Arnside is situated on the southernmost tip of the Lake District in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where low limestone hills, marshy plains and deciduous woodlands characterise the surrounding land. This former fishing port has retained many of the features from its past. The beautiful pier and port areas of the village offer stunning views across the Kent Estuary as well as providing an enduring reminder of Arnside's illustrious history. Within easy touring distance are the Lake District and Lune Valley, the Yorkshire Dales and the Forest of Bowland, a great base for exploring this wonderful area.
Reviews
"Recently visited Thornfield for my sisters 30th birthday weekend. It comfortably slept 12 adults for the weekend & all beds were very comfy. The attention to detail was second to none, so clean & very equipped. Loved the big table in the kitchen to sit around chatting and the doors out on to the patio area! Just a short 15 minutes walk down the hill into Arnside itself which we enjoyed a lovely walk around. We ate at the Albion pub- also lovely! Location fab! Have already booked to go back again in a couple of months."
"The house was warm and clean. It is ideal for a big group. There were eight of us with three generations and we all had plenty of space. There is a bathroom on each level which worked well. The kitchen is well equipped for home catering and the table is certainly big enough! However I would also recommend the fish and chip shop in Arnside but be warned the portions are very generous! The location is ideal for accessing a variety of walks, quite a few straight from the door."
"Our family stayed to celebrate my mother's 88th birthday. The house is lovely, full of character, warm and comfortable. The kitchen is well appointed and spacious and is combined with the dining area which makes it very sociable whilst preparing and serving food. The garden is beautiful has has great views to the estuary and the Lakeland fells beyond. There is great walking right out of the door in the local woods and a fine viewpoint from the top of the Knott. Also close to all the amenities in Arnside. So I would thoroughly recommend staying here."
"Had an amazing stay over for louises 50th at weekend 11 of us stayed..lots of everything ..we was short of nothing.. owner very helpful and accommodating.. didnt rush us on leaving day at all.. the showers were powerful ..had a few issues with hot water but sorted it out ..in all the house was amazing for a family/friend gathering and we are definitely going to book again for next year xx"
"6 year old daughter was very excited to be sleeping in the loft/playroom. However the morning after our arrival she woke covered in bites. When I checked her bed the sheets had mites crawling all over them. Contacted the owner who sent a text apologising & promising to order a new mattress to be delivered the following day. In the meantime we stripped bed, hot washed sheets, hoovered mattress & the carpet around bed. Daughter woke several times crying that night itching frantically. In the meantime the dish washer had stopped working so we contacted owner again. Maintenance man arrived to look at dishwasher but declared that he couldn't fix it as it was still under warranty. We mentioned my daughter's bites & he agreed the mattress needed to be incinerated & replaced. He said he would move a spare mattress from a bed in the lower floor up to the attic room. We returned from our day out to find that he had left the old infested mattress in the attic room alongside the spare one. So I had to carry it down 2 floors out into the garden ready for disposal. The mattress that had been moved from the lower floor twin was infact too heavy for the children's bed in the attic & as a result the slats kept collapsing underneath it. We contacted the owner who assured us that the new mattress had been ordered but, in the meantime, a Handyman would come the next day to fit a board on the slats to stop them collapsing. He clearly came while we were out as I returned to find my daughters clean bedding & cuddly toys stripped from the bed & thrown in a heap in the corner of the attic with the old broken grubby toys that are kept up there. The handyman had apparently lifted the mattress to take a look at the slats, dropped it back down (again collapsing the slats underneath) & left. As a result i spent the late afternoon rewashing bedding & fixing the bed slats (yet again) prior to giving my daughter antihistamine, smearing her with insect repellent & a cooling cream (yet again) to stop the itching from her bites. The new mattress that the owner had aledgedly ordered on day 1 failed to arrive until the day before we were due to leave. We found it dumped in the attic room against the wall still in its packaging - left for me to sort out. When I eventually got it on the bed it was far too small even though the owner had been given the correct measurements. When we contacted the owner to let her know we received a jovial text message saying "oh arent we are having trouble with this mattress?!" She may have found it funny, I certainly didn't after spending MY holiday repeatedly washing bedding, moving mattresses, fixing beds and medicating & calming my distressed child all because her house wasn't cleaned properly. The rest of the property was fine but the attic is dirty & stuffy filled with toys that have seen better days. The travel cot supplied that we needed for our 1 year old had also seen better days - it had holes in all 4 corners & no mattress at all!!! (So we had 2 uncomfortable children to cope with each night). Incidentally the dish washer that broke at the start of our stay wasn't due to be fixed until 4 days after our holiday had ended. Useful! (With 9 adults & 4 children). Very disappointed with how our issues were (or weren't) handled by the owner. Have complained to Sykes Cottages who tell me the owner doesn't really see what more she could have done, this is a business for her!! Well thanks for that - this is MY holiday, which I've paid her for. Not happy. Would never stay here again - you don't expect to find mites living in your child's bed when you go on holiday!"
