Church Stretton is a pretty market town in the heart of rural south Shropshire. Described as "Little Switzerland", the town is surrounded by stunning scenery and is the major part of Shropshire's hill country. The town offers a good selection of pubs, tearooms, and specialist shops, as well as other attractions including fantastic walking opportunities on the Long Mynd; the fascinating Acton Scott Working Farm, and the ancient Stokesay Castle. Shrewsbury, Ironbridge, Ludlow, Much Wenlock and Bishops Castle are all historic local towns with much to offer to visitors, and they are all an easy drive away from Church Stretton, as are the beautiful Welsh Borders.
Reviews
"Stayed in October for a week... it was an absolute dream. A cake baked for arrival, spacious and clean. The hot tub and log fire were amazing. My partner, son and dog all feel the same. (Didnt smell like dog) The views are brilliant. It had literally every thing we needed from washing machine to a slow cooker. Plenty of walks in the area, stiperstones inn - great food, drink and service. There is also a little village shop selling most things. I would definately return as we were so sad to leave. My only critics that can't be altered or changed is the parking. Only just room for one car... You are able to leave your car at the stiperstones inn and also being 7 months pregnant I hadn't expected so many steep hills so be warned in icy conditions if you are to go winter time. I really can't praise this place enough."
"This was booked for a cold and wet weekend in January but it was an excellent choice. The hot tub was a real attraction and the cottage had absolutely everything that was needed, even things not often found in other holiday rentals. Great owners who work nearby, making it easy to pick up the keys and would have been great if there had been any problems ... but there were none. Being able to walk to the pub was a real bonus and an excellent time was had by all!"
"As stated in the title, this is now our third stay at the old chapel,a truly individual property set in a stunning location. A large vaulted living room with huge log burner creates a very relaxing atmosphere, our Malamute dog loves to lie by the glazed window looking out into the country side waiting to go up the hills again. The kitchen is well equipped, bedrooms and bathrooms are in excellent order, there's adequate parking for a large car (we were in a crew cab pick up),though you are better to drive past the chapel turn around and reverse in to park. Shrewsbury is in easy reach,as is Oswestry,Welshpool,Newtown, church Stretton and the very appealing Montgommery with its lovely ruined castle. Another great asset in its location is the pub (Stiperstones Inn) which does great food, and possibly the 8th wonder of the world aka Johns shop where you can buy anything from a pair of wellies a pack of sausages or a set of screwdrivers !. A great place to stay and we have already booked in for 2017 and 2018. LOVE IT."
"We had a fabulous week at The Old Chapel during February half term, which was very reasonably priced for a week during school holidays. We stayed here with my parents (for Mum's 60th) and we had various guests visiting us during our stay and they loved it too. Our dog George loved his stay too and came home happy and tired. The chapel was clean, tidy and kitchen was well stocked with all the bits and pieces you could need (and more!). The chapel felt very light and airy but warm and cosy at the same time, the beds were so comfy that I slept like a log every night. Wifi was good and a decent speed compared to other properties we've stayed at. Chapel is really well located for walking, there are numerous walks you can do (leaflets and maps in chapel with all the details). The hot tub was one of our favourite additions to the chapel, we used it everyday after our walks, it was the perfect way to relax. The Stiperstones Inn down the road was our second home for the week, we ate here everyday. Great pub grub at fab prices and friendly staff and customers that made us feel very welcome. Phil and Lara were on hand to sort out any problems we had and give us advise on places to go and see, truly lovely helpful owners (pub and chapel). Nextdoor to the pub is one of the best shops I have every been into! My dad went in every morning for the paper and we used it each day for bits and pieces, the shop sells everything you could possibly want and more, at great prices......seeing is believing!!!!! Everything about our stay was perfect, so much so we booked up with the owners for next year before we left! Can't wait to return :-)"
"Stayed here with my wife and adult daughter and two dogs having searched for places with hot tub taking two dogs! Arrived to bread baking in the kitchen and log stove ready if needed. Spent first night eating in the Inn and was a quiz night and our team of three became a team of thirteen in the bar with the locals and we won! Cracking welcome from the staff and locals and great laugh. The rest of the week was in the hills with the dogs and mountain biking and returning to a hot tub - who cares about the rain! Idea of cooking went out of the window with good pub group and a welcome in the inn why make it hard - it was a holiday? Dogs were welcome in the pub, and most of all the cottage did not smell of dogs as in previous places we have stayed. Beds and linen great - you do not need to take anything as its all there - even Wifi to keep the kids happy on FB! Bedrooms were warm, log stove was easy to get to grips with. Overall a perfect break in a great location, make the most of the area and make the most of the tub and cottage on your return"
"The Old Chapel was a lovely old building that had been very tastefully turned into welcoming holiday accommodation. It was very well equipped with everything you could need, including a wood-burning stove. The Hot Tub in the garden was wonderful, especially after a long hard day's walking in the Shropshire Hills. It is set in an extremely scenic spot overlooking the village, and within a very short distance of the local pub, which had a warm and friendly atmosphere - and also served excellent food. There was only a minor negative for me and that was the hand held shower in the en-suite bedroom, it was extremely difficult to regulate the temperature, but because there was another shower downstairs this was not a major problem."
"Unless you have a book - a very big book - of superlatives - and I don't! - then this review absolutely won't do justice to this exceptional holiday let. It not only does exactly what it 'says on the tin' - but so, so much more. Four of us stayed at The Old Chapel for 4 days and nights in November. Whilst it is in our home county, it is, without a doubt, the most relaxing place we have ever stayed in anywhere in this world. All plans to walk, read books, do craft work etc fell by the wayside from the time of our arrival. I fear we were too idle even to take any pictures of the Old Chapel - such was our level of relaxation. Set in beautiful countryside, with lovely views - this was quiet and calm at its very best and we so loved that. Even the first frosts of the year were so beautiful to see. The whole property is beautifully furnished and equipped. There is nothing we needed that hadn't been provided - even down to a complete range of spices! I have never seen so many drinking glasses styles provided for every possible type of drink! Then the hot tub and the log burner - hence the girls saying 'I've gone to heaven'. Having planned meal menus and taken along foods to cook - it won't come as any surprise that, being so relaxed - we were beckoned and then seduced [several times] by the local pub - The Stiperstones Inn - for meals and drinks. A very friendly, community orientated, pub providing real ale and a menu range to suit all tastes and pockets. Really great hosts here in Phil and Lara - who's prime motivation is making your visit enjoyable and what you want it to be - and not their convenience and profit. We had beautifully cooked meals and so enjoyed them. The Sunday roast was quite exceptional. I can't speak too highly of this holiday let folks - many such reviews say something like - we'll be back. We went one better and booked the same weekend in 2015 after being there for less than a day such was our delight in this property and the almost magical relaxing effect it has. So don't pass this by folks - it's more than a gem. We made no where near the use we could have of the offerings of the property or the surrounding countryside - but came home rested, recharged and read to do December!"
"The Old Chapel is a beautiful and tastefully decorated building and the view is delightful, especially from the hot tub! Phil and Lara were very accommodating and made sure we had everything we needed, including a fresh loaf of bread baking for us in the kitchen on arrival. The amenities are excellent and everything is kept to a high standard. We had a great week, and having the Stiperstones Inn on the doorstep a few minutes walk away meant that we didn't always have to cook for ourselves! Excellent food and booze in the pub. I would definitely return again and would also recommend the chapel to others. A great properly run by lovely people. Hope to see you again!"
