The small town of Gatehouse of Fleet lies on the Solway Firth in the midst of Dumfries & Galloway with sandy beaches just a five minute drive away. There are several shops in the town including a small supermarket, chemist, bank and post office, along with a kilt making centre and two cafes. All four pubs in the town have restaurant facilities and welcome children.
Reviews
"Gatehouse of Fleet is a hidden gem in Dumfries and Galloway. However, even more of a gem is West Gable which forms part of a former church that has been superbly converted to provide some very comfortable and well fitted self catering accommodation. West Gable is a mirror image of the adjoining East Gable. It provides three bedrooms over 3 floors (one ensuite) together with a well fitted kitchen/dining/sitting area on the ground floor (plus utility room and wc), a family bathroom on the first floor and a lovely lounge on the second floor. There is lots to do in the area and West Gable provides a wonderful base. Highly recommended. I will be back again as soon as possible."
"Lots of positives to agree with in others' reviews below. Delightful property, nice location -- the town has plenty of pubs with at least one excellent restaurant. The Mill, two minutes' walk away, does breakfasts and lunch if the weather is a bit Scottish. Lovely beaches nearby, a few without a surrounding of caravans: we found one (at Nun Mill Bay) for the traditional beach bonfire and barbecue. The Galloway steaks that we cooked there from the butcher (J Hall) at 49 St Mary Street Kircudbright were out of this world. All recommended +++ !"
"A converted Church that inside looks nothing like the outside. Interior is very modern with plenty of space. Ground floor has a large entrance vestibule suitable for storing shoes and coats etc. Main entrance hall with staircase and at the end of the corridor a downstairs WC with utility room - washing machine. Large kitchen diner and attached sitting area with two large sofas and a small TV/entertainment centre. Large table with plenty of chairs and a long pew bench. Views from windows of river. First floor - large twin bedroom. Double bedroom.Bathroom with WC and bath. Second floor - large double bedroom with en suite. Good sized sitting room with views of river. TV and DVD. Two large sofas. Decor is modern and bright. Mixture of modern wooden floors and carpet and stone floors in kitchen. Excellent range of cooking bits and pieces. Comfortable beds. Very quiet but in the centre of the village. Private parking for two cars "end to end". If coming back to this area and available we would book again. There was only two of us but this let could easily accommodate six with plenty of space for all. Ideal for two couples. Highly recommended."
"Lovely spacious accommodation, ideally located in Gatehouse of Fleet. Two generations of our family stayed comfortably for the week in this quirky, imaginatively-converted former church hall. Large kitchen / dining / living room on the ground floor with utility / wc. Living room on the 3rd floor gave lovely views of the River Fleet. Well-appointed, providing home-from-home facilities including dish washer and washing machine. Down-sides: mattresses on beds too soft and cleaning could be ramped up a notch (the en-suite bathroom especially)."
"We recently stayed with family at this property and thoroughly enjoyed our time here. The location is picturesque and accessible. The facilities were spacious and comfortable. We had 6 people staying in the home and it had everything we needed. Having three bathrooms ensured that all of us had enough space to get ready without having to wait. The beds are quite nice and I was able to get restful sleep. West Gable has been very creatively decorated and each room has it's own unique and modern feel. When seen from the outside the building is an old church, but completely different inside. I would highly recommend West Gable to friends and family. Only downside is they lack a tumble dryer (a laundry drying line is offered) which proves to be difficult in the cold weather months."
"We stayed here with my folks and siblings, and found the place spacious for 6 adults. Everyone had plenty of space in their rooms, and the decor was fresh and modern. It's almost brilliant, just missing a couple of those finishing touches, but still very nice, bright, and airy. The building itself is fascinating and full of character. I know it was November, but the stone floor in the kitchen can get chilly, so take a good pair of slippers. And if you're staying on the top floor, beware, that's where all the heat ends up!"
"Wonderful accommodation in a very special part of Scotland. The cottage was perfect in terms of layout, facilities and location. The kitchen diner was especially perfect for lazy family evenings. A great part of Scotland, despite our visiting during the winter closedown for many attractions. Would love to return and would recommend the cottage to anyone."
