Reviews
"This is a lovely little cottage, with a nice patch of outside space and views of Causey Pike (when it's not cloudy!). Ideally located for conquering some Wainwrights - we did Causey Pike and the Newlands Horseshoe, both from the front door - so pleasant not to have to use the car! The cottage was neat and cosy, and well equipped for cooking - vital for a good holiday in our opinion! Perfect for a couple to retreat from the world for a while."
"My wife and I stayed in this cottage exactly a year ago, and after the first night popped into the office in Keswick and mentioned to the staff about how cold it is in the cottage, this year my mother booked us a weekend away in the lakes as a pressie, when we found out it was where we stayed last year we were really pleased because this is probably one of the best positioned cottages we have ever stayed in, you can walk everyday from the front door, and walks for all levels, the pub up the road as always was fantastic for food and ale, this cottage is finished to a very high standard and we found the cleanliness ok, however the heat problem is still there, there is daylight all the way down one side of the rear door, and the front door is much the same which is creating a draft right through the downstairs, the remedy for this from whoever seems to have been to remove all the feed back in the visitor book that mentioned the problem ( i remember seeing 4 and adding mine) and placing a small radiator which is uselessand the fitted fire merely warms a small area of carpet.I would love to stay here again but in warmer times and would always recommend the place,I just feel this needs attention, one carpenter and a couple of hours should do it."
"Got off to a bad start - had to locate travel cot ourselves hidden away in the bathroom despite paying extra for it. We just manged to catch the office in time to ask about it, but poor phone reception, a lively 1 year old and a tiring 7 hour journey made it a stressful arrival. The general cleanliness was poor. There was a clump of hair hanging off the wardrobe, stains on the kitchen units, hair in the shower drain, dust mounting in the corners of bathroom, lampshades and on skirting boards. We got in touch with Lakes Cottage Holidays, and the cottage was eventually cleaned on Monday (not sure why this was not done before our arrival). First impressions left us with a grotty feel, which was a shame as the location was beautiful and the cottage had potential to be a great place to stay."
"The cottage itself is nice, lovely location and well equipped. I didn't realise that it was actually listed on TA before I booked it so read the reviews after. A common theme was the cleanliness of the cottage. I was not concerned as I thought it had been brought up more than once, surely this issue has been rectified... It has not. The cottage is in need of a serious spring clean. I think the cleaning company make the bed, and do a cursory wipe of the horizontal surfaces and that is about it. I took some photos of the dirt I noticed on the first day so you can make your own mind up whether you want to stay here or not. I did not call the cottage company about it as I didn't want the awkward situation of the cleaner coming back and cleaning while we were there to be honest. Paying customers also shouldn't have to do that on the first day of their holiday. It's frustrating really as it is one of the easiest things to get right when renting a cottage and every other cottage I have stayed In, (all booked through Lakeland Cottage Company) have been immaculate. Other than that, it's a nice cottage... a few little improvements and it could be much better."
"Clairgarth is a brilliant little 1 bed cottage with plenty of charm and a tasteful decor. Everything you need for a break away to the country side - very comfy bed and great bathtub. No wifi, although exactly missed. Stunning surroundings, secluded yet a short drive / very brisk walk to Keswick. Loads of great walks nearby, especially catbells. Would thoroughly recommend."
"Well appointed and gloriously located cottage. Mountains on 3 sides, and sits in Newlands Valley. Lovely walks available from straight from the door, including the ascent of Catbells for wonderful views of Skiddaw and over Derwentwater. The charming market town of Keswick is just 4 miles away. Many birds frequent the garden, and there is a good chance of seeing at least one of the pair of red squirrels that reside in the garden - throwing some hazelnuts outon the lawn in front of the big fir tree certainly rewarded us with great close views of a red squirrel eating a few hazelnuts, and then burying well over a dozen. he bed, bath and shower were all faultless, and cleanliness was fine. It is a delight, even on a wet day, sitting in the bay window looking out over the garden, river and towards the hills. T"
"We really enjoyed our stay. The cottage is in a lovely location with loads of walks from the door etc and the birds & squirrel in the garden were a real bonus. It is well equipped for cooking and the bath in the bedroom is a novel feature. We didn't eat at the nearby Swinside Inn but did walk up there for a drink a couple of evenings - decent beer, nice pub. However, there were a few things which collectively have led to me only giving a rating on 3 (a bit harsh and I would really say 3.5!). None of them in any way prevented us enjoying our stay and we would even go back to the cottage again but feel it's important to feed them back: 1.) The main thing was cleanliness on arrival. The cottage clearly had been given a bit of a clean and certainly was not dirty enough to warrant ringing up to insist someone came back to do it again or anything but (compared to some rental cottages we have had where the place is positively sparkling clean when you go in) it was a bit lacking. Specifically, it felt that the kitchen floor & surfaces & sitting area carpet had only been given a quick run over, there was a toe-nail left in the shower and there were quite a few old cobwebs along the beam above the bed (a 1 minute job with a feather duster I would have thought...?). 2.) the dial you turn on the sink to open the plughole is very loose and needs repairing. 3.) (A very minor thing) the key for the back door was not left in the cottage so we had to ring up the agency to get a spare one. However, they were most helpful and provided the key that afternoon, which we picked up from the office. However, all of the above notwithstanding we had a very enjoyable week."
"Fascinating little cottage with walks from the door. Nicely decorated and equipped. A little chilly for us soft southerns."
"Homely cottage with all mod cons, some good walks direct from the cottage including Causey Pike. Keswick nearby with a good selection of both mountain and gift/craft shops. The cottage provided a good base, somwehere warm and comfortable to return to after a hard days walking. Interesting feature the bath being in the bedroom but actually works well."
"Excellent location, great views of Catbells from the front...lovely garden area at the back with wonderful wildlife including Red Squirrals, Nut Hatches and Woodpeckers. Facilities in the Coattage were great, everything you could need and great decor too. Swinside Pub fantastic and only a 10 min walk max...food good and views from garden amazing. Fab place to stay!"
"Great location, sadly inside was only surface clean, felt as though it needed a thorough clean. Hot water tank leaked. Did not use water heater as switches too close to leaking water. Towel rail thermostat faulty, got extremely hot and broken connection exposed bare wires. Left note for management as these are both safety issues.Hopefully these will be rectified. However, would not stay there again."
"Ideal location peaceful and quiet amenities were excellent everything you could need for your stay"
"We have stayed here before so knew what to expect. The standard of cleanliness was not great but did not detract from our enjoyment. We were surprised at the absence of an adequate information folder e.g. location of recycling; use of immersion; location of key etc. The cottage and the location is wonderful however. If you want to cover the North Western Wainrwright fells this cottage is ideal"
"Would recommend this to any friends looking for great accomidation in a fantastic location"
"We hired a couple of bikes to get in and out of Keswick with. The ride takes about 30 minutes if you get off and walk up the hills, 15 if you don't. So, this place is right out in a quiet valley. There are other people around, but you don't really hear them. It's so peaceful. Inside, it's well turned out and spacious, and has everything you need for a relaxing break in the country."
