The tiny, pretty village of Noss Mayo is hidden away on the southern bank of the Yealm Estuary and is home to two good pubs. Across the water is the larger village of Newton Ferrers, and you can get between the two villages by a causeway at low tide and a seasonal ferry that operates a triangular route and calls in at the SW Coastal Path, Noss Mayo and Newton Ferrers. Newton Ferrers has a local butcher, chemist and Post Office. The village pub has fantastic views across the water towards Noss Mayo and the creek. The area is blessed with many walks that meander along the waterside and across the fields, while to the north Dartmoor's high tors and open spaces beckon those who love wild country. The city of Plymouth with its shops, Marine Aquarium and Barbican quayside area is just 10 miles away.
Reviews
"I am surprised I am the only person to have left reviews for Gillyweed and can only assume all the other guests are wishing to keep the secret from getting out that this is one very special place to stay. The stylish presentation is what sets this house apart and the location is just so idyliic with the water right outside the window. Watching the tide is so therapeutic. Being the third time we have stayed brings with it a pleasant feeling of knowing what we are expecting and we like ambling around Noss Mayo and Newton Ferrers. The Ship is the best pub in the area. Dartmouth and Salcombe never disappoint - two of our favourite haunts. The galleries in Dartmouth always seem to entice me to add to my collection of Richard Goodwin-Jones artwork and this visit was no exception. There are several of his pieces at Gillyweed and I now own another one myself. All in all, a wonderful visit and we look forward to our next - which we will be booking soon, just in case the word gets out and prevents us having the choice of dates........! Booked through Helpful Holidays - very easy and straightforward."
"We returned to Gillyweed as we love the location and the property is superbly presented. Our only slight disappointment this time was the poor quality of cleaning - none of the floors had been swept or washed, the kitchen stank of fat and the canopy was filthy. It was clear only a cursory clean had been done, which was a shame as it meant my holiday began having to wash the floors and give the kitchen a clean. Not really what you expect but I realise the letting company have to rely on others to perform the changeover but it should have been checked. That aside, we love the whole property which is decorated with interesting artwork and is very well equipped. Watching the tides makes you very lazy indeed.... long walks around the headland from Gillyweed are amazing and a great way to earn your stop at the Ship Inn for lunch!"
"It is not often you happen across a holiday home that is both perfectly located as well as being beautifully and stylishly equipped. This is it! The quality of the property is the first thing you notice and this creates a great first impression. I like being surrounded by good taste and this is evident here. Then there is the situation, right on the river and we were able to take our boat out each day from the slipway in front of the house. The ever changing tides provide a change of view and you could be really lazy and watch it all day. All in all, we feel we have discovered a perfect bolthole which we will definitely return to and highly recommend (although I hesitate to say that in case it gets so booked up we then cannot get our dates). Thank you for a wonderful stay!"
