Set on the north-west of the famous Isle of Skye, the village of Dunvegan is a quirky mixture of traditional stone dwellings and modern houses. With a wide selection of shops and hotels, Dunvegan is only a mile from the thirteenth century castle home of the Clan Macleod – who are said to have had dealings with the "wee folk" at the Fairy Bridge. Also in the area - with fantastic rock forms and pinnacles - are the Cuillin Mountains, which many climbers consider some of the best in the country. The Aros Centre provides a wide variety of concerts, theatre and cinema throughout the year and is well worth a visit, whilst Portree, the island's only town boasts and excellent range of shops, restaurants and hotels, as well as a picturesque natural harbour.
Reviews
"The property was visibly mouldy, with damp patches and smelly to the extent that it made me feel chesty, despite not having any pre-existing respiratory problems, so definitely avoid this if you have asthma, or just prefer not to smell like you have been kept in the loft for a year! It was so bad that I left half way through the week and returned home. A complete waste of my time and money, especially as it was a 26 hour round trip by car. When I complained to Sykes Cottages (prior to leaving) they were incredibly unhelpful and told me that I should just leave and go home if I was not satisfied. They refused to send anyone to look at the issues, refused to offer alternative accommodation and refused compensation. Completely useless customer service and I would never, ever book with them again."
"Contrary to the description of a rural retreat, whilst remote, the property is adjacent to a slipway and active boat yard belonging to the fish farm, so there are tractors and cars arriving in the mornings seven days a week and fish food crates create a background smell. The cottage does have good views of the Loch and whilst a little tired we very much enjoyed watching the seals and were lucky enough to see an otter in front of the Boathouse. The surrounding landscape is fabulous and we enjoyed our stay. We asked before we went if there was a baking tray as we brought a leg of lamb to cook and there were no trays which would fit in the oven. There were other niggles but we always travel with supplies and nothing was insurmountable. If you are out and about each day, it may be ideal, the stove made it cosy and there was plenty of wood and coal supplied."
"Lovely spot, very relaxing with no internet or phone signal. Magic"
