"As soon as we arrived at The Engine Room, We were impressed by the light-filled, spacious and comfortable rooms. There is every facility you need for a lovely break from everyday routine. We spent happy hours at the nearby coast and Sledmere House - literally across the road, has lovely gardens, shops and cafe. You will not be disappointed. I am sure we will be back! Thanks Catherine "
"How can I even begin to describe what a wonderful time we had at the Engine Room?? From the minute we arrived it felt like home, it's the tiniest things that make such a huge difference! The games, the DVDs, the torch for late night or early morning dog walks! Everything was thought of and it was fantastic! Catherine has been an absolute pleasure to deal with and has kept in contact on a regular basis, nothing has been too much trouble. The cottage was spotless on arrival with beautiful bedding and sumptuous bath robes and towels. We didn't even have to bring our own high chair or travel cot which was a huge bonus when both cars were absolutely overflowing already ??? I couldn't rate The Engine Room any higher and would recommend to everyone. Our 3 children 16 month old, 4 year old and 7 year old had the best time and were convinced that the 3 sheep in the field came to see them on a regular basis and would wait for them! Our 83 year old Nana also came and had the most relaxing time! Thank you so so much for everything and for helping us create magical memories that will last a life time! We CANNOT wait to come back! P.s our children have insisted that we now purchase bean bags as they loved them that much!!!"
"We were so happy to return to this lovely house, a home from home with a feeling of space and luxury throughout, yet friendly, cosy and welcoming. Each double bedroom has a spacious well-appointed bathroom so that there were no queues for the showers. Even though the December weather was not particularly kind to us, we were cosy and warm all weekend and we appreciated the soft towelling dressing gowns provided. We enjoyed a walk in the spectacular grounds of Sledmere house which are right across the road from the Engine Room, we shopped in their farm shop and Christmas shop, and we walked along the expansive beach towards Filey. I'm already looking forward to returning again soon."
"Just back from a return visit to Engine Room Cottage and once again it exceeded expectation! The open plan lounge/kitchen area makes the cottage very sociable (there's an extra fridge for wine if needed!), the kitchen is really well equipped and the sofa's are really comfortable. Slept really well, the beds are very snugly, and it's great to have 3 bathrooms. A bedroom downstairs proved very handy too! The village has a very welcoming pub serving delicious food and there's Sledmere House and gardens on the doorstep if you fancy a local walk and visit to the cafe, farm shop and gift shop (entry free courtesy of membership card that comes with the cottage). Lots of other local walks and only a short drive to some amazing beaches and seaside towns. Couldn't ask for more, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will definitely be back."
"The cottage is perfectly set up for a family, more than one family or group of friends. The bedrooms are generously sized, all with en-suite! It is obviously much cared for with every detail thought of. The owner has ensured personal touches that add to the very homely environment. This was my second visit and every much as enjoyable as my first. Will definitely be back."
""When we pay attention to detail, the big picture will take care of itself." George St-Pierre. This former fire station ignites a spark as soon as you step through the door. It's been lovingly renovated into the most fabulous cottage. An intoxicating mix of old and new have been artfully combined to create luxury, warmth and comfort. The three things I look for when I go on holiday. I went on a trip back in time with my mum, to visit the world famous Yorkshire coast, and Sledmere in the Yorkshire Wolds was the perfect location. We set off on a daily basis for places like Filey, Scarborough and Bridlington to take in the seaside air, walking on the cliff tops and sandy beaches. We sampled mouth-watering food in the villages of Driffield and Malton, and got back each evening to unwind in our lovely cottage with breath taking views of the rolling green hills. If I'm honest it is the attention to detail in the cottage that thrilled me the most. Catherine, the owner, has thought of everything. Favourites were the comfy beds, the pillow menu, the fluffy bathrobes, the twinkling red lights, the large sofas, the TV with Freeview, the books, the DVDs and the all important Wi-Fi. We intend to return in the summer to sit on the patio and watch the sun set in this quiet and pretty rural village. Thank you Catherine for some great memories . "To Travel is To Live." "Me and my five children had the most amazing time staying here, the cottage was clean, comfortable and spacious. There was everything you'd need to be relaxed, Catherine really has done a terrific job in making it feel like home away from home. We will definitely be returning. Highly recommend."
