A small and compact village, Ravenstonedale has much to offer the visitor seeking a quieter experience than the nearby Lake District National Park provides. It is a pretty village; traditional whitewashed stone cottages and stone walls border the fields, whilst the Raven brook trickles by. St Oswald's church is largely from the Georgian era, comprising a solid structure with a simple square tower. In addition, there are elements from older buildings incorporated in it, and the base of a Saxon cross just outside. To the north of the church, excavations in 1920 revealed the foundations of a 13th Century Gilbertine Abbey. Ravenstonedale is a fantastic base for exploring the Lakes to the west or the Yorkshire Dales, just a short drive to the east. Those who prefer to stay closer to home can explore the Howgill Fells, the rounded hills which signal the start of the Lakeland ranges.
Reviews
"We received a warm welcome on arrival to this lovely warm cottage. It was very clean & spacious with a well equipped kitchen. The position was ideal to explore the Dales, the Lakes & County Durham. Plenty of parking and walks from the cottage. Several decent pubs to eat nearby and very easy to get back to M6 motorway. Many thanks."
"What a find! Friendly owners next door, 2 decent pubs (for beer and food) on the doorstep and Howgill Fells for walking in in solitude but being close enough to the village of RavenstoneDale for a quick return. Just 8 minutes from the M6 too (rather than an hour or more trying to get into the National Park). Would definitely stay here again."
"Our stay at Oaklea was first class. The cottage and gardens were lovely with every facility we could wish for. We would be happy to stay there again or recommend it to others."
"Superb cottage, lots of space and very clean and tidy. Very good facilities and very comfortable. Owners next door, very friendly and helpful, and great garden space and local walks for our dog - labradoodle."
