Set in the York Dales, the pretty Teesdale village of Staindrop has always been closely associated with the fortunes of nearby Raby Castle. This impressive building is open to the public and is one of the finest in England. Extended and modified over the centuries, the castle is medieval in origin and boasts a walled garden and 200-acre deer park. The village of Staindrop itself has many interesting shops, pubs and cafes, all set around its long village green. The popular market town of Barnard Castle is only five miles away and, in addition to it's famous fort, is home to the Bowes Museum and a wide selection of shops and tea-rooms. The area also offers many exceptional walking and cycling routes through the beautiful countryside.

"Wanted to visit the north and the Dales, relax, visit some well known places like Beamish, NRM Shildon, High Force, etc. and found much more was here to see. This was the perfect base, child friendly, (3 kids in our group ages 6 to 10), set in a beautiful situation, well fitted out cottage, we loved it. We all agreed that it would be nice to come back. Great service, great spot, we give it an a+."

"Surrounding area was very interesting. House was a very spacious and well appointed renovation. Very hot water on instant supply. Owners were very friendly. Negatives - the oven took a lot of understanding, as did the dishwasher, and the cow byre was too close. No smell inside the house but outside was quite often a bit smelly."