"We could not have asked for a nicer or more comfortable place! The Engine Room Cottage is a real home away from home; it is tastefully and comfortably furnished, spacious and very well equipped. We had the most wonderful stay and would recommend it without reserve. It was a great place for us to have our two pups, as the garden is enclosed and perfect area for them to play and stare at all the sheep! It is easily one of the most lovely places we have stayed at! Stunning views and comfortable seating inside and out! Catherine was so helpful and accommodating, welcoming us with a celebratory champers! This was the perfect place for all my family and friends to share special memories together and with us during our Wedding week at Sledmere! Thank you, we will definitely be back!"
"A fabulous week in a lovely cottage that is part of the old fire station in the picturesque village of Sledmere. The amenities of the cottage were second to none and the one problem we had was resolved within a few hours by the owner. There are lots of places to visit and seaside towns are a short drive away. Thoroughly recommended and we hope we can return in the near future."
"Lovely spacious accommodation, everything you need. Lots to see & do. We visited York & Filey. Beautiful part of Yorkshire. We especially loved watching the lambs & their newborns whilst relaxing with a glass of wine complete with plenty of sunshine. If you want a peaceful relaxing stay you have found the perfect place. We hope to stay again in the near future. Thank you."
"Just back and I am delighted with the Engine Room . Beautiful outlook. Cleanliness excellent. Very well equipped. A great place to relax"
"I spent my birthday weekend at The Engine Room with a group of friends. The place is converted tastefully, is very well equipped and the host is very accommodating. We arrived to find biscuits, cake, wine and lovely fluffy bathrobes for each of us. We immediately settled into the cosy cottage and everyone loved their ensuite bedrooms each full of light and very well maintained. Sledmere itself is a lovely village. Lots of walking routes and a trip to Sledmere Hall and Gardens is a must. Everyone is so friendly and the local pub is great. We spent one morning in Malton (25 mins drive), which is definitely worth a drive for a wander around. York is about 40 mins away in the direction of Manchester so we stopped off there on the way back. All in all a really good spot from which to explore with high quality accommodation which has absolutely everything you could need. Including a full Mad Men box set! Highly recommended."
"There was a really welcoming feel as we came into the huge open plan kitchen, dining and living area and although it was cold outside the house was cosy throughout our stay. The kitchen is exceptionally well-equipped and there is attention to detail everywhere with nice touches such as the provision of fluffy white bath robes. We ate at the excellent Triton Inn in the village on the first day and we liked it so much we returned again the next day. We stayed three nights and visited the Sledmere Christmas craft and food fair five minutes walk away, and the Malton Christmas fair the next day, a short drive away. It was very quiet in the cottage and I especially liked waking to the view of green fields with grazing sheep at the back. It is only a short drive to the coast so we will definitely return again to explore the cliffs, coves and beaches of the region."
"The Engine Room is a beautifully converted fire station, with memorabilia discretely placed. It is immaculately kept, with a very well thought out open plan living room, a very well equipped kitchen and (unlike other similar accommodation) has 3 bath/shower rooms alongside 3 good sized bedrooms. It is a stone's throw away from Sledmere House and its surrounding gardens and farm shop. The village itself is delightful with a very nice pub (The Triton). A short drive away is the market town of Malton, ample walks for the fit and not-so-fit. I could not recommend ER highly enough."
"Have just returned from a fabulous stay at The Engine Room Cottage, the cottage itself is faultless, everything a guest would need is catered for by the owners and the place is spotlessy clean and beautifully decorated. We will be returning next year as want to explore North Yorkshire a bit more, a wet day in York and a windy day in Scarborough was all we fitted in, however even the weather couldn't dampen our spirits."
"The engine room cottage is a lovely specious and well equipped. With 3 generous bedrooms 2 with ensuite spotless clean a large open plan living area with a kitchen that wanted for nothing. The whole cottage had a cosy comfortable atmosphere and the surrounding countryside was a added bonus I will certainly miss the view from my bedroom window definitely. It is also a great base to visit the many attractions Scarborough, Bridlington, York etc also I would recommend a visit to the beautiful sledmere house and grounds and a cheeky drink or two in the triton pub 10 minutes walk up the road. I would highly recommend this cottage and Catherine the owner will definitely consider coming back soon."
