Approximately eight miles to the west of the historic City of Durham itself is the lovely village of Lanchester. Set in the beautiful countryside of County Durham, this village took its name from the Roman fort of Longovicium, situated half a mile to the south-west. Today, archaeologists are still drawn to this charming settlement because of the Roman connection with the fort and the neighbouring villages, situated on the old 'Roman Dere Street. The Norman church was - along with a number of the surrounding farms - built using stones from the original Longovicium fort. The village now offers a good range of shops, pubs and restaurants and the surrounding countryside is full of excellent walks, as well as historic attractions. Just 20 miles away is the city of Newcastle, which provides the usual cosmopolitan entertainment's, whilst for those in search of sun and sand will enjoy the beaches and castles of the North Sea Coastline.
Reviews
"The cottage was blissfully comfortable, quiet, relaxing and spotlessly clean. The cottage was stocked with everything we could need for a family of 3 for a week, including washing machine, dishwasher, wi-fi and crockery. The owners live in the cottage next door but are in no way intrusive - they are very friendly and welcoming and are on-tap if anything is needed. It is also a great location - very quiet with fantastic views but with easy access of many family friendly activites. This week we have; visited Beamish Museum (twice), Gibside (National Trust property and gardens), Durham, Newcastle, Druridge Bay (beautiful, clean, quiet beach) and had a boat ride on the Tyne. We have had a wonderful week and will definitely stay at Granary Cottage again. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED."
"Have stayed in this idealic cottage several times and will definetely return. Owners so friendly and there is loads to do in the area.Cottage is so comfortable, we always spend a day lazing and enjoying it and the scenery."
"By far the best equipped place we have ever stayed. Very friendly owners who will help and advise you if you need it. A great base to explore Couny Durham or further if you choose. My family highly recommends a visit to Beamish Museum and a trip up to Bamburgh castle."
"We were most impressed with the style and quality of this cottage. It had everything we needed with a large kitchen/diner and beautiful lounge. Lots of leaflets with local attractions and some good reading material The coutryside location was perfect for us with our dog. Lanchester provided a good location for walks with the dog and had all the shops we needed. I would reccommend its use at any time of year."
"Absolutely perfect cottage and location.Everything you could want of a cottage with stunning views and friendly but unintrusive owners next door. Short drive to lovely village for good shops and food."
"Charming cottage in easy reach of the many places of interest in Durham made for a great weeks break."
"We all enjoyed are stay. Great get away with friendly owners who take pride in looking after their guests. Will be going back for another relaxing time."
"It was a joy to get 'home' to this beautiful cottage and its surroundings after long days out and about. Breakfast in the conservatory was a pleasure watching the birds and horses; but the evenings relaxing were the best. Myself and two friends had promised ourselves trips up to the local, or out for a meal each night, but the cottage was so cosy and comfortable, we didn't want to move - so just made our own meals in the fantastic kitchen - which had everything, and spent enjoyable evenings in the delightful sitting room watching TV, reading, writing or talking. So much thought has gone into the comfort of the visitors, that we couldn't fault a thing. Even hot water bottles in the superb large bedrooms and plenty of books for the adults and games for the children. As for the delightful owners - what can we say ? Thank you for the greeting on arrival, the bowl of fresh eggs in the kitchen. Your kindness and help throughout the week. We'll be back. Thats for sure !!"
"A lovely clean and homily cottage in a lovely quiet location, with great views. Well equipped with a log fire. Little touches like having logs and rolled up paper available for the fire made all the difference. Would recommend and will probably be back ourselves one day."
"a lovely week of mixed warm and cold front weather offering atmospheric views. Our daughter ran the Great North Half Marathon and raised several thousand pounds for the National Society for autism, she's a Specialist Nurse. Hurray !"
"We were made to feel very welcome, but at the same time the owners were not a bit intrusive whilst being there if needed. The cottage is very comfortable and well appointed. Nothing was missing and even the TV had a larger screen than usual with full freeview. The location is quiet without being isolated and there are many places to visit at all points of the compass. It is ideal for visiting Durham which we needed for our son's graduation day. Chrissie and Gavin have succeeded in making this a real home from home and we really look forward to coming again."
"A very well appointed house both comfortable and welcoming as were the owners. We hope to return and will recommend to family and friends wholeheartedly. Area has many different activities and interests available and so should suit everyone at any age.Horses, ponies & chickens endearing!"
"Very warm welcome from the adjacent owner, but not intrusive. Lovely house, very well equipped and clean. Large kitchen with dining area. Fantastic open fire with a constant, plentiful supply of logs. Could have spent the week indoors doing jigsaws and playing games, but there was lots to explore in the area. Lanchester had sufficient shops for us, plus a good Italian restaurant. Durham within easy reach. Well positioned for exploring Northumberland - Hadrian's wall, Killhope Lead mines & Souter lighthouse were all excellent. Would definitely stay again. Only drawback (minr) was the need to drive everywhere."
"We have stayed in this cottage three times while our son was at Durham University. It provides a peaceful base and in winter the log fire makes it a cosy retreat. There are lovely views from the triple aspect sitting room. The owners are very kind and helpful. The cottage is nicely furnished and the beds are comfortable. There is ample linen and towels. The only downside is that there is only one WC which is in the bathroom and there is no dishwasher. The surrounding countryside is lovely and quite undiscovered and there is much to see and do - the cities of Durham and Newcastle, roman sites, castles, industrial heritage, walks and the coast."
"A very comfortable cottage in a lovely setting. Friendly and very helpful owners. Close to Durham and Beamish, which provide wonderful days out. Hope to return."
"exellent hosts, could'nt do enough for you, property very clean and comfortable, perfect for relaxing, ideal location for days out,, village of lanchester couple of miles away, enough shops and pubs, would go back again anytime"
