The village of Torthorwald can be traced to the 13th century and the ruins of Torthorwald Castle date from the 15th century. Only 4 miles away is Dumfries whilst the surrounding area contains many castles, abbeys and even a Tibetan Buddhist Centre and is a good centre for touring the rest of the area - the spectacular triangular Caerlaverock Castle and its nature reserve; New Abbey and the Solway Coast - and a starting point for travelling west into the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright and the rest of Galloway.

"The first holiday cottage we have ever stayed in as we had our small dog with us. Our expectations were exceeded in every department. The cottage is fully furnished with not a single item that you would need to bring from your own home. It's furnished to a very high standard and beautifully kept. However the jewel in the crown is the wonderful garden. It's large, contains a stream and trees and offered many hours of great fun playing with our dog, she didn't want to leave! The view of the surrounding countryside is beautiful and we will definitely stay here again the next time we holiday in this area."

"Despite the cottage being compact we never felt it was cramped as best use of the available space has been made. It is on a roadside but very little traffic uses it as it only serves this property and two neighbours. From the garden furniture to the kitchen appliances and entertainment, everything is to a high standard. The conservatory is a great place to eat and relax but also to shed any wet clothes and footwear and dry off the dog. Thank you to the owners for the lovely shortbread and wine! The only downside is that having had so much use of the conservatory we want future holiday cottages to have one and that restricts choice!"

"Lovely cottage in a quiet location just 10 mins drive from the centre of Dumfries. The cottage was spotlessly clean and well equipped, just the place for a relaxing break. The conservatory at the rear of the cottage is the perfect place to sit and unwind whilst watching the wildlife in the garden."
