The Hills are a nationally important landscape and were designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in recognition of the special qualities of its natural and built environment. Being relatively unspoilt, the Hills offer a rare sense of timelessness. A network of hedges, mature hedgerow trees and small copses link a rich mosaic of semi-natural habitats. The area is perfect for walks, cycling and horse riding where the quiet bridleways and byways offer many opportunities to explore and enjoy the locally distinctive buildings, archaeological remains and natural flora and fauna. Sheldon is centrally located to explore attractions further away, such as the City of Exeter with its ancient Cathedral, High Street shopping and arts centres. Historic Honiton is also nearby, giving you a chance to find out more about the honey exports that gave the town its name and, a few miles south, you'll find the unspoilt beaches of Exmouth and the rest of the Jurassic Coast.
Reviews
"Nothing it is out in the wilderness. To get to the Cabin you have to walk along a gravel path, up some gravel steeps for about 50 yds then to enter the Shed there are wooden steps with NO hand rail,"very dangerous". Inside it has to be seen to be believe Divided into 3 rooms. Bedroom with no wardrobe. Bathroom" wash basin" so small only fit for washing hands.Kitchen come living area Small picnic table with two fold up chairs. This property is an absolute disaster as we are used to staying in Lodges in various destinations. We decided to leave tried to contact the owner without success, contacted "Sykes Cottages" for help but not very helpful . We ended up staying at a Travel Lodge for the night The owner has refused to refund our money which is a disgrace. This is our holiday money lost under false pretences"
"Very enjoyable few days spent here. Clean ,, warm , well appointed and a wonderful setting. The owners have put a lot of love and attention into this property and the area itself and deserve much praise for their efforts. We came seeking peace and quiet and got it. Would certainly return."
"We've just come back from 7 nights stay at this lovely lodge, it has all the amenities you need to comfortably stay for your desired break, the view from the lodge over the lake is amazing and there is plenty of wildlife to see, we were privileged to see the elusive Kingfisher whilst there as well as several Hawks, Yellow Wagtails, Dragon Flies, a Mole which was lost by the roadside... lol and parachutists from nearby Dunkerswell and an air display from the stunt plane, oh and plenty of Trout who live in the lake. There are plenty of places to visit and the lodge is conveniently located within only a few miles of either the M5 or A303. If you happen to belong to the National Trust you will find Killerton House about 7 miles down the road, and also Knightshayes, Barrington Court and Monticute House all within an hours drive. There is also Quad biking, horse riding, a gliding school, the Landrover experience and plenty of walks to experience if you like. To gain access to the lodge you will need to drive down a small lane with a few limited passing points, we stayed there 7 nights and only encountered one vehicle coming the other way. There is no parking next to this lodge but there is a small car park very close to it, it wasn't a problem for us but do expect to make a couple of trips with your luggage. There is no mobile phone coverage at the lodge, we were aware of this when we booked and had no problem with it, in fact it was a huge bonus and we were able to relax fully and really feel free from the outside world. If you really can't live without your mobile constantly going off every five seconds then this location is not for you :-), of course if you need your fix, then you only need to drive a few miles up the road and you're back in the real world.... lol"
