One of the gems of the East Coast is the lovely Runswick Bay. With its narrow cobbled streets and quaint cottages, this picturesque old fishing village nestles in a small bay just nine miles from Whitby. Backed by spectacular cliffs and moorland scenery, this is not a typical tourist spot; cars have restricted access to the village which makes it an ideal place to relax and unwind without the sights and sounds of the modern world. Reached via cobbled, twisting alleyways, visitors can enjoy the lovely sandy beach - well known for fossil hunting - and various cliff-top walks including the Cleveland Way. Local amenities within Runswick Bay are plentiful and include three local inns, all serving food, and one tea-room. A village shop is provided by nearby Hinderwell.
Reviews
"My son and I had a lovely holiday here. We were both impressed by the apartment. It was beautifully maintained and furnished, with every convenience provided. We would recommend it to others, and would rent it again if we were staying in the area. We would not recommend the Runswick Bay hotel for food."
"As soon as we walked through the door, there was a warm, friendly atmosphere. There was an inviting welcome pack and it was great for all the family. Everything was well furnished including the cupboards and storage spaces. The walk down to Runswick Bay was absolutely fine and felt good to find fossils. The apartment is a great base for touring around North Yorkshire. Whitby is really lovely, with lots of interesting shops and places to see. The 199 steps lead up to Whitby Abbey and there are lovely views of Whitby and the coastline. The coastal walk was delightful too. Robin's Hood Bay had lots of fossils to find and the whole place was really fascinating. The walk to Runswick bay is steep but absolutely fine and worthwhile. The apartment and the whole area us very relaxing. It was lovely to listen to the birds singing and to sit out in the garden on a sunny day. The beds are really comfortable and the reclining sofas were a pleasant surprise. "
"We had a lovely week .... would definitely stay again. We booked Apartment 1 Runswick Bay Lodge at very late notice as a last minute school break holiday. We really fancied the Whitby area after a day out there when staying on a "too touristy" Scarborough break last year. The cost of the apartment was fantastic compared to the others on Sykes Cottages and other sites, and there was a concern that it would not be up to scratch, but the reviews were good and the area looked lovely, so we booked it. We shouldn't have been concerned !! Our hosts were quick to contact us after booking to ensure we had full information. On arriving at the apartment, we were very pleasantly surprised on booking last minute. The block of 4 apartments has spacious parking and a welcoming feel. On entering the apartment, everything felt clean and spacious. The decor was modern and bright, and the apartment clean and well maintained. However it was the welcome pack that made the first real difference. We've stayed in many rentals with welcome packs consisting of milk, bread and eggs, but we loved that our hosts made it much more fun ......... laid out on the dining table we had a first night treat of a bottle of wine, chocolate biscuits, chips n dips and haribo sweets for our kids. We totally loved the welcome, thank you :-) After that we found the apartment to be well equipped, with all you could really need ...... washing machine, well equipped kitchen (with all tools needed), games, books, excellent storage space and comfortable living area. The beds were really comfortable and we slept well. The living room had several reclining sofas which made evening TV watching very comfortable (one very minor one to watch .... when cleaning you may need to recline the sofa's so that you can clean underneath). The walk down to Runswick Bay itself is steep and pretty scary (even worse coming back up !!!!) but is worth it. Not much there but very wild and very beautiful. Within walking distance is the fantastic Runswick Bay Hotel where we were made to feel very welcome for a drink and a game of darts every night. Walking back to the apartment, we did nothing but discuss the beautiful clear night skies and stars. All in all we loved this apartment and area and we will be back for sure :-) Thank you."
