Situated at the entrance to Swaledale, the ancient market town of Richmond boasts cobbled streets and narrow alleys -or 'wynds' - that have evolved over nine centuries. The town itself grew up around the local castle; a Norman fortress dating back to 1071 that is situated high above the river. Even the name 'Richmond' can be traced to the fortification, as 'Riche-mont' literally means 'strong hill'. Within the town narrow streets and alleys radiate from the cobbled Market Place which is still home a weekly market and monthly farmer's market whilst throughout the rest of the week visitors can enjoy numerous shops, pubs and restaurants.
Reviews
"We stayed here for five night in may 2019 as reccomended to us by some friends. We were impressed with the cottage small but had a great friendly atmosphere to it. The owenrs were lovely and made us feel at home the little town near it was also great to explore. A great memorable holiday!"
"Location on the edge of Richmond, 10 mins walk to Market Place is great. Set well back from the A road so no traffic noise. HOWEVER: cottage is a terraced conversion of four with poor sound insulation from adjacent cottages, so pot luck if you have noisy, or smelly smokers (ignoring posted signs), yappy-dog owning neighbours immediately adjacent, as we did. Space is adequate for a holiday cottage, and quality of fixtures, fittings, and equipment is top notch - e.g. Denby crockery. Bedrooms are also well equipped and beds are very comfortable, much better than most rentals. However there are some surprising omissions, e.g. no towels provided (yes, really!), no plate covers/pyrex/tupperware or similar vessels for the microwave, and an absolutely minimal quantity of kitchen utensils for a week's self catering. We have taken 8 to 10 cottage holidays a year for the last 20 years all over Europe. This is the first one ever that we have left early (one day due to neighbouring renters mentioned above). We're not likely to book again."
"Fabulous cottage, very clean. Owners very friendly. A quiet place, so if you want to relax its ideal. Also a great base for walkers. I would highly recommend these cottages."
"This cottage is situated within easy walking distance of the town centre and there is ample parking space to leave your car. The cottage is quite small but is very clean and well furnished and equipped. The only thing we would have liked which was not provided was a hairdryer. There were books and games for entertainment and a few DVDs. We didn't take any towels with us so had to go and buy some but tea towels and a bathmat were provided. Outside there was a garden table and chairs although the weather was not good enough for us to use them during our stay. I would definitely recommend this cottage."
"The cottage was fantastic. It was clean, and the owners had even left tea, coffee and milk, which I thought was a lovely touch. The photos are exactly as the cottage, not misleading in any way. It was quiet, which is what we were after and close enough to Richmond centre to have a little walk up. There was even a washer and dryer. The owners were fantastic when I rang up for details, so an all round brilliant service."
"Foxglove cottage was well equipped for a family of four. Spotlessly clean and nobody else's "leftovers" in the kitchen cupboards. Warm and cosy, small but spacious, Owner often around and about to sort things out (pipes froze due to extreme temperatures at xmas) Tastefully decorated with xmas tree etc. Lovely lights in the gardens"
