The mountain of Manod Mawr has a long history of slate mining and some of the underground chambers were used to house National Treasures during the 2nd World War. Manod village is located in a natural bowl between the Manod and Moelwyn mountains and is well served by a number of shops and pubs, which are used to serving travellers on their way to Betws-Y-Coed, the ‘Gateway to Snowdonia' and the village at the base of Mount Snowdon. Many of Manod's old slate quarries are now tourist attractions, giving fascinating insights into the work undertaken by slate miners in years gone by. The nearby Ffestioniog Railway takes passengers on stunning scenic routes through the North Wales countryside. There are many good walks and cycle-trails to be found in the area and Manod's location provides easy access to other attractions such as Portmeirion - the Italian-designed village used as the setting for the cult TV-show, ‘The Prisoner' – and the white-water rafting opportunities provided at Bala.
Reviews
"We have just returned from a half term holiday staying at Ty Mawr. There was a lovely warm welcome gift when we arrived at the beautifully furnished cottage. There was plenty of room for 2 adults, 2 children and our dog! The cottage is located at the southern end of Blaenau Ffestiniog. Parking is available off the main street at the back of the property. The cottage is about a mile away from the local Co-Op as well as all the Snowdonia attractions. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here, even though the weather wasn't great, we enjoyed coming back to the cottage, lighting the log burner for a cosy night in! Hopefully we will get the chance to visit again."
"This cottage exceeded our expectations! I cannot praise this property enough! The owner had put a lot of thought and detail into this cosy cottage. There was plenty of written information of local walks and attractions in the area. The garden is very secure should you wish to bring your four legged friends with you. The cottage was beautiful and clean with good decoration throughout. Everything was in the cottage we could have wanted, right down to pen and paper! The weather was glorious for the week we stayed there in July but i could imagine the cottage being really warm and cosy on chilly nights with the log burner. Snowdonia is well worth a visit as is the slate mines just up the road. The only downside we found was eating out in the close vacinity but this was not a real problem as we explored the area each day."
"We just spent a week in this cottage. It's beautiful with everything you need. Lovely little personal touches and the cottage is very rustic with wooden beams. This now has Wi-Fi which I understand didn't have previously which helped us plan our day trips. There is a local co-op which is about a miles walk away so we picked a few bits up from there on occasion or a Tesco in Porthmadog if you want to do a full shop. The only criticism I had is that when we arrived (in the rain) we were unable to park outside the cottage to unload. There is a parking space on the hill behind the cottage which was a bit tricky with a bigger car. The second day we came back from being out in the morning and there were 3 council trucks parked outside the cottage so we parked up the road. When one of the trucks moved, we moved our car and my partner got beeped and received a hand gesture from one of the local workman which was a little unwelcoming. "
"We were really impressed with the standard of the accommodation this cottage provided. Ideally located for exploring Snowdonia and beautiful North Wales, the cottage is in a village with plenty of local amenities and close bigger towns as well as the seaside. The cottage is extremely comfortable and equipped with everything you could need. It has been thoughtfully and carefully kitted out and the style suits the period details of the house. Great that it was pet friendly too. Highly recommended!"
"This is a delightful, well equipped cottage with views of the mountains. The cottage is in a good location to go out from and explore Snowdonia Natioal Park. Internet and mobile phone usage in the whole area is weak but this can be got around by visiting one of many pubs, restraunts or cafe,s in the area that have free WiFi and searching out the web pages for the places you want to visit and taking a screen photo which can thrn be used at any time. The Grapes pub at Meantrogm shuch a place which is a good place to go and has free WiFi"
