Known by the locals as Llanfair PG, the Anglesey village of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, also known by its shortened name of Llanfairpwllgwyngyll has the longest place name in Europe. It translates from Welsh as "St Mary's church in the hollow of the white hazel near to the fierce whirlpool and the church of St Tysilio of the red cave" and is situated close to the Menai Straits, just off the Britannia Bridge. Have your name taken next to the village nameplate at the railway station, plus walk past the octagonal Toll House, towards Menai Bridge, which will bring you to the Marquis of Anglesey statue and column which, for a small fee, you can climb the 115 steps to the top for superb views of the countryside and coastline. Also close by are several good pubs with restaurants, craft and gift shops and cafes.
Reviews
"The cottage is beautiful, clean, tidy, warm, I cannot fault it. It is a mix of modern yet keeping the characteristics of an older house too. Both double rooms look out over the mountains which is beautiful to wake up to. Although we didn't use it, the log burner would be lovely in the colder months. A very short walk away is a lovely beach, great for walking or running along - it was about 6kms round trip to a beautiful national trust property along the sea front. Highly recommend the cottage - it's lovely in so many ways! "
"We had a fantastic but all too short stay at Menai View. The view from the lounge and bedrooms over the Menai Straits is unbeatable. Quality of furnishings and general house is of the highest order. Lanfair PG is a perfect location to explore Anglesey and Snowdonia, with all the main sights in driving distance. If you don't feel like moving too far, you can walk along the beach just a stones through from your front door. Great restaurants in Menai Bridge and Beaumaris if you fancy a night out (check out Dylan's in Menai Bridge). If you can get Menai View for a good price, stop looking and book. "
