Grasmere is a village in the Lake District National Park, probably best known as the home of William Wordsworth, a place he described as "The most loveliest spot that man hath found". Any visit to Grasmere needs to include The Grasmere Gingerbread shop, where they have been making gingerbread for over 60 years. There is shops, pubs, a 13th century churcy and Grasmere Lake, plus Grasmere Sports takes place every August. 5 miles away is Ambleside and Lake Winderemere where you will find shops, pubs, restaurants and the 17th century Bridge House, which is one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District. Cruises, boat trips and watersports can all be enjoyed on Lake Windermere and the towns of Windermere and Keswick are also within driving distance. Grasmere is a wonderful base for your Lake District retreat.
Reviews
"The cottage is in a great location has a great layout and is spacious for a two bed. Beds very comfortable. Luckily had a very quiet bunch of people upstairs - I imagine a more noisy group would be a problem. Unfortunately what could be a great cottage is let down by some faulty/cheap appliances - for example dishwasher didn't always start, not enough hot water for a bath, chipped cups. Perhaps as it's on the market the current owners are not keeping it maintained as normal."
"We had a terrific stay at Wansfell cottage. It was warm, cosy beds, well equipped kitchen. Ambleside is a perfect location to explore around with many walks starting in the village. There is a great choice of restaurants and shops. The cottage was roomier than it looked from outside. The parking permit is great and there was never an issue finding a place within a few minutes from the house. All round fantastic."
"Excellent cottage with great amenities, lots of space and comfort. A washer, microwave and good utensils. It was a little difficult arriving in the dark searching for the key and the car space is impossible! Glad a permit was provided inside he cottage. No towels was disappointing when arriving late and from o/eases. I would stay again with towels provided."
"My family and I had a wonderful break over the Easter holidays in Grasmere , made all the better by arriving at this beautiful cottage . I was very surprised at just how spacious it was and it was also very well equipped . It was beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean . Location in the centre of Grasmere was perfect for us . I would definitley return and will be recommending it to my friends and family ."
"We thought Grasmere was a great location to base yourself in for the Lakes & were very happy with this cottage. We stayed there during Oct half term (2 adults, 2 children) and were very comfortable. It's well positioned in the village itself. The car parking at the back of the cottage is too narrow for most cars to get into, but they provided a parking permit for a nearby car park, so it was never a big problem. We didn't have any problems with noise from above. All in all a very happy stay."
"This was a late booking and the service was good. I know Grasmere so I knew that it was a very good central location. The cottage was spacious with 2 large bathrooms and a large kitchen and separate drying room . It was very comfortable. We did not take our car so am unable to comment on parking facilities. I have stayed in several apartments in Grasmere and this was certainly the best in terms of size, position and value for money. The only negative is that movement in the apartment above could be heard. Thankfully the people upstairs were quiet during our stay. The only other negative does not concern the cottage but our journey home on the Saturday . We arrived at Windermere station to be told that our train had been cancelled. A station supervisor asked everyone to wait outside the station for replacement buses. When the bus driver came he said that he was running late and would not be taking anyone. Faced with the option of a two hour wait with more people trying to fit on the station platform we decided to go back to Grasmere for the weekend and stayed at the Dale Lodge hotel which was also good."
"Lovely cottage in a very convenient position but lack of sufficient insulation between the cottage and the accomodation directly above means every noise is heard day or night. A number of comments have been made in the visitors book."
"great cottage, had everything you could wish for, clean and tidy, well equiped and a great escape from the rat race even though it was located in a quaint village, near to all local amenaties, some great gentle walks not far from the doorstep. One little problem we had which i am sure should no longer exist was that the back yard resembled a building sight with scaffolding etc all over the place as roofers were working on an building around the back, would have been nice to have been informed as sometimes we take our two young grandaughters and it wouldn't have been safe. that said we really enjoyed our stay and will be looking to return in the future."
"Lovely little cottage in a quiet location in Grasmere. Nicely furnished and quite roomy. We really enjoyed out stay. Couldn't park in the small parking space at the rear as our rental car wouldn't fit, but there was a parking permit provided for the nearby car park which was only a couple of minutes walk away. Only thing we found dissapointing was that there were no towels provided, which would ordinarily make it very difficult for overseas visitors like us. Fortunately we were with our son who lives in the UK so didn't have to purchase towels. Other thing we fond a bit strange was the requerst to strip down the beds before leaving."
"Fantastic location in heart of Grasmere Village. Very comfortable, high standard accommodation. We got a last minute deal which was a bargain for such luxury. Parking is tricky if you have anything bigger than a Peugot 107 but the parking permit was much appreciated and the car park a stones throw away! In summary - Just perfect!"
"Old Bakers Cottage is based in a great part of the lake district - quiet and away from the main road, but also close to shops and restaurants. There are a number of great walks to go on right from the front door. The cottage itself was clean, tidy and well-equipped."
"The Cottage itself was nice and fairly clean. The holiday however was completely spoilt by very noisy people in Bakers Rest above the cottage due to inadequate noise barrier between the cottages, with no warning of noise transition this in the brochure. If your looking for a peaceful relaxing holiday then Old Bakers Cottage probably isn't for you."
"lovely location and great cottage. Had one terrible night when noises from upstairs (washing machine we think!) went on until 2am. Otherwise great."
