The small tranquil hamlet of Pennington is located on the lovely Lake District Peninsula, which offers beautiful walking and cycling opportunities. The start of the Haematite and Cumbrian Way footpaths can be found here, as well as the twin pubs at Great Urswick Tarn, well known in the local area for their great food and fine ales. The market town of Ulverston, also known as the "festival town" because of its lively year round events, is Pennington's nearest neighbour. Ulverston is the birthplace of Stan Laurel, and is the proud home of the one and only Laurel and Hardy museum. The town has many good shops, pubs and restaurants, a leisure centre and a cinema. The soft, sandy beaches and excellent birdwatching of the Furness Coast, and all the attractions of the National Park are easy to get to from here. There is fun for all the family at the South Lakes Wild Animal Park, Muncaster Castle, and the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway.

"On arrival your met by the owner, a bottle of wine, a bottle of beer and fresh eggs. The cottage is quaint and welcoming and situated up in the hills of the Lake District. Ulverston is accessible by foot and Barrow in Furness by car. A lovely stay at a lovely cosy little cottage. "

"After driving 400 miles to this cottage myself and my partner were pleased with the location, even with the sheep guarding the road out of the property that liked to play chicken with the car. The property is well sized to meet a couples needs for a place to stay whilst visiting Cumbria and offered a good location with a 15 to 20 minute drive North to get into the Lake District itself. Our only minor complaints and they are minor are that the stairs to get into the bedroom area are quite narrow and very steep so care is needed when going up and down the stairs.. And when we had some stormy weather the cottage did have some drafts around the main door and bathroom window. With those minor complaints in mind, and the are only minor! Do not let them put you off ... the cottage was a lovely place to stay. Complimentary eggs, milk and champagne were well received! The owners are very friendly and let you do your own thing with no interruptions and the local cats are also very friendly and don't mind being petted (Careful with the black and white one as she likes to nip/bite) Would definitely consider revisiting this cottage next year but me and my partner might choose another area of the UK to visit but should we want to revisit Cumbria we will most likely choose this cottage."

"This cottage is lovely. Modern while still having cottage charm. Wood burner and wood an added bonus. Loved the welcome pack of milk and a bottle of wine (nice touch), Well equipped cottage, in a good location for exploring the Lake District. Added bonus was the farm 'attractions' including three cats - as well as the goats, chickens and ducks that were on the site too."

"Basically a one room open plan modern cottage, bedroom is accessed via a short but steep staircase, for two. Fairly well equipped, just a few shortcomings i.e. no freezer compartment in fridge which we consider to be an essential appliance for self-catering especially in a remote location where the local village pubs do not serve food until the latter part of the week. Lack of instructions for some appliances could be a handicap for some. The cottage is grouped with another 4 holiday lets so you are not totally isolated. Ideal for walkers as there is a path quite close to the properties. It is possible to walk via the path network into Ulverston from the cottage, but be prepared for some hills though!! Overall we enjoyed our stay at the cottage and the stairs did not cause us two active pensioners any problems. We would certainly consider a future booking."

"The cottage was wonderfull, we had a warm reception when we arrived. A nice bottle of wine and some fresh free range eggs awaited us. The countryside and surrounding areas were very pleasant & peaceful. The town was only a matter of 10mins drive away & it was easy to explore the area and further afield. All in all a very good week."

"A great place to stay, unfortunately rather steep steps to the gallery (bedroom). Can be tricky during the night."

"Very clean and comfortable. Very well equipped. One small down is the stairs to the bedroom. It is narrow and steep. Elderly or disabled could find it difficult. The welcome pack is a nice touch. Lovely area without the crowds of the lake district."

"This cottage is ideal for a relaxing stay in the lakes. The cottage has all the mod cons you could wish for including a luxury bathroom central heating and a lovely log burner for the chilly evenings. But beware of the steep staircase particularly when nature calls in the night."

"I was able to quickly identify availability, cost, and detail of various cottages through the Sykes website, and the booking process was simple and straight-forward. Thimble Cottage itself was well presented, and furbished to a high-standard. As a group we booked both this cottage and the larger one next to it. The hosts had provided us with local farm eggs, bread, milk and a lovely bottle of wine which were all very well received. I will definitely be booking this specific cottage again, and intend to use Sykes in the future."

"We enjoyed our stay once we found the farm, It was very relaxing an ideal place to set out from for coast or mountains. Lots of places to eat close by, felt so refreshed after our week even though the weather was not so good, really enjoyed the museum Laurel and Hardy. The owners of the cottage were absolutely brilliant and the welcome pack and wine was really helpfull as it meant we did not have to rush out to the shops, nothing was to much trouble for the owners and we really enjoyed the log stove cosy night in. We hope to stay again and strongly recommend this property as it is modern clean and well equiped, and entertainment was provided by our hosts dog buster who can play football like I HAVE NEVER SEEN absolutely brilliant. Thanks for a lovely stay which did not break the bank. Graham and Lidia Toseland"
