Reviews
"I booked Burnside Cottage as a rural retreat for me and my partner when visiting family in Edinburgh and exploring the local area. On arrival it looked lovely, but it soon started to disappoint. Our dog found some glucose shots including needles in the front room... Luckily we got them off him before he swallowed them or that would have been catastrophic. The accommodation didn't seem very clean, bedding and towels were fine but the shower curtain was mouldy and the the rug in the living room covered in hair. We identified why that was when looking at the hoover, it clearly hadn't been emptied in some time and we had to empty it before using it which took some effort considering how full it was. The walk down the end of the cottages was not as picturesque as we hoped, our initial walk highlighted it was overgrown grass up to waist height in parts which considering the Scottish weather soaked us through. This was the only really available section to walk the dog immediately from the cottage as well so was a big disappointment. The advert highlighted that there would be some road noise, it seems it's a little understatement, the road outside is in poor condition and busy all night and the bedroom is on the front so it is quite distracting when trying to sleep, you certainly couldn't open a window to cool down. To be positive, the cottage is reasonably well placed, it was quick to get in to Edinburgh and to places such as Cramond beach and Beecraig country park. There is a new estate not far away which has a sainsburys local, a pharmacy and a dominos which was useful to have about. Turn left out the cottage and follow the same road until you pass a petrol station, the shops are about 0.5 mile on from that."
"Had a lovely week at burnside cottage nice and comfortable. When you have been out for the day it was nice to come back to a warm cottage. We will certainly be staying there again."
"My husband and I spent a week there and it's in a great location (albeit next to a busy 'B' road, but you do get used to the road noise) only 3 miles from Linlithgow (where there are some lovely pubs for meals if you don't want to cook yourself.). Within easy reach of the Park and Ride at Ingliston where you can catch the tram into Edinburgh. Also great road links being minutes away from the motorway. However our downside to our stay was we were greeted upon opening the door to the smell of wood from the previous visitors who had used the open fire to burn logs. It was something that lingered all our visit and made your clothes smell. Might not bother other people but it did us. The garden could do with some attention as we had to negotiate the overgrown rose bushes by the front door to reach the bins at the bottom of the garden. I did receive an email upon arrival from the owner (yes there is free wifi at the cottage) to say the gate had just broken and she'd be having it fixed when we'd left but I did wonder by the state of it if it had been like that a long while. If we had any problems then we had to phone her, but she was in Ireland so it could have been an expensive call if we had to. Thankfully we didn't. Items of cleaning cloth and rubber gloves were left behind the toilet and they smelt so we had to move them while we were there as it wasn't pleasant. They could do with a proper wardrobe, admittedly there was plenty of drawer space but there was only a small rail to hang anything up and only a few hangers. On the plus side the kitchen was lovely and everything was new couldn't fault anything there. Generally cleanliness was very good though the rug in the lounge could have done with a better hoover before we arrived as there seemed to be plenty of dog hairs still around, and there is a hoover so I did use it during our stay. We did enjoy watching the birds coming to a feeder outside the kitchen window. It was worth what we paid for it for the week, however I wouldn't want to be paying more during the summer. I have stayed in better for less."