"We have just enjoyed our 2nd wonderful family holiday at this amazing house! Our group consisted of 7 adults and 3 children under 5. The large and very well equipped kitchen meant that meals were easy to prepare and serve. Everything was very clean and in excellent condition. The patio doors opened out so we could enjoy meals outside on the verandah, as the weather was superb. The large garden was a particular delight for all of us - and the children in particular had great fun playing with the large range of toys from the summerhouse. They also loved all the toys in the loft bedroom. These were a real bonus and greatly appreciated! All the bedrooms were a good size with very comfortable beds. The whole house was very spacious, which meant we had plenty of room for our large group. The location is excellent, quiet with distant views. It's only a short walk to a lovely playground for the children, and then on down to Arnside promenade with shops, cafes etc. There are lovely walks on the doorstep including the stunning views from Arnside Knott. There are also plenty of attractions to enjoy a short drive away. All in all, we thoroughly recommend this house, and hope to return again!"
"We booked this place for a family getaway and with 9 adults and 2 children this house had everything that we required and more. With good size bedrooms and a king size main bedroom there was plenty space. Very large kitchen and dining area with a separate utility room. The house is situated in a very quiet area and has a garden that goes all the way around the house. Outside seating on a decking area and a summer house. This house was perfect in every way for a large group and everything was catered for. Parking for 4 cars and friendly neighbours what more can you ask for. FANTASTIC!"
"This is a great house for a large group. We stayed for a family holiday and it was a great place, with lots of space. The house is nice and warm and the hot water plentiful. It has a great kitchen diner for self catering and a good sized lounge. The master bedroom has fabulous views. The house is a short walk to Arnside and there are lots of great touristy things to do in the local area. Theres a great walk up to Arnside Knott with great views"
"Thornfield is a fabulous house for a large group which is well equipped and in a fantastic location. A proper home from home offering comfort and style. How often do you stay somewhere only to find the kitchen is just short of a pan or the knives are blunter than an irritable teenager? Not here. Sleeps 12, you can feed 12 and there is enough space to not feel cramped. We had smally children in the group who loved the attic room which was well stocked with books and games and even in February the garden looked lovely. The house is within a short walk of Arnside Knott, reached by climbing through woods, which gives great views of the area and a reasonable stroll takes you downhill to the town and promenade. Arnside is only 40 or so minutes from Windermere and Ambleside giving easy access to the southern lakes and fells which in an unseasonably dry and sunny February week meant a great place to stay was topped off by fantastic walks. The owners responded quickly to a query we had about internet and wifi (we are all teenagers at heart these days) and nothing seemed to be too much trouble. Thank you. Would happily return, in fact we didn't want to leave."
"A very warm and welcoming house. Central heating is super efficient so a very cosy stay too. Booked the house for New Year for 11 family members and we couldn't have had more fun! Claire had put up Christmas trees in the kitchen and living room so everything looked very festive. Beds were super comfortable so we all slept well too. The kitchen was really well equipped and we often sat at the huge table just chatting. Would definitely recommend to a friend."
"Located in a quiet filmed sac surrounded by other houses, has a wrap round garden which is well maintained. Tree swing rope, pond, various sitting areas, summerhouse a hit with the younger members of the family. Outdoor playing games also in the summerhouse to use. There was ten of us in the party including a dog. House even when fully occupied wouldn't be cramped. Very spacious, rooms huge . Cleaned and maintained to a decent standard. Parking for four vehicles. Great place to play hide and seek in on a wet day! Decent equipment provided and furnishings. Downstairs smelt foisty and after having a shower in the downstairs shower room floor was full of condensation and wet. Shame as such a lovely house don't want damp to develop in the long run as a result of this. Good location"
"Location is good for walks with short walk to village. Good pub near by and fabulous fish and chips on front of promenade Good for touring with a lovely garden for barbacues and child friendly, the grandchilden had a great time exploring the garden."
"The house is absolutely beautiful. It has both character and all the modern facilities that one would need, particularly for a large group. There were enough bathrooms and toilets and all 9 male guests were able to sleep in a separate bed. The decked patio is great for sitting outside and the big dining table was perfect for cards as well as eating and drinking. Great little BBQ area too with all the equipment you need. In 8 years our walking group has never gone back to any house we have rented but this one might be the exception!"
"We have just returned home after a family holiday at Thornfield. The house is excellent in every way, spacious, spotlessly clean, well-equipped, comfortable and just right for our party of 7 adults & 3 children under 4 years of age. The large garden is lovely with plenty of space for games, bbq etc. The children loved the attic bedroom with all the toys. There is plenty to do in the area, with beautiful walks on the doorstep. We had a fantastic time and can't wait to return!"
"Booked this house for my Dad's 80th Birthday so the family (11 of use) could get together and celebrate. This house was perfect, fully equipt with everything you need and plenty of room for everyone with a fabulous big kitchen and relaxed living room with log burner. The house was spotlessly clean and very well decorated throughout. My little niece particularly enjoyed the loft space where there was lots of toys for her to enjoy and my sister loved relaxing in the roll top bath. Unfortunately could not enjoy the lovely garden and patio area as the weather was a little wet! All in all a very relaxing and enjoyable long weekend, would love to book this house again. Thank you."
