Lying in a sheltered corner of Upper Ryedale, this lovely settlement boasts a spacious market square surrounded by houses, hotels and shops as well as a 12th Century castle. English Heritage's Rievaulx Abbey is close by too and there is a multitude of excellent walks in the near vicinity, the most well known of these - the Cleveland Way – starting in the village itself. Reviews
"A perfect holiday home, clean, spacious and in a quiet part of the lovely village of Helmsley, yet only a 2 minute walk to the main part of the village with all the amenities to hand, shops pubs cafes etc. a really beautiful area and with in easy reach of other attractions."
"Beautiful house. Lovely garden Ideal location So warm and cosy Super memories of a fabulous week One word says it all!"
"Just got back from a lovely week in Helmsley at Castle View. The house was very homely with a lovely garden and just a short walk into beautiful helmsley with its great choice of independent shops and a great choice of pubs and restaurants.Everyone we met was very helpful and friendly, would highly recommend."
"This house is warm and welcoming in a snowy November, fully equipped with everything you could need for a family weekend away. The owners are friendly and efficient making the organising very easy. The location was great for us both walking distance into Helmsley and easy access to great dog walks. All we need now is to book again in the summer to make full use of the garden."
"We stayed as 2 families for New Year 2015. The house is spotless, beautifully presented spacious & everything you could need for a fab stay. There's everything you could ever need & more the children loved it as they could walk in to the village to the sweet shop! The firework display New Year's Eve was lovely. Amazing house with a lovely feel the minute you walk in. "
"We visited Helmsley as a group of two families, in all there were 9 of us and 2 dogs. The house was easily large enough to accommodate us without us getting under each others' feet. Every room is beautifully decorated, with four good sized bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and a lovely large kitchen, living room and conservatory. Plus a really nice, secluded garden and decking area, with private parking for one car. On arrival, it was clear that the house was spotlessly clean, and there was even a small welcome gift awaiting us. The owners provided logs for the fire, use of bicycles, ideas for things to do / see / eat, and really everything anyone could need for a great holiday on the edge of the North York moors. We spent most of our time walking, but also used Helmsley's outdoor pool, visited the castle, Rievaulx Abbey and Mount Grace Priory. We mostly ate in the house kitchen in the evening and then retired to the conservatory for a glass of wine. We did venture into the village for a wonderful meal at the Black Swan one evening - thoroughly recommended, but with prices to match the quality of the food! In all, a wonderful relaxing week in a beautiful part of the country. Thinking of returning, maybe for a winter break."
"This house is superb. Space, location, bedrooms, bathrooms plenty of all. Truly minutes away from market square and all the delights on offer. Lovely view of the castle from my bedroom. Thanks to the owners for !taking this place available. Oh and the sun is shining."
"this house had it all for my family lovely comfortable furnishings (the pillows are the best ever) and with parking for us all (one on the drive plenty of parking in the street) this house is close to the town centre and attractions, when we arrived the house was spotless with lots of small extra touches to make our stay even better, I think we spent most of our time in the house in the conservatory which was lovely in the mornings then late evening with the lights around the garden made this even more special. We are hoping to visit here again"
"Stayed for the week with husband, father, daughter, son in law and 2 of my grandchildren, to enable my father to attend the Palestine Reunion Parade at Eden Camp. Love!y cottage in an ideal location, warm and comfortable. Looking forward to staying again."
"This is a very nice cottage, in a fabulous location for the town. Except you can't see the castle so the name is a little misleading. It was plenty big enough for the 9 of us and there was lots of kitchen equipment, towels, bedding, games etc for everyone. The bedrooms are spacious and nicely presented. The whole cottage was impeccably clean. The bathrooms are modern and clean and there are enough for the number of people which was nice to not queue! Hot water was ok although went cool at times. Having wifi was good as phone signal is poor. The cottage was a little cold at times and it would have been good if we could have controlled the heating. However underfloor heating was a nice touch though, as is the real fire. Overall a very pleasant stay in a lovely area with nice walks and things to do around."
"First class accommodation with everything you could need on hand. The location being just a short walk to town centre was excellent. Entire family thoroughly enjoyed our week in Helmsley."
"Castle View is a very comfortable holiday cottage in the heart of the picturesque village of Yorkshire. The kitchen is narrow, which is a bit inconvenient if you occupy the house with 6 people or more, but in general the house is perfectly equipped and very well maintained. The area around Helmsley is gorgeous : Rievaulx abbey, the North York Moors, the Yorkshire Coast, the city of York are all nearby."
