Situated close to well-known Aysgarth Falls and the impressive Bolton Castle - which dates back to 1379 – the idyllic Wensleydale village of Carperby is set within excellent walking country. During the 17th Century this charming little town was an important centre for Quakerism. Today, the largest building in the village is still the classically styled Friends Meeting House, which overlooks the market cross and village green. There is also a pub serving good food as well as an excellent range of amenities in the nearby market town of Leyburn. The villages of Swaledale and Arkengarthdale are both easily accessible from Carperby and make for lovely days out whilst the surrounding countryside provides a wealth of walking and cycling paths amidst the charming scenery. Visitors can also enjoy excellent bird watching in the area.
Reviews
"We stayed at Barnbrook over the Christmas week. The cottage surpassed our already high expectations; clean, spacious and with beautiful views from the bedrooms. Our children absolutely loved the cottage and were kept entertained with games, books and wifi. They both managed the walk down to Aysgarth Falls (both under 5). Absolutely worth the money for a more reasonably priced cottage. Would have been a bonus if there was a Christmas tree up over the festive period but this is only a suggestion for a 'cherry on the top' of an excellent stay."
"Barnbrook was in a lovely part of the country. The only problem we had with the house was trying to dispose of our rubbish. Otherwise all was very successful. Lots of things to do for adults as well as children. The castle was a great success, as was the cheese!"
"Had a great week in the cottage. Friendly & helpfull people in the area. Heating system slightly confusing."
"We were expecting a quiet retreat but it was quite noisy. Impossible to relax with windows open in the extreme heat of the evening as next door neighbours were relaxing outside the window and children running on the gravel roadway, from front to back of house playing. A car was then parked in the main drive with it's radio on, which we felt was inconsiderate. The parking was very tight and quite difficult with the outside layout shared, manoevering to exit caused a chip on car from the rough wall, we constantly felt we may be trapped in our space by the number of vehicles sharing the parking spaces. The decor was drab and depressing and we felt it could all do with updating. There was no full-length mirror. However, we felt the kitchen area was spacious and light and we spent most of our week in this room."
"The Cottage was very clean ,Had every thing in the kitchen that you needed had a good selection of Pamphlets to help us plan our days out plenty of games for children to do at night Only drawback cost of meals at local"
"The brochure description was good and the price fair. We always look for cottages with parking and that do not take pets as we have had problems years ago. The cottage was in the a small village with a good pub/restaurant but unfortunately no shop, knowing this from the information provided prior to travel we went prepared. The very pleasant sounding owner provided us with sufficent information on the locality and access to the property. The cottage was beyond our expectations and provided nearly enough amenities that we could easily had lived there for a lengthy period of time. The large kitchen diner was just what we were after. We loved the location, also the fact that we did not necessarily have to take the car out to find good walks and we did a few from the house itself. We took a few drives also and just loved everything the places, and the people. When we were doing our Leyburn Shawl walk we had come off the short stretch of main road we had to use when going down a lane which would eventually take us to the Hall and Wensley village a farmer and his wife stopped their vehicle and had a chat to us. How good is that? The peace and tranquility was lovely and as you have asked for a downside -there was no view from the living area and only one small window in the lounge, but hey I've only mentioned that because you asked! We will certainly return."
