not too remote as my wife is disabled. Durness has everything we needed, a local, well stocked shop and quiet, friendly pubs and cafes. Oh, and don't miss the chocolate factory less than half a mile up the road. The only downside was that everything was very expensive. I had heard that the Scottish national pastime was overcharging and it was certainly true. Having said that, they did it with a smile. I wouldn't hesitate to go again and in fact, we are planning to do just that. Thank you."
"We had a lovely time at Transvaal House. Great walks close to the house. The stove in the kitchen was great very warm."
"Transvaal house was excellent accomodation for us and our children, it was extremely comfortable, spotlessly clean and had everything you could possibly need and more. The location was amazing and there was so much to do in the immediate vicinity we didin't drive anymore than 3 miles away through the whole holiday."
"A lovely cottage suitable for a large family who aren't bothered about fancy modern matching furniture and fittings, but just want a comfortable cottage to feel at home in. Lovely log burner. Amazingly well equiped kitchen and superb location."
