Situated in beautiful countryside on the Staffordshire Moorlands the charming Peak village of Longnor is located close to both the River Dove and the River Manifold. This tranquil little settlement makes an excellent touring centre and boasts several shops, a post office, tea shop, craft centre and a beautiful church. The market square itself is cobbled and a scale of charges is still posted on a board outside the market hall, adding to the old-world charm of the place. Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall and the Spa town of Buxton are all within easy driving distance, as is the attractive market town of Bakewell and the ever popular Alton Towers theme park.
Reviews
"We arrived to a personal welcome from the owners of Duncrest. which is not always the case as keys are often in small wall safes, We were shown around the property and felt at home from the start. Thank you Lynne and George for your welcome and also the wine! There was everything in the cottage that would facilitate all self-catering requirements. The area is beautiful, even with the rain and windy weather that experienced most of the week. Visits to Buxton and Leek were made and as expected at this time of year,, very Christmasy! Would recommend the area and cottage, we hope to return in 2016."
"This is our third visit to Duncrest and we are never disappointed. The cottage is in a private courtyard belonging to the owners and is just a few steps from the heart of the village. The cottage is comfortable and well equipped and has everything you need for your stay. Both bedrooms have plenty of storage space and the beds are just so comfortable. There is central heating throughout and a log fire (although we did not need to use it this time). The kitchen is more than adequate and there is plenty of pots and pans if you want to cook rather than go out. Longnor it self is a sleepy village although you can see that a hundred years ago it would have been a bustling place. The village has the main facilities you need such as a general store, post office, a tea shop, and a craft and coffee centre. There is a fantastic fish and shop, as well as two pubs. Longnor is a great location for touring this part of the peak district with Buxton and Bakewell close by as well as Chatsworth and other great tourist attractions. The walking/cycle trails of Monsal, Manifold Way, Tissington and High Peak are just a few miles away. There are also many other fine walks to do. We feel completely at home at Duncrest and it meets our needs perfectly. The owners are fantastic and only too willing to help or provide suggestions where to go or walks to do etc. This is really home from home and we will return."
"This was a very homely, lovely cottage for a really relaxing holiday. The owners, Lynn and George and Charlie their dog were most helpful and attentive to our needs. They provided a bottle of wine for our arrival. The cottage was very well appointed with everything we needed. The cottage's location was also great for touring and visiting Buxton, Matlock and Bakewell. Crich Tram Museum was not too far away. Just down the road was a fantastic book shop covering all subjects at reasonable prices."
"Really comfortable and cosy cottage well within reach of places of interest - north and south. Longnor is a lovely friendly village. Great fish and chip shop. Only small complaint - the folding chairs in kitchen."
"The property: Arriving at Duncrest feels more like arriving at a friend's home than a holiday cottage. Everything we needed was provided, including a fully-equipped kitchen, WiFi and a washing machine and drying rack (which came in very handy after muddy walks). What made it truly special were the extra comforts - a lovely fireplace, hot water bottles (although the cottage is already well heated), a bottle of wine, chocolates and (as we stayed over the Christmas week) a fully decorated Christmas tree, plus a box of mince pies and a little gift for us! There is ample entertainment, with freeview TV, a DVD player, books, a jigsaw puzzle and board games provided. Service: We found the service to exceed all expectations. The owners (Lynne and George) were not only friendly and approachable, but they went to great lengths to help us throughout our trip. Examples of this include picking us up from the Buxton rail station on our arrival, making calls to check the bus timetables for us, helping us receive our delivery of groceries before we arrived and even storing away our food for us in the kitchen. Location: Duncrest is a 1-2 minute walk away from the village's market place, where there is a general store and a couple of pubs and cafes. It is helpful to have a car, but we were able to travel around easily by bus. There is a bus service (the High Peak service no. 442) that will take you through the lovely countryside to nearby towns (Buxton and Ashbourne) - it is infrequent but punctual and High Peak provides timetables online. Longnor is a small but well placed village in the Peak District and we were able to set off from here for leisurely countryside walks and more adventurous hikes up Chrome Hill and Parkhouse Hill. We cannot recommend Duncrest enough - it is perfect for anyone in small groups / families on holiday in the Peak District, especially those looking for a quiet and scenic place to stay, instead of a busier town. There is nothing to disappoint!"
"We stayed at this gorgeous cottage in august 2013. It has high quality fixtures and fittings. There were lots of lovely fluffy towels, beautiful bedding and beds that you didn't want to get out of. The owners, Lynne and George were extremely helpful and very friendly as were all close by. Longnor is a quaint friendly village with lots of walks. Buxton, Bakewell and Leek are not many miles away and well worth an explore. Loads to do, loads to see or just sit in the conservatory and look over the hills. Perfect."

"I was impressed from the start with this holiday cottage. There was a very friendly welcome from the owners and it was clear from the introductory tour that they take care of the property. The location was very peaceful but within short distances of places of interest. I would recommend Buxton for a day out,a beautiful town with a great farmers market. The peace and quiet at night at the cottage was brilliant and you can sit and watch the stars from the conservatory. Our weather also made the holiday more memorable with sunshine for the whole week. I will certainly return to this area and would recommend it as a holiday destination."
"Immaculate pristine cottage in an outstanding area friendly hosts short walk to pub or chip shop also paper shop very convenient"
"Longnor is a unique little village. Parts of it resemble the set of some Victorian drama. Duncrest cottage is set close to the village centre. It is very well appointed, cosy and comfortable. Attention has been given to detail by the welcoming owners and nothing has been spared to ensure that visitors want for nothing."
"was there. excellently fitted and equiped, nothing was overlooked, splendid stay, friendly on site owners, plenty of local bus journeys available."
"Warm welcome on arrival. Very clean and well equipt. Lovely base and easy availability to the Peak District, Bakewell, Buxton and Chatesworth House, also lovely areaa for walking."
"We loved the cottage, especially the sun room on the front! It was very well equipped with everything you could possibly need. The location was great, within easy reach of all the places we wanted to visit. The local amenities were very adequate. George and Lynn were brilliant hosts and very friendly and helpfull. We were quite lucky with the weather and organised our days to suit, i.e. on a rainy day we travelled into Derby to do some shopping, coolish days we saved for walking and sunny days for exploring town,s and villages we wanted to see. There was nothing about the holiday to dislike, except for departure day. Was a fantastic break in a fantastic cottage with great views to boot."
"The cottage was beautiful. The owners were very helpful and friendly leaving milk, biscuits and even a bottle of wine. We walked in and felt immediately at home. We made really good use of the conservatory on the front each day when we came back from our travels. The location was great for visiting the Peak District area. The local ammenities were all we needed."
