Surrounded by a unique landscape of moorland, hills, rivers and waterfalls, Alston is set in the North Pennines and is England's highest market town. This intriguing settlement boasts charming cobbled streets and was the filming location for ITV's productions of Jane Eyre and Oliver Twist. Long associated with poets, writers and artists, the wonderful location of Alston still serves as an inspiration to the craftspeople that live and work there. There is a wide range of unusual, independent shops in the town, including quality crafts and galleries. Visitors can also take a ride on one of the lovingly restored steam and diesel engines that run through the beautiful scenery of the South Tyne valley, whilst Nenthead Mines Heritage Centre makes a great family day out with its interactive exhibitions.

"Kings cottage was amazing from start to finish... I don't know where to beging with the great features this cottage has, it's cosy and historic with exposed beams and all the features you would expect of any cottage. Val the owner was great, very helpful with everything and it was a pleasure to talk to her... She even left us a cake for when we arrived :) Our first stay in kings cottage was amazing... We will be staying again in the future :) Amazing cottage in an amazing part of england"
"Kings cottage is in a quiet mews in the lovely town of Alston. It's a beautifully kept property with a well equipped kitchen and large lounge with very comfy sofas and a gas fuelled woodburner. Upstairs there's a spacious bedroom with the most comfortable bed ever and a bathroom. The owner has thoughtfully renovated the property throughout and it's really like home from home with a homemade cake to welcome you on arrival. The cottage is a few minutes walk to the town which has various shops and amenities. We loved it. Hopefully you will too!!"
"This is a very sensibly renovated cottage with accommodation ideal for a couple who want to explore the very beautiful and unspoilt North Pennines AONB - well deserving of the acronym. The cottage is situated in the middle of Alston, a small market town. The town is charming, could have been used for the Hovis ad, cobbled streets etc. Plenty of very good pubs serving excellent beer and pub grub (we liked "The Angel", a stone's throw from the cottage). The accommodation comprises a large open plan sitting room and sensible galley kitchen on the ground floor, with a large double bedroom and a decent bathroom on the second floor. All very clean, cosy and well equipped, can't fault it, would happily go back again. The owner is happy for pets to stay (not in the bedroom), and we went with our dog (who also apparently much enjoyed the fresh air and day long walks). Thank you Mrs Duncan, we enjoyed our stay very much. A few words to the wise - there is good mobile coverage in Alston, but not in the surrounding area. Outside term time there are no local buses - we took a very nice 11 mile ramble to the Lamley viaduct up the Pennine Way, picnic etc en route, with the intention of calling a cab for the return trip - but then lobster potted with no signal for my mobile provider ("3"), so had to walk home again... Better for such prospective 1-way walks to get the cab out and to then walk home ... cab numbers are posted outside the town hall/tourist information centre."
"Just back from a week's stay at King's Cottage in Alston. What a fantastic little spot. The cottage is ideal, in a fabulous location close to both the town and the country. It's dog friendly, so we could take our hound with us. King's Cottage has one bedroom, yet is quite spacious. The lounge area is big and has two good sized sofas. The kitchen is well equipped and made all the more welcoming with a homemade cake and tea tray waiting when we arrived, which was a lovely touch. There is plenty of local information available, including a book of local walks which are all on the doorstep. There's plenty to see in walking distance, including the waterfall just a few minutes down the lane. It's a lovely spot for a quiet getaway to recharge and escape the rat race."
"We stayed here from 5th to 13th Sept 2014 and had a brilliant time. The cottage was excellent, there was everything you could need. It was just like being at home. Val, the owner was extremely helpful and had the place spotless. Her mum even made us a lovely tea cake. I can thoroughly recommend this place. Alston itself is a lovely market town with a good few shops in it. Be prepared to walk up some hills though as the streets are quite hilly. I can really say that this was one of the loveliest places we have stayed for a long time. The weather was great too so that made it all the better."
"very comfortable cottage in a quiet location but only two or three minutes walk to village centre and pubs. fantastic countryside"
"this was a late choice for a holiday, as this was the first year with Merlin our pet Great Dane, location great for walks, local pub, The Turks Head, welcomed Merlin with open arms, local shops and garage, in short we hope to re-visit soon, and the owner of the cottage was friendly and very helpful"
"best cottage i have rented brill walks excellent pubs vgood so wos the food"
"This cottage was very well presented. Cozy, comfortable, it really did feel just like being at home. I did arrive a little early having had a long but trouble free journey and did meet the family that own it, and they are lovely people. The kitchen had everything you could need, the lounge was very comforable, and the bedroom was large and the bed very welcoming and comfortable also. The situation of the property is also very good as it is quiet at night but only seconds from the pubs and eateries of alston in one direction, and yards from a lovely walk by the river in the other direction. I was there on my own with my dog but I would happily recommend this to any couple. I do hope to return here at some time."
"Nice cottage well kept and in good location. Ideal for 2 people.Cottage is 3 min walk from the main street of Alston. Had never been to this town before and it was well worth a visit. It is ideally placed for walking and travelling on to the lake district.Having been however it was not the sort of place that I would say I must go back there. After a days walking or driving there are a few pubs where you could spend a relaxing evening. Our favourite was the Angell Inn which was small cosy and friendly . On the opposite side of the scale we found the Turks Head to be awful. A lot of beer was out of stock and I am afraid the attitude was oh well you will just need to have something else. For a one off week Alston is worth the trip."
"This cottage turned out to be more spacious, modern, and comfortable than I was expecting. The lounge was a good size with 2 sofas, and a 32" tv. The kitchen, bathroom and bedroom were all spacious with modern amenities which didn't spoil the old fashioned charm of the cottage itself. The cottage is located off the main road, down a sidestreet. The upside is that it is quiet. The downside is that parking can be a bit onerous, especially if the neighbour is parked there. Alston itself is a pleasant market town with a few nice walks available such as alongside one of its 2 rivers. If you are prepared to travel 20 miles you can reach places such as Ullswater, Hadrian's Wall, and High Force waterfall. There are a few pubs, cafes, restaurants, and takeaways in town. Having not spent any time in this area before, I found plenty to do in the week I was there and would recommend to others."
"The cottage was pretty and comfortable. Well Equipped. We did have a little bit trouble with the hot water for the shower/bath, but sorted it eventually. Alston is a nice little village and the pubs were friendly, and dog friendly too. All in all a very nice and relaxing stay."
"the owner was so helpful, and wish her all the best. it is an ideal romantic break and the property decor reflects that."
"The cottage was really spacious.cozy and romantic.Great friendly locals, spectacular scenery and easy to reach a variety of places.Would rebook, only down side was neighbours car parked the whole week right in front of the window and getting parked after a day out was challenging at times, but will be back."
