A large west Norfolk conservation village with pretty red brick and flint faced cottages, Castle Acre is set within rural landscape and boasts an historical past. The village retains the ruins of a Norman castle with earthworks, the beautiful church of St James and the ruins of a Cluniac Priory. The main entrance into this attractive village is through Bailey Gate, a 13th Century flint gateway, under which pilgrims have passed for hundreds of years on their way to the shrine at Little Walsingham, a pilgrimage which still takes place today. There is a large village green surrounded by lime trees, cottages, traditional tea rooms, two public houses serving meals and further along the road, a village store. A wonderful base for exploring Norfolk.

"a lovely last minute break. The cottage has recently had a new bathroom and heating system. This is my second stay, great welcome pack too!!"

"My boyfriend and I had a lovely weekend staying at this cottage! It was the perfect base from which to explore the local village and the nearby priory, and was surprisingly large for our needs. The location is amazing - There was a cute cafe and a welcoming pub within walking distance, and it was fun to explore on foot. The village itself is charming and completely unspoiled, and the residents were very friendly and made us feel completely relaxed. It was a short walk from the village to the priory, and there were a number of countryside walks to choose from which we'd love to come back and explore more of in the future! The cottage itself was very clean and well looked after, and we really appreciated the welcome basket which was a thoughtful touch and made us feel at home! While we spent most of our time exploring the countryside, we loved the coziness of the front room which had a real log fire and comfy sofas. The rest of the cottage was also surprisingly large and spacious, especially the kitchen/dining area, and the twin bedroom upstairs. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay, and look forwards to coming back in the future! Shirley & Ben"

"We booked to stay at Pear Tree Cottage as a last minute get away and we were extremely glad we did! The cottage is in a wonderful peaceful, little village with plenty of countryside walks right on the doorstep. The village itself boasts not only a Castle but also an impressive Priory as well as welcoming pubs and a well-stocked shop - all within a short walk of the cottage! The cottage itself was very clean and well-equipped; everything we needed was provided. There was even a dishwasher and washing machine. The guide put together by the owners was extremely helpful and even included tips on the places to eat nearby. We were surprised that there was quite so much space upstairs in the cottage, as quite often with older buildings the roof is so low! However, the sensible layout meant we had plenty of space and were very comfortable. The bed was honestly one of the most comfortable I've ever slept in, and the sheets were of an outstanding quality. It made such a noticeable difference. The cottage was lovingly decorated and very homely. Perfect for night in by the fire with a movie and takeaway from the local chip shop. The bathroom was clean and toilet paper was provided. The shower was decent and the water was a good temperature. Even though the cottage looked quaint from the outside, the rooms were all a good size so we had plenty of space for both us and our dog. The garden space was lovely and well-established, with a secure fence so we knew the dog was safe. For a great day out with the dog (s), we'd recommend heading to Wells-next-the-sea, there's a fantastic dog friendly cafe right next to a beach with plenty of space for your four legged friend to have a really good run. Norfolk is extremely doggy friendly! We had a truly wonderful time staying at Pear Tree Cottage and would wholely recommend it. Thank you!"

"Lazily decorated - awful bathroom - very small bath which would be fine if the shower was ok but it wasn't - rusty blinds and soap from the 1970's. Very uncomfortable beds. Damp smell masked by overpowering scent diffuser that was so strong we had to put it outside. Rotten skirting boards. No loo paper on arrival. Old fashioned welcome basket with condensed milk and other bits we would never use (would have preferred loo roll) Good points - lovely location and comfy sofa."

"Rented this property through Sykes Cottages, chosen because of its location in Castle Acre (walking Peddars Way) and because of its broadband facility. However, the latter is extremely slow and just about adequate for email but not web browsing. The village of Castle Acre is regarded by estate agents as 'highly desirable' and one can see why with its church, priory and castle. However on day three of our week, the fighter jets started roaring overhead completely disturbing the tranquility of the place. I understand this is an issue for most of Norfolk! Upon arrival we immediately filled the kettle but found the switch to be 'faulty'. Rang the owner's landline to find he was on holiday. There was no information pack with alternative contact information so rang Sykes after which the housekeeper who resides in the village called us and dealt with the issue plus other matters which I brought to her attention. I am pleased to report the beds are comfortable, not something to be taken for granted on holiday rentals. There is plenty of hot water and please note there is also a dishwasher in the kitchen, but this is omitted from the property details. The lounge furniture is also very comfortable. There is clearly a parking issue with this property. I drive a Ford S-Max. There is no way it would fit in the parking space next to the side door - small cars only and even then its a tight fit because of the narrow lane in which the house is located. I was asked on day one to move my car because a neighbour thought another neighbour would be offended as it was 'her' space so had to move it up the lane next to a building site for the weekend. Its now parked outside the front door with inches to spare, just as well I have front/rear reversing sensors! Overall I would rate this property as 3 start- I am sure it could be made 4 star which a little more TLC."
