Set in a secluded position in the northern Lake District, the charming village of Penruddock is located between Keswick and Penrith, and is just four miles from Ullswater. This little town is spread across rolling countryside and is composed of many old farmsteads, traditional workmen's cottages and two churches. Penruddock can trace its history back to Celtic times, the name being derived from 'Pen', a Celtic word for 'hill' and 'rhuddawc' meaning red in Welsh and referring to the reddish brown colour of the soil found in the area. The popular town of Keswick is close by, boasting numerous shops and restaurants, as well as offering miniature golf, some good parks, the Century Theatre, a cinema and a beautiful lake. Penruddock itself offers easy access to the surrounding Cumbrian countryside and the southern Lakes, Solway Coast and Hadrian's Wall are all within easy driving distance.
Reviews
"Fantastic cosy cottage in a great location with stunning views and easy access to the Northern Lakes. We had a very comfortable stay for 10 nights. The cottage was clean and well equipped, even though the weather was cold and frosty most of our stay the multi fuel fire kept the whole cottage really warm 24/7 with either the supplied logs or coal. There were many walks directly from the door which pleased our dog and the dog friendly pub The Herdwick is only a short walk away with good food and a fine selection of ales. Will be back."
"I have tried to raise my concerns with Skyes cottges, but they have not responded, and I am unable to attach any photos to their email forms, so will do this here. This was a lovely cottage with great vies but spoiled by the mould on all the ceilings, signs of water damage on walls, and paper peeling off the walls from the damp. We were their in August and the only way to dry towels was to turn on the radiators and use these. My Younger son had a cold all week, not sure the damp helped with this, and those with babies or health problems may not do as well."
"Had a lovely stay in the cottage, it is hidden down a lane, we got lost trying to find it. Once there had no complaints, the view is fantastic, has everything you need in there. Board games and dvds for when the weather isnt great. Was close enough to activities locations if you drive. A pub just around the corner is fab, lovely food and very friendly. Farm shop/cafe is 3 miles away, take a walk down the lane to get there and you'll also come across another great place to eat and drink. We had a lot of rain whilst we were there so would recommend wellies if you are walking to the pub as the puddles can get very big."
"The cottage is located in a quiet secluded part of the village. Cooage was clean and homely. Kitchen was well equiped and I was able to cook without any hassle. We ate at the local Inns and I enjoyed The Sportsman's food and Jennings ale. We enjoyed the seclusion and quiet as we were ready for a rest, but amenities were close enough for nice days out exploring. The only thing I was disappointed with was the bathroom. It is in need of refurbishing. The log burner was a novelty, and we soon had the cottage snug and warm."
"Well appointed and comfortable cottage which was very well equipped (only grumble was a lack of good sharp knives) and well furnished. The weather during our stay was wild, cold and wet but we were toasty inside with a combination of electric heating, topped up by a solid fuel stove in the living room. We have rented many cottages over the years and reckon this was the best for location, views, comfort and warmth!"
"The location with the view was lovely. The accomodation was cosy, clean and warm. We were lucky with the weather so sitting out in the garden was a real bonus. Enjoyed the walks and the scenery and had a thoroughly great time."
"Lovely cottage, with a very nice view of the fells. All the equipment you needed was in the house. Very nice!"
"We have stayed here before and will be coming back every year. The cottage is situated in an ideal location and is central to all of the lakes and villages. Lots to do and see. Excellent facilities at the cottage, clean and well maintained. Its got everything you would need which makes it home from home but with better views and weather."
"lovely cottage short walk from pub that serves good food short drive to some very good walks"
"We collected the key as advised by the owners The cottage was lovely, settees a bit low as i have difficulty with mobility it meant driving to to shops and the local pub, thats what made our holiday less enjoyable, the views were spectacular but the cottage was a bit too remote for us.We would recommend it to fit able bodied friends and relations."
"The cottage was lovely and characterful, but with all mod cons, fantastic views at the front, beautiful cottage garden at the back, peaceful, wish we lived there! Ideal place for access to the Lakes and surrounding areas, also easy to reach Carlisle."
"The cottage is in a wonderfully peaceful spot, with lovely views across fields to Mell Fell. A nearby footpath crosses a couple of fields to the pub and bus stop in the centre of the village. Penruddock is about 4 miles from the southern end of Ullswater, but more driving is involved to reach the heart of the Lake District and the high fells. However, the lanes around Penruddock are quiet and peaceful, away from the crowds, and it is well located for less frequented walks. We made good use of the excellent bus service to Penrith and to Keswick and beyond, (free for us now we have reached 60!) The cottage is well equipped and furnished, with a new kitchen, including dishwasher, and large fridge-freezer. TV reception is limited, due to the location. Bedrooms smallish, but very comfortable, with great views. The bathroom is downstairs, through the kitchen. We were there for a fortnight, and would have appreciated a washing machine (there is one, not yet plumbed in). However overall we loved the cottage, felt very at home, thought it was good value, and would like to return."
"One of the best cottages we have stayed in, with everything you'd need to make your stay special, in a beautiful location overlooking the Mell Fell hills."
