Reviews
"This was indeed far more than we had hoped for. The pictures fail to do the cottage justice. It is tastefully decorated and furnished through out with delightful enclosed private garden and off road parking. On the edge of the village only a two minute walk from Ullswater lake and all local amenities. No need to cook suggest you visit The Queen's Head, Tirril , excellent food with polite and friendly staff. Also, close to Dalemane house and gardens, Lowther Hall and Latch Cottage Nurseries all well worth a visit. We are already planning our return. Thanks for a lovely holiday."
"We had a superb week end stay in this lovely Cottage , well equipped and cosy with everything we needed . Log fire , garden and parking were all appreciated There is a restaurant next door and several Pubs within 100 yds and a five minute walk to the Lake making this an ideal location Many thanks for a fantastic break"
"We have just returned from a most wonderful stay at the beautiful Blacksmith Cottage. The property is maintained to a very high standard and furnished very comfortably. The shower is excellent after a long day walking and the bed is very comfortable. The garden is an idyllic little walled garden with grass and flowers, garden furniture is provided and it is a lovely area to sit in as it gets the sun for a lot of the day. Blacksmith Cottage has everything you need for a relaxing break in the Lake District and we definitely hope to return again one day."
"We loved this gorgeous cottage and were so lucky to find it at such short notice. We booked at midday on the day we were planning to arrive. The turn around time was fantastic and the cottage was all ready for us upon our arrival. We found it cosy and peaceful and just perfect for a break away from work where we could really relax. It was a great base for exploring the beautiful lake district. The cottage was clean and very well presented with good quality furnishings. After a day out walking we loved the fact that we could come back to the cottage and relax by the wood burner. The stocks of kindling and wood was replenished for us half way though our stay which we were very grateful for - Thank You! If you love to stay connected when your on holiday the cottage is equipped with wifi which worked brilliantly for us. We would definitely return and most definitely recommend!"
"This cottage is a real little gem. It is furnished to a high standard and has a wood burning stove if things get nippy ! We stayed in June during a bit of a heatwave and found the cottage a cool retreat because of the thick walls. The small garden is a delight ! Buy some bird seed and just sit back.! One thing to watch.. Not good if you have bad knees or any mobility issues due to the stairs to the bedroom. All in all, though, we couldn't fault either cottage or location."
"A lovely little holiday let for two. We arrived towards the end of a cold snap and found the place very chilly, but soon had the wood-burning stove fired up. The owners had put a very nicely decorated Christmas tree in a corner of the sitting room and there were seasonal lights around the mantelpiece, which made for a very cosy environment once the curtains were drawn. The place was spotless and finished to a high standard. The bathroom's underfloor heating, heated towel rail and shower were fantastic. The cottage's location was perfect for us and the silence and darkness gave us the best nights' sleep we'd had in ages. We couldn't find instructions for the storage heaters (we'd not used them before), so we were a bit chilly at first. We called the agent and the owner called us back a few moments later to tell us how best to use them. They still struggled a bit but we were much warmer thereafter. All in all, we had a lovely time and hope to return."
"Found this cottage on Google search. Looked exactly what we wanted for our September break. Saturday to Saturday booking suited us as well. The Cottage was easy to find, we knew we couldn't park outside the property but this is made clear in the details. The free parking is 50yards away and is ample. The whole area around the cottage was quiet and peaceful. The bedroom was very big and so was the bed which was very comfortable and there was plenty of wardrobe and draw space. The bathroom sorry, shower room had a double size shower cubicle with an overhead power shower, we found this a superb arrangement. The living room had comfortable chairs and sofa and a good size tv. Wi-fi was excellent and fast. Kitchen had all you need and the dishwasher was an added bonus. We also sat out in the pleasant garden a few times. The cottage is situated on the edge of a small village but nothing was more than 300 yards away! 3 pubs and two cafes (we tried them all and they were all excellent). A general shop, outdoor shop and a couple of gift shops completed a lovely village. All in all we couldn't have wished for better. I would suggest that this property is NOT suitable for people with disabilities especially if you have difficulty in climbing narrowish turning stairs."
"Such a lovely cottage - beautifully furnished throughout. And such a peaceful little spot - hardly any traffic passing throughout the day so perfect for long lie-ins!"
"Having enjoyed our stay so much last year we returned for another weeks break late January. Again we enjoyed a lot of great walking straight from the cottage. It couldn't be cosier returning to the wood-burning fire after a day on the fells. A very comfortable bed too. We plan to go again next year!"
"The hot water broke - it did get fixed however we never got a single apology. No welcome pack - there is some information which is very dated that is shut away in a draw. No bin bags provided. The cottage is rather cold - only has storage heaters which you can not alter and there is not one in the bedroom. Nothing terrible about the cottage but overall not a great one (and we have stayed at a few). We had a brilliant week but that was largely down to the splendid Lakes!"
"We had a fantastic stay at this beautifully decorated cottage and very cosy cottage. Views of the fields and hills and fantastic location just a couple of minutes walk from Ullswater. Thoroughly recommended!"
"We stayed at blacksmith cottage for a week in October half term. The cottage is beautifully done and very cozy inside. It is in a great location, right in the village with lots of great scenery nearby. We'll definitely come back."
"We loved the cottage, it was very cosy downstairs with everything we needed.Upstairs, the bedroom was a nice surprise as it was extremely spacious. The decor throughout was tasteful and it was a pleasure to stay there. The location was great for getting round the lakes,we even ventured into Scotland. It would have been nice to have had a small welcome pack with at least tea, coffee and milk."
