The farming community of Swythamley sits close to the River Dane, on the Staffordshire side of the river yet still in the beautiful area know as The Peak District. Local Swythamley Hall, originally a hunting lodge belonging to Abbey of Dieulacres, stands in fine parkland. The area has much historic significance – close by is Gun Hill, where Cromwell is believed to have located his canon aimed at the town of Leek. On the edge above Swythamley there is a famous landmark - the Hanging Stone, with a fine view over the surrounding countryside. There is fine walking and climbing on The Roaches, and many lovely cycle trails in the area. Alton Towers, Leek, Buxton and Ashbourne are all within easy reach.
Reviews
"Great customer service from the owners as they decorated the cottage for Christmas and bought candles when there was a power failure in the area due to the extreme weather conditions! The location was amazing, the house was incredibly warm with everything you could possibly need at your disposal. Great value for money for a big family Christmas. The only down side was the matresses were a little too soft for our liking!"
"We have just returned from a great weekend away with our family at this cottage. It is in a very peaceful area with lambs outside in the fields, which our grand-children loved to watch from the sun lounge. The house is really spacious and we loved all sitting round the large kitchen table having our meals. The cottage is exceptionally well equipped with everything you could need and more. The bedrooms were large, beds and pillows very comfortable. Parking for two cars was fine but three would be very tight. We spent Saturday at Alton Towers and on the Sunday drove into Stoke to visit Waterworld, an indoor swimming complex with lots of slides and flumes. Would definitely recommended to family and friends."
"We used the cottage as it promised to be ideal for four couples celebrating twin brothers' 65th birthday. It was all we hoped it would be. Warm, roomy, full of character. The kitchen was spacious and we lingered long in it. The conservatory was perfect for storing food and drink and logs. The fire was a treat in early winter. Lovely walks around nearby reservoirs. Leek easy to get to you. The cottage was not easy to find even with sat nav but we loved the isolation. The ship inn was a joy discovered late with exceptional food and ale though we were so comfortable in the cottage we ate in most nights."
"This cottage is lovely, with many original features, in a quiet rural location perfect for hiking. The house is very well equipped in the kitchen, and providing for small children. And we had a fabulous New Year's Eve stay there. Only minor points we had were that the living room was smaller than expected, if the kids had been a bi bigger I could imagine this being a bit more of a problem in the winter months if you can't get outside. No wifi - with no 3G coverage in the district it seems, wifi would have been useful for planning our days."
"Gun End Cottage is a lovely comfortable house set in pretty countryside. Spacious enough for 8 people plus toddler. The only slight drawback we found was the distance to the downstairs bathroom from the ground floor bedroom but only because my husband is disabled and needs assistance when walking. It wouldn't really be a problem for somebody with mild mobility problems. However we managed and still enjoyed our week there very much."
"We had a wonderful family holiday at Gun End Cottage, plenty of lovely walks near to a number of National Trust properties and the wonderful views from the conservatory were second to none. The cottage had every thing one required for eight of us, comfortable beds, a lovely sitting room where we were able to enjoy a log fire when the evening chilled although the central heating was more than adequate. We are certainly going to put it on the list for a return stay. Thanks ladies for the careful renovation it was really appreciated."
"We stayed here as a family group and found we had everything we needed. It was a little bit difficult to find - 2 of the 3 groups of us got lost on the way there. The parking for 3 cars was a bit of a squeeze but we managed. It's a lovely house with an interesting history and it's fun to see the 'Homes under the Hammer' video. There is some lovely countryside nearby and we enjoyed a walk to Lud's Church and The Roaches."
"This is a beautiful house in idyllic surroundings, presented to a very high standard. It was a delight to be able to sit in the lean-to conservatory and watch the lambs in the field no more than a few feet away. It was quite surreal to sit in the lounge and watch an episode of 'Homes under the Hammer' filmed in the same room! A perfect location for exploring the Peak District and destinations such as Buxton, Bakewell and the Heights of Abraham. An added bonus was the discovery of the Wincle Brewery in a Farmyard just over a mile along the lane! The Ship Inn at Wincle is also highly recommended, especially for its food."
"a wonderful cottage set in beautiful surrounding in the country no hustle and bustle peace and quite but not to far from the local town of Leek. very well equipped cottage all you need is your self and some food, spotlessly clean, highly recommended."
"We travelled with our two children and their Grandad and Auntie. We chose this cottage, partly because of it's location and also as we had seen it on the 'Homes Under the Hammer' programme and liked what we saw. We were not disappointed. Located in an idylic setting, the cottage is lovingly and beautifully decorated and a joy to stay in. It has a lovely garden which our children enjoyed playing in (there are a selection of outdoor toys in the shed) as well as the use of a playground and football field in the community centre directly opposite. We had a very useful welcome pack waiting for us from the owners and the neighbours were very friendly and helpful. The cottage was ideally situated to gain access to all that is on offer in the Peak District and surrounding area. Alton Towers, Buxton, Bakewell, Trentham Monkey Forest and Manifold Valley Cycle Track to name but a few. We were busy everyday and it was great to come back to some peace and quiet at the cottage. Thank you so much to the owners for sharing this wonderful house with us!!"
"This a beautiful cottage, wonderfully and lovingly restored. Excellent amenities, beautiful garden and surroundings. Great views from every room, and very peaceful. We just loved everything about it, and hope to return."
"We took advantage of the extra long weekend and stayed at Gun End Cottage for Jubilee week. With 3 double bedrooms and 1 twin it was perfect for our family - 6 adults, a 2-year old and a 12-week old. It's charmingly old-fashioned with leaded windows and feature fireplaces, but has all the mod cons such as power showers, washer, dryer, TV and DVD. It's literally in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by sheep and a handful of other cottages. You'll find the nearest shops in Leek, about 5 miles away, and the nearest pub about a mile and a half down the road in Wincle. We'd recommend Gun End to anyone looking for a chilled out base to explore the peaks."
"We took our three children (ages 4-6) for a two week family holiday. Blessed by good weather, which helped. They (and we) had a fantastic time and they never stop talking about the things they did there - both the location itself and the surrounding area of the Peaks. Although on the edges of the Peaks, the house is very close to the Roaches area which has to rank as some of the most outstanding countryside in the UK, IMO. The house was well equipped, though the DVD player didn't work properly which seems to have been noted by previous guests and not rectified. We also had a problem with the heating, which took the owners a few days to sort out, though they did make every effort to resolve it. Beautiful quiet situation. We tried to book it for the following year but left it too late and it was booked out! :-("
"One of the best holiday homes we have rented. Would highly recommend it.Lovely part of the country. Quiet and rural but near to the particular places we wanted to visit i.e alton Towers. So much to see and do.Something for everyone."
"Our family had a great week at Gun End Cottage. The only thing that was disappointing was the weather but it didn't stop us enjoying the area. The cottage had all we needed and the owner left us bread, milk, coffee and biscuits for our arrival, even special cakes for my husband and son's gluten free diet.Every thing was very nice.We met the owners and they are very friendly people. We would love to return sometime."
"Great cottage if you want a peaceful, semi secluded break with some nice scenery. Lovely property but didn't fully meet our needs as the living area would have been better for our group if it were more open."