"Just returned from our second visit to Thornfield Cottage. We stayed with 2 other families all with 2 children each. Loads of space for the kids and they love the play room. The Cottage has everything you need for a comfortable stay with a couple of families. We love the big table wehere we can all sit and eat at the same time. To be honest we don't normally use the lounge until the kids have gone to bed and then we light the fire and chill out. The walk to Arnside knot can be approached from different directions. We have small children but you can make it as short or as long a walk as you want it to be. The local spar is within walking distance and also the local pub the Albion where we had a lovely Sunday Lunch after walking to the beach. Always nice to round off with locally made ice cream and a photo on the pier. Can't wait until our return next year."
"Amazing, amazing, amazing. Just back from a fantastic weekend at this lovely house. It is our second time here and we will be back again next year. We are a group of three young families, the house is perfect for a relaxed chilled weekend of walking, playing boardgames, family fun and maybe a glass of wine or two. The house is amplesize for all twelve (without getting in each other's way). It has superb facilities and the well stocked kitchen makes cooking breakfast and meals easy. Set in a stunning location with a beautiful garden -I would recommend. We have lots of fond memories in this house and look forward to making more next year "
"Thornfield exceeded our expectations. The photos don't do it justice! From the moment the 11 of us arrived it was clear that this was a spotlessly clean, fully equipped, nicely decorated house with lots of space so that we could all choose to be together, of have some quiet time away in another room if we fancied. The cosy lounge, spacious kitchen and tasteful master bedroom were the main bits that stood out, together with the lovely gardens and surrounding countryside. A short walk away there are some lovely walks, shops, coffee bars & The Albion pub which serves excellent food. We will certainly be back!"
"Just back from a long weekend staying here with our family. Excellent accommodation, very clean and tidy. The house is beautiful and the location was great to be able to walk into Arnside. Every chance we will return for another visit!"
"Just back from staying a week at this beautifully presented house. We were 6 adults and 6 kids under 5. Lots of space and lovely garden for playing / BBQing in. My 2 kids (3&4) had a blast staying in the attic bedroom which had lots of toys for them to play with. Short stroll to Arnside Knott with spectacular views across the bay/countryside. 15 mins walk to pub and tasty pie shop (The Bakehouse) and plenty to do for all in surrounding area - something tells me we may be back! "
"As a group of ten friends who meet up once a year (5 couples and a well behaved dog). We stayed for a long weekend, some the extended week minus kids. We had a brilliant time, the weather was wonderful and we managed to eat alfresco a few times. However even if the weather hadn't have been on our side the house had a wonderfully large dining table which was well used as well as the goldfish bowl sized wine glasses by us ladies. Tetley, our dog, particularly enjoyed the beautiful garden and chased his ball and the odd peasant around. Non of the couples disagreed about the six bedrooms. With three bathrooms we never waited long. There are great walks in a wonderful part of the world, fablocal pubs and friendly locals. Claire the owner was super helpful before we arrived and the box of books, maps and blue bible was used extensively! As the previous comments made, visitors to Thornfield will not be disappointed, 5 stars all the way and all of us would come back again."
"As a group of nine we stayed her for a long weekend and had a wonderful time. The large kitchen and dining room were a big hit , the kitchen is well equipped with decent sized glasses (we had the odd drink) large fridge and ice-maker. The sitting room has lovely views over the garden and the estuary and is a nice place to relax. The bedrooms and bathrooms were very well appointed. The master bedroom is really impressive. The nearest pub (The Albion) is 0.7 miles away, serves well-kept beer and a good Sunday lunch. Visitors to Thornfield will not be disappointed. Recommended."
"We've just returned home after a weekend away at this property, there was ten of us staying in the house and you certainly didn't feel like you were tripping over each other, it was very spacious, lovely decor & great facilities inside and out. The property is perfectly situated on beautiful grounds with lovely landscaped gardens and patio area. It was a wonderful place to stay, it was like a home from home and had everything we needed. Arnside is a quiet village with beautiful walks and scenery which we got to explore due to organising a treasure hunt with Door 2 Door adventures, we would certainly recommend them. We would not hesitate to book this accommodation again and recommend it to friends and family. Good communication with the owner. Anyone staying at this property will not be disappointed."
"This accommodation is superb. We were 9 adults (couples and singles) looking for a place to stay that wasn't too cramped and Thornfield delivered. The property is spacious, has an amazing garden and a generally lovely atmosphere. We arrived to the huge dining table set for dinner and spent most of our time there cooking in the huge, well equipped kitchen, enjoying log fires and wishing it wasn't raining so we could enjoy the spacious decking. The living room was cosy and comfortable and we enjoyed an evening chatting around another log burning fire. The house was spotlessly clean on arrival and full of nice touches that made our stay all the more special. The huge selection of glasses and the ice machine were big hits. There is plenty to do in the surrounding area and some lovely shops and pubs in the village. This place is a real gem and we would certainly come back to stay again."