"Blacksmiths Cottage is positioned on the edge of Pooley Bridge with views out across open countryside. Although directly adjacent to the road it has it's own private garden, a lovely cottage style garden to the side. Parking is also accommodated for a short distance away. The property appointed internally to a high specification with good quality fixtures and fittings ( John Lewis, Laura ashley ) Blacksmiths Cottage has been well laid out internally and is spacious for two people, with all the comforts of home. For those visiting in the winter months there is also a wood burning stove to ensure warm evenings. All local amenities are within a very short walking distance away ( inclusive of 3 Pubs ) and of course the beautiful Ullswater Lake itself. We would highly recommend Blacksmiths Cottage for couples. We had a great stay and will be sure to return in the future."
"We had a great week at Blacksmiths Cottage, it was so relaxing and the cottage was furnished to a high standard. The location was excellent and we cant wait to go back!"
"Very cosy cottage, very well equipped and beautifully presented. Excellent location only 10 minutes from Penrith, perfect for walking and access to the steamer and a perfect base for exploring the rest of the Lakes. Good food available in the village. Would definitely go back."
"This is a wonderful cottage in a quiet and peaceful part of the Lake District National Park. We had a fantastic winter break walking from the cottage itself which was the perfect tonic from a busy working life. The lounge is very cosy, filled with beautiful mahogany furniture and with a great log burning stove. Upstairs the bedroom is very spacious leading into a hotel spa level bathroom. It really couldn't have been more relaxing. The walks in this part of the country are second to none both at high and low level and there is a ferry service that runs very conveniently to both Howtown and Glenridding. We couldn't recommend this property enough for people who enjoy the countryside."
"Very cosy cottage with extrembly comfortable bed, double shower and log burner fire. Arrived on a very cold day and the owners had kindly put fire on and heaters but took a day for the cottage to warm up as been vacant for a week. Plus no hot water but owner did sort out temporary fix. Sofa not so comfortable and missed washing machine especially with cold wet weather and somewhere to store ice for drinks but small points as loved this cottage. Location very accessible for steamer across Ullswater and gateway to stunning walks. Pooley Bridge hotel served amazing food. Everyone extrembly friendly. First experience in the Lakes and very memorable."
"Lovely Cottage, just right for exploring the lakes, warm and cosy to come home to. Also Pooley bridge not crowded this time of year."
"The cottage is cosy, but spacious enough that 2 people are not falling over each other, and we enjoyed spending time there. It's furnished to a high standard, with a mixture of well chosen new and antique items. The kitchen is generally well equipped. We found the saucepans and utensils to be of a high standard, so perhaps they have been changed since the last reviewer stayed. The thing that was really missed however, was a freezer or an ice box in the fridge, so no no ice cubes for gin & tonics or freezer packs for pic-nic lunches. You should note that there is also no washing machine, should you need to do some laundry, but there is a dishwasher. The bedroom is spacious and the bed linen is good quality, but the mattress on the bed was too soft for us. The rain style shower is great. A previous reviewer mentioned that the hot water is pre-programmed, but it's very simple to get some extra hot water via the timer next to the hot water tank. For those that want it, the cottage has wifi, which wasn't mentioned in the description when we booked. One thing that could have improved our stay, would have been a "welcome tray" on arrival. After a long drive it would have been nice to have been able to have made a cup of tea or coffee without having to find the local shop first (which closes at 1730)."
"We were impressed with the business like approach regarding arrangements for our arrival at the cottage. The cottage was beautiful - decorated to a very high standard with a very comfortable bed and a modern bathroom which was clean and well presented. It was lovely looking out of the window at breakfast each morning and seeing the lambs in the field next to the cottage. The only challenges we had were with the heating and hot water as these were pre-programmed and the storage heaters didn't give out very much heat. However, there was wood and coal for the fire and throws in the living room plus a bedspread which meant we were able to stay warm. For those who truly want to self cater the kitchen was small and could benefit from some better quality pots, pans and utensils. Parking was very conveniently located and the village had no shortage of local amenities plus there was a steam boat down to Ullswater only a short walk away. Overall a very enjoyable stay and somewhere we would definitely go again."
"First trip to the Lake District, great walking and scenery. Everyone is very friendly. Blacksmiths Cottage was like home from home, clean, bright and we enjoyed relaxing in front of the log fire. We will definately return to this cottage. If you go, The Sun pub is literally 3 minutes away friendly staff good beer and good food, enjoy!!!"
"On arrival at the cottage we were delighted to find that it had been fully decorated for Christmas, with a warming fire, mince pies and a Christmas cake! The cottage is perfect for two people and the location very convenient for the village and all the local amenities. Whilst there is no parking at the cottage it's just a very short walk to the secluded parking behind the church. The steep stairs could be a problem for some older visitors."
"We loved this smart cottage, excellent location with great pubs(especially the Pooley Bridge Inn-fab food). The decor was great, not too chintzy, modern kitchen/bathroom,comfy bed in a big airy bedroom, everything you could need, and best of all beautiful log burner with plenty of logs.I think you should mention on the website that there is a parking permit inside the cottage for the nearby village hall carpark. We were a bit worried about parking until we found that!"
"We loved the log fire and managed to find an excuse to build it every night - with supplied wood. Garden was well looked after and we did manage breakfast outside a few days dodging the rain! The massive shower was bliss although by partner would have preferred a bath. Only missing things were a bath and a freezer of some kind. beautiful bedroom and bathroom, very comfy lounge and all geared up for walkers. Parking over the road at the village hall couldn't be easier. A few mins walk to the pub and shops and a not far to the ferry. I would definitely recommend this cottage and would also go back again. It was also very quiet for time of year - maybe recession keeping people away?"
