The historic, medieval Somerset village of Montacute is four miles from Yeovil and most well known for the National Trust's impressive Montacute House, a stunning Elizabethan mansion built for Sir Edward Phelips, the prosecutor of Guy Fawkes. The village centre and conservation area features an array of picturesque hamstone cottages, two thriving pubs, a Post Office, and a fascinating radio and television museum. With ancient Sherborne and the scenic Dorset coastline both easily accessible, you will find that a week is not nearly long enough to enjoy everything on offer within a short drive of this lovely Somerset village!
Reviews
"Excellent place to stay. Beautiful house idyllic surroundings. Loved the house and loved the area. Will definitely be back. House was well equipped and had a lovely atmosphere. One of the nicest places we have stayed."
"We have just returned from a weeks vacation stopping in this property, the building is beautiful but what has let the property down is presentation, the property was not cleaned very well, muck and grit upon entering property, dirty oven, baking trays filthy and need replacing also grease left in frying pan, stained rug in living room, upstairs toilet seat unstable and toilet stained, dirty bathroom sink with grime underneath, cold tap on sink can barely be turned on, mould around bath and shower screen, King size mattress stained, bedding old, stained and discoloured, if this property had a complete spruce and clean and replace items that clearly need replacing then I would consider coming back but at it's present state I would not consider."
"Me and the family went for a 5 night break over New Years eve, such a beautiful village, lovely walks with my 3 year old over at the Manor House. The locals made us feel very welcome in the pub, house was spotlessly clean, beautiful decorated and so comfy. Would love to go back "
"We actually stayed in this place for around half an hour.! We had arrived a little earlier than our 3:00 check in. Whilst parked outside we saw the cleaner locking up and she left the kitchen rubbish at the front door! On entering the property there was a distinct musty, dirty smell. It appeared that she had slept in the bed and had a bath ( remnants of bubble bath in the bath!) She most certainly hadn't done any cleaning! . The sink in the bathroom had an old cracked bar of soap with a hair and what appeared to be some sort of creature on the end! The cooker was covered in a greasy film. The whole place made me feel quite ill. We promptly re packed the car and headed home. After submitting numerous photos we were refunded the full amount."
"The Tudor Rose in Montacute was wonderful. We loved our week there and hope to return someday. It was our first visit to England and we found Montacute to be very quaint. Within walking distance of the Montacute House grounds and two pubs that served good food we could simply relax and enjoy ourselves on the rainy fall days. When we wanted to go further afield, there was much to see of interest in the surrounding areas. The house itself was comfortable. I had never had the type of heating system they had in the house and was worried I'd be cold in England in October but I felt quite warm and toasty. It was just the two of us although it would have been comfortable with a family. The staircase is steep for USA standards and if I was bringing young children I"d want a safety gate at the top. Great parking availability. Close to the road but in a tiny town so we did not notice any road traffic noise when we were sleeping. The kitchen was fine. I'd love to return in the summertime. We did have trouble with the wi-fi but the owners were contacted and worked with us to fulfill our needs so no complaints about that. We were their first renters so this glitch has probably been fixed. Close to stores for supplies (groceries, etc.) but we did not cook as much as planned because there were two pubs with good food and it was nice to be able to walk to dinner and back."
