Situated on a bend at the banks of the looping River Coquet, the picturesque village of Warkworth is dominated by the ruins of its twelfth century castle. A great location from which to enjoy Northumberland's Heritage Coast, this wonderful village is full of historical intrigue as the ancestral home to the Percy family - Henry Percy being the lover of a young Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII's second wife. Another Percy residence can be seen nearby in the form of Alnwick Castle, most famous now for its part as Hogwarts School in the Harry Potter films. Full of Georgian and early Victorian houses, Alnwick boasts a host of architecturally interesting buildings and is home to an exceptional range of galleries, antique shops, a village shop-cum-post office, pubs, restaurants and gift shops.
Reviews
"After our recent visit to The Annexe, my husband and I were left feeling very disappointed for numerous reasons. Although in the photographs the building and its surroundings look very well presented, we found this was not the case at all. There were lots of failed window units, causing condensation and consequently limiting our view. The grass at the front had not been cut and was probably about 8-12 inches long. To say it was a 'pet friendly' rental, there were numerous gaps around the hedging and the gate was propped open with a brick. We discovered there was an air lock in the hot water system which created very loud banging noises, causing distress to the dog - not very pet friendly! We didn't feel there was enough bedding, there was only one pillow per person and the spare pillows were stained. The oven was filthy dirty which caused the smoke alarm to go off. We found the stairs to be rather dangerous, wooden stairs which were very slippery. Lastly, we were disappointed with the 'shower'. It wasn't attached to the wall, only a shower which comes from the bath taps - as an elderly couple we found this very difficult to shower. Overall we were very disappointed with the cottage as a whole, which could have had so much potential."
"Although classed as high quality, I was disappointed with The Annexe for various reasons. The oven was filthy, the fridge door was broken, the mugs were all dirty & had to be washed before we could use them. The smoke alarm just outside the kitchen door was so sensitive, if I boiled the kettle it went off. I had to keep the kitchen door shut & dash in & out! The toilet roll holder in the bathroom was broken & had to be held whilst taking off paper to prevent it coming off the wall! The inside of The Annexe looked tired & in need of a bit of TLC! This opinion was not just mine but the previous occupant who had left a note! Obviously no one had read the note! The location of The Annexe is brilliant but I will not be staying there again. I sent an email to the owners...surprisingly, no reply!"
"The accommodation was better than anticipated and the location was perfect for getting to local attractions yet set in aquiet and safe location. i truly enjoyed the stay and would recommend to friends and family."
"very clean cottage with all the comforts of home and alison was most helpfull"
"The Annexe at Eastfield Hall is a delight, but not without its drawbacks- at first we wondered whether we had made a mistake as, having left two or three messages on theowners ( two)n mobile phone numbers provided by the booking agency, which appeared to be ignored, we eventually managed to contact the owners after a few days. However they were extremely polite if a little vague about the cottage's faciliites - (eg not sure if there was a shaver point in the bathroom!) This is 2 bedroom stone built cottage with walls a foot thick, so the night store heating keeps it toasty warm. So warm in fact that we had to turn the bedroom heater off! First impressions are a spacious lounge with a couple of comfy sofas and chair, tv/dvd player, cd player etc. Lots of books, fiction and otherwise, and useful information/maps about the area and even a chess set! Childrens games are also available so all ages are catered for. The carpets throughout the cottage looked a little tired but I suppose as this property accepts animals, this is to be expected. However the rest of the place was spotless. The conservatory doubles as a dining area easily seating four people and on a cold October morning, we found that by opening the lounge door and turning on the electric heater whilst preparing breakfast, it soon became a bearable temperature. The Kitchen is also spacious and well equipped - cooker, fridger (small freezer compartment only), microwave, espresso/filter coffee maker, loads of crockery and utensils - only thing missing (according to the visitor book) which some people would miss is a washing machine but this isnt really necessary for a short break - there is also a launderette in nearby Amble if needed. The bedrooms were accessed by wooden stairs - beware if wearing socks instead of slippers these can be extremely slippery. One double and one twinroom - both a good size although the double bed was not the most comfortable and extremely squeaky - could be embarrassing but had a beautiful snuggley duvet! A reasonable amount of storage space in drawers and cupboards and hanging space in some wardrobes made out of cloth. Bathroom - again spacious, lots of hot water but comments continually in the visitors book seem to go unheeded. Wonky loo seat and no shower were the ongoing theme - we couldn't understand this as both are easily fixed - even a rubber push on mixer/shower head would solve this, but at least a jug was provided for hair washing; My only reservations about this cottage were - lots of light bulbs not working - particularly dangerous one over the stairs. We managed to find a couple and change them but not all. Also slightly annoying was the haphazard way things seemed to be stored. In the bathroom the bathroom cabinet held kiddies bathtime toys and old/empty hand soap dispensers so we had to leave all out stuff out on the top, not able to put it away. We found an iron the bedside cabinet upstairs(?) but the hairdryer downstairs in a lounge drawer unit. Instruction booklets, instead of being stored in one place altogether (I was looking for the expresso machine instructions) were found in various places around the kitchen/lounge. Also bits and pieced thrown into drawer units that you may need - it was all a bit hit and miss. An ongoing theme in the visitor book was the situation with the bins - generaly not being put out when they should have been, and a bit more info as to what goes into which bin (there were two to choose from, we have three in our county!) might have helped. The cottage was a bit of a way from the main town and not, in our opinion, a particularly safe walk at night as it was about 2 dark miles but you could see the sea from the bedroom window (just) and conservatory. Garden was tidy and a free standing dryer for washing was available which would be used in or out. All in all we enjoyed out stay here, and it was lovely to come back in the evenings after a busy day out - there is LOTS to do within a 2mile/easy drive radius - to this warm, cosy, comfortable nest. A box of local toffees left for our enjoyment was appreciated. The town of Warkworth has a little village shop which was good for the basics (milk, bread and wine!) and there are several good eateries in the town. We would recommend the Masons Arms which did a very good steak night and also take away fish and chips which were scrummy We would definitely come back to this part of the world again, and we wouldn't rule out staying at the Annexe, thank you owners."
"Pleasantly furnished and convenient cottage but cluttered with objects which may be useful to a family but were not for us - including what we assumed was food left over by previous tenants eg tins, coffee, tea etc. Breakfasting in the conservatory was enjoyable but to repeat myself, we felt rather "om show". There was no shower which was a bit of a loss but, to be fair, none was shown on the advertisement. We knew the area and found the cottage very convenient to the attractions of the coast and Morpeth (a town we particularly like)."
"Lovely property and location with the sea over the fields and town in the distance. All the things you could need in a holiday home and more. The property needed a good hoover when we arrived so we telephoned and this was done while we were out. It wasn't spotless but it was better. The conservatory was also not used by us as it seemed a bit damp. However the positives definitely outweighed the negatives. If you have kids plenty of toys and a great big garden to kick a ball around in too. Loads of books and brochures when we got there including walks. Neighbours nearby but we didn't really see or hear anybody."