"A stylish, comfortable, converted fire engine shed! Located in the gentile private Estate of Sledmere with the grand house, extensive grounds and lovely farm shop and cafe just a 10 minute walk around the corner. Not forgetting the very traditional Triton Inn (strap line "unspoilt by progress!") in easy reach and definitely worth a visit, excellent gin & tonics! The cottage is one of four, quite close together but not overlooking each other. The views from the back over rolling fields with gambolling lambs make up for the lack of outside space - there is a patio area with table and sunshade. On arrival there was a bottle of wine which was a lovely touch and the owner Catherine had been in touch the day before to wish us a good trip. The cottage was very clean and tidy with a nice open plan space downstairs which makes this a great place for a family or group get together and can accommodate six with plenty of room. The kitchen is very well equipped with good quality items and even a slow cooker. The upstairs ensuite bedrooms are large, light and have. comfortable beds. Lots of hanging space, bathrobes, a TV in two bedrooms and hairdryers provided. A chest of drawers and a full length mirror would be welcome additions to the bedrooms. We really enjoyed our week and felt very at home. I can certainly recommend this cottage and would visit again."
"We arrived to a group of cottages that were clearly sign posted, ample parking and a welcome gift of snacks and wine, always a winner with us. The cottage itself was huge with open kitchen, diner and lounge, 3 bedrooms, 2 of which had ensuite bathrooms with the 3rd haveing a bathroom opposite. The kitchen was quite honestly better equipped than mine at home. It is located in Sledmere, about 15 minutes from Driffield and 45 minutes from York. You can get to Bridlington pretty handy if you fancy a boat trip and there is plenty of countryside if you fancy a stroll. If you are looking for somewhere to stay in the area, look no further."
"Engine room cottage is set in the picturesque village of Sledmere on the wonderful East Yorkshire Wolds. I know the area well, having grown up in nearby Driffield. We visit frequently to catch up with friends and family, but staying in a lovely cottage like this makes it into a proper holiday. it is the first time we have stayed here, but I am sure will not be the last. The property is immaculate, comfortable, modern but quirky, and extremely well equipped. If I am being extra picky, a small set of drawers, for storage other than hanging space, in the bedrooms, and lamps both sides of the bed would be ideal, but the ambience of the rooms and lovely views made up for that! The bed was comfortable, with high quality bed linen and towels provided - even towelling robes! There is so much to do, coast or country. We never run out of places to visit in the area. For example, the interesting Sledmere estate is a 5 minute walk up the road. We were lucky to have record breaking good weather, but even without that, I would not hesitate to recommend Engine Room Cottage as a perfect holiday base."
"Engine Room Cottage is a lovely spacious cottage converted from part of The Old Fire Station in Sledmere. As it's name suggests the open plan living, dining & kitchen area is in the large room which once housed the Fire Engine. Sadly there are no longer any Firemen in residence, but there are lots of Fire Station related bits and pieces! The accommodation is spacious and modern with 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, so ideal for larger families or groups of friends, with plenty of entertaining space. There is also a small patio where guests can sit and enjoy the stunning view over the fields to Sledmere. The property is well equipped with everything needed for a comfortable stay, and well located for visiting all the tourist hotspots of North Yorkshire as well as The Yorkshire Wolds."
"Engine Room provided an ideal break for three generations, six people and dog but it never felt crowded. The accommodation is spacious and well organised. It is fully and thoughtfully stocked with all amenities. The view from the back is spectacular and we were able to watch new born lambs jump about. Even in a spectacularly wet Easter week we were able to find plenty to do: Sledmere House is fascinating to visit (read the book by the present baronet's younger brother) and the farm shop and the Triton Inn are great assets."
"We stayed at the Engine Room with family friends. In total there were 7 people (and a dog!) staying. The house is absolutely ideal for entertaining large numbers of friends, being at once homely and warm, but also spacious and open plan. The decor is great - we loved the fire brigade touches - and everything has clearly been done to a very high standard. There are three separate bathrooms, again perfect for large numbers of guests, and the host clearly thinks of every detail for her guests. We had a hamper of goodies upon our arrival, and the house is kitted our with useful appliances like the Nespresso coffee maker. We will definitely be returning to explore more of the beautiful Wolds countryside. The house, by the way, had an incredible view right from the kitchen window of fields and rolling hills beyond, making for an ethereal and lovely sight on a bright wintry morning with your cup of tea! Sledmere is a fascinating village, with lovely pubs and a great history due to the huge country estate that dominates the place. Thank you for a wonderful stay!"
"Lovely, bright, modern accommodation. Comfortable and very well appointed. Great location to explore Sledmere itself, the East Coast and the Yorkshire Wolds. Would love to return."