"We were five adults so only used three bedrooms hence there was plenty of room for all of us. Location is nice and quiet and VERY handy for the market square. Given that it was the middle of March and absolutely freezing outside we quickly worked out how to keep the majority of the house warm and cozy ... although never quite managed to get the master bedroom and en-suite with its three outside walls to a really comfortable temperature. Kitchen worked well for five with the table against the wall. However for 7+ people the table would need to be away from the wall and would then make moving around the kitchen difficult. Easily sleeps eight and could see it working well for two families sharing. There are beds for two more but place would be getting exceedingly crowded. Living room only seats 6 but there are more seats in the conservatory. Nice tidy garden and the bikes would have been used had the weather been better. There is a washing machine and tumble dryer, but we could not find a clothes horse for those items not suitable for the dryer - perhaps the one real thing missing. Lots of games and videos. Owner was very helpful. This place would be in the 5 star luxury bracket if it had WiFi."
"Beautiful, cosy property with everything you could possibly need from a holiday rental. Large, attractive rooms , decorated and furnished to a very high standard, with lots of extra, thoughtful touches such as Dvds and books downstairs and some lovely kids games and toys upstairs in one of the bedroom, very handy and a fantastic idea. The owner of this property was fantastic, very helpful and nothing seemed like too much trouble. We had a lovely relaxing break and will definitely return in the not too distant future."
"We were looking for somewhere to stay for our family for our son's wedding and so this was ideal. Four big bedrooms, including 1 large room for the boys with lots of toys and books, was perfect. The house had virtually everything you might need, which was particularly important when the weather was poor. The Conservatory also was a great space to chill out in. With the cottage adjacent to the Cleveland Way, it was great for walking with our border collie. Our daughter needed to see a doctor during the stay and the people at the local Surgery, only a few hunderd yards away, could not have been more friendly and helpful. Thoroughly recommended!"
"The cottage was hired so we could celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary with our family. The kitchen was brilliant with a large table which we could all congregate to eat and chat. The underfloor heating was brilliant as we were there in December. It was situated just behind the square which made it convenient for us to walk to the shops, pubs, and castle. The welcome pack and flowers were a lovely touch."
"Helmsley is a great base to stay. We loved the shops and nearby attractions of the walled gardens and Riveleau Terrace/Abbey. The Cottage is ideal for young families as the children's play room/bedroom has plenty of toys, supplied by the owner to keep them occupied. There is a short walk to a children's play area and next door to that is an open air pool. Helmsley may be a small town but there is plenty of things going on. Many thanks to the owners for providing such a lovely cottage. We hope to be back again next year."
"We visited castle view with family and our two young children. It was perfect for our needs, the childrens room was fantastic for them. The rest of the house felt very homely and was very well equipt. The location was perfect, Helmsley has all you need and there are so many fantastic attractions within that area. Will definately return"
"This beautiful house is even more spacious that the photographs suggest, and although we filled all the rooms we never felt on top of one another. It is prettily decorated, the bedrooms large and airy and the beds very comfortable, and three bathrooms , one with a large bath, meant no queues in the morning! Having a downstairs bedroom and shower was ideal for one elderly guest, all very accessible. Every detail has been thought of all throughout the house and the lovely kitchen is no exception - much better equipped than home! We sat 11 comfortably round the table. The conservatory is a great bonus, such a comfortable place to sit looking out over the lovely garden. The location is ideal, perfectly quiet yet only five minutes walk down a lane to the square in Helmsley and all its amenities. The house was spotlessly clean, and finding beds made up, bread, butter, milk etc waiting was a much appreciated thoughtful touch after a long journey. The large selection of toys in the cupboards and videos to watch on the upstairs or downstairs television would keep any child amused for any number of rainy days. Our only regret was not staying there longer. I couldn't recommend it more highly and would love to go back again one day."

"Our group was told by the friendly owners to treat the property like a home from home, but when we arrived the property is of a better standard than our homes! It is clean, very well equipped and the underfloor heating was a great bonus. There were books, games/toys and videos also for our use. When we arrived there was bread, butter, tea, milk and biscuits left for us, which was a very nice touch. Quiet and lovely but also a convenient location for local services. We really hope to visit again."
"great position in the village, very convenient for surrounding attractions, countryside, York, Scarborough etc. Slept 10 comfortably, plenty of spacekitchen adequate for number, warm and cosy"
"My wife & I wanted to take my retired parents and their dog(!) away for a relaxing long weekend. Castle View is ideally positioned 5 mins walk from the market town square of Helmsley - which offers a range of good shops & restaurants. The house is fully equipped for all needs, very welcoming style, very clean and well-maintained. Would certainly recommend for a similar stay."
"The house was brilliant, very clean and in good order. The kids loved the fridge and had never drank so much water. Coming from London could not believe how nice it tasted. Walking into the village and on longer walks was excellent, also the historic buildings captured our imaginations. The only down side was sitting in the living room, not enough seats, suggest they move the book case into the conservatory, freeing up space in the living room for 10!!"
"I booked this house for a family get together and it didn,t disappoint we had a great week. There was everything there you needed and Helmsley is a great base to stay."
"Within a couple of minutes walk of Helmsley Centre. The garden, although not overly large, certainly was big enough to accommodate an evening barbeque and was well equipped for this. The house was more than comfortable and well furnished and equipped. We we were all very happy with the property and had a lovely week in a beautiful part of the world."
