The town of Allendale was once the centre of a busy lead mining area, and many relics of the mining era remain around the area. Allendale is ideally placed for access to Carlisle to the west, Hexham to the east or the Roman Wall just to the north. There are lots of walks and unspoilt villages in the area, which is an ideal location for exploring the surrounding countryside or travelling further north to the glorious Heritage Coastline.

"Second stay at Finney Hill Green and no less wonderful than the first. The surroundings are a typical Northumbrian landscape, which is to say stunning. Vast, open skies with an equally open vista before you. Whatever the weather, it entices the imagination in this magical landscape. The barn itself is first class, extremely clean and homely and furnished to an excellent level. Facilities are all you could need for a week or more. The hosts are very hospitable. Very ready to help (even well you set the fire alarm off accidentally!) and make sure you are well looked after for your stay. Visiting animals are a bonus and watch out for the Ginger cat, he looks like he is a real 'bruiser' but just wants a fuss and is more affectionate than my own cats! As I've already said this is our second visit and it won't be our last. You can't get better than Finney Hill Green and this is after just under 20 years of visiting the area."

"We have been using holiday cottages for quite a few years now and this one was absolutely wonderful. A beautiful quiet spot with windows facing the hill. Great wildlife to be seen on the doorstep without even reaching for the walking boots! Viv and Richard couldn't have been more helpful with the welcome pack and local advice. They have a lovely smallholding next door so lots to be learnt and seen with regards to their animals and fresh eggs too. Would definitely re-book this cottage as quite apart from the quality of the accommodation there is so much of interest in the area that a week is nowhere near enough to do it justice."

"We try to visit Northumberland every year normally staying in or around Alnmouth. However, this year we headed west to Allendale and Finley Hill Green. If you like peace and quiet in stunning scenery, then this is the place for you. The barn is attached to the owners house and has fields on three sides. The owners have a small head of cattle in the fields you drive through. These are beautiful dexters, who can be gently inquisitive. The barn itself is stunning. The workmanship is of a high standard, as are the fittings, and the furniture is comfortable. The bedrooms too are comfortable with the double quite generous with an excellent on suite. Parking is in the adjacent field and the property is accessed through a five bar gate. As I mentioned, the cattle (if they are in the field) are inquisitive, so be prepared for them licking your car! Easily cleaned off. Plenty of wildlife to enjoy, with a regular cock pheasant taking advantage of droppings from the feeder with the jackdaws. Lapwings in the field with masses of rabbits. There was a box of their own hens eggs (delicious) and a small selection of fruit on arrival. Allendale is a mile away via footpath or road, and has a small selection of shops that covers all the essentials, together with three pubs. We frequented the Golden Lion which serves good food at a very reasonable price, and has the bonus of its own micro brewery, which produces very drinkable ale. I can't recommend this place enough, and we will certainly return"

"This accommodation is very quiet and peaceful with great countryside views. There are two bedrooms both of which were spacious and well furnished. In fact the furnishings all round are of good quality. The bed was extremely comfortable and sometimes this can be an issue with some properties. After all, when you are on holiday you still need a good nights sleep. It was also a very warm place to stay and the temperatures did dip outside to close to freezing but the cottage stayed warm and that was with the heating turned off over night. If there was a downside it was just that the car was parked a few yards away as there was a public footpath just to the front. However, we never saw anybody walk past the week we were there and would not have been a problem if they did. If you like watching sheep and birds and listening to the curlews then this is the place to stay, yet not too far off the beaten track !"
