Wallingford has a history dating back to King Alfred and it was at Wallingford that William the Conqueror crossed the Thames with his army, before marching on London. Wallingford Castle was built at his command to cement it's royal importance, and during its lifetime has played host to many royal visitors including King John, Henry Vl and Edward the Black Prince, to name but a few. Unfortunately, what remains of it now is only impressive earth works but some of the stones were re-used to build the St Mary-le-More Church which can be found near the centre of the town.
Reviews
"wallingford is a quirky little town which is nice to have walk around (no need to take the car as its on your doorstep) the dolphin pub is quite nice and if you eat in there, you will not walk out hungry! as said the river is at the bottom of a well maintained garden, which is handy as my husband is an avid angler. i know there has been issues with the heating/boiler, this has now been resolved as a new one has been installed, there has also been areas of redecoration and skylight cleansing also the baths have been re-sealed which tell me former complaints have been listened to and attended to! we'll be back again...as often as possible!"
"In 22 years of weekends away twice a year this stay is the worst that we have experienced. It was exceptionally cold with inadequate heating. Even with cold weather one would expect to be as warm as at home! The owner stated that we should have filled in an issues review form. We did but it disappeared after we left. There were lots of cobwebs in the skylight, one double bed had paper, dust and dirt underneath. The patio doors are old, rusty and dirty around the tracks. This property is resting on its location laurels. The location is excellent but that's it. Worst of all I have been made to feel a liar. I would not recommend this property or Sykes Cottages"
"Excellent location, rural but the convenience of a small market town in your backyard. As the say "a house is all about location" well this is house really beautifull located. House is self shows it self very well on pictures. But quality in real time is a bit different. Bit damp, everything is painted white but badly done, finishing in the house is poor. Enough square footage to live in comfort. But all in all good do with not a little tlc but a lot of tlc.(roof/drainpipe especialy) Very nice lawn, decking, beautiful location for a big garden party. Parking your car is possible, there is a kind of garage without a roof (Of road parking) but not with the easiest entry . The lacking of a roof and the big tree that covers the parking space your car looks terrible after a night being parked there. So all in all, a mixed picture. We paid the top fee because of the season, for that amount of money the quality could be a bit better. Thats the reason for the three stars, in the low season the value for money balance is a bit better. Last thing washing machine only 3 kg, and no tumble dryer."
"We booked to stay at the house for the end of the fishing season. Accommodation is well appointed with wonderful views and access to a good section of the Thames. There are 4 bedrooms, each of which sleep 2 people and a couple of bathrooms. House has everything you could need for a holiday. Only slight downside was the heating, which took a bit of working out. All in all, one of the better holiday lets we have used on the Thames, close to the village but far enough away to be able to enjoy peace and quiet. Only drawback was the parking, there are spaces for 2 cars only. Nevertheless, we were suitably impressed that we have booked the same house for next March already."
