Strete is a village looking over Start Bay just south of Dartmouth. The hills and countryside that encircle the village to the west converge on the memorable coastline forming one of the most visually striking images in the South Hams. There is a post office and general store in the village along with a lovely church plus the well renowned Laughing Monk restaurant. There is a small community area where you can picnic and walk your dog with its wildlife section and notable views of Start Bay. A few short miles in either direction brings you to the magical crescent shaped family beach at Blackpool Sands and the three mile stretch of Slapton Sands. Dartmouth lies on the banks of the beautiful River Dart estuary in the popular and picturesque South Hams area of South Devon. Located within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and close to the coast, Dartmouth is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Devon.
Reviews
"A wonderful place to stay, with beautiful views across the bay. Everything has been so carefully thought out and there are some lovely thoughtful gestures, such as flowers, milk and biscuits. Although the weather was not good, we enjoyed our stay. We kept warm with the central heating and log burner, and enjoyed watching the ever changing views across the bay. The bed was extremely comfortable and we had some of the best sleep for some time. The kitchen and bathroom are really well equipped and there is also a washer/dryer. We enjoyed delicious meals at The Laughing Monk and at Venus Cafe on Blackpool Sands. The local store kept us up to date with information on transport, as the snow had closed some of the access roads. We also bought groceries from there too. Husband enjoyed walks every day, sometimes across to Torcross and Slapton. Everyone is so friendly and helpful, and he really appreciated the lift he was offered by a couple at the Farm Shop near Torcross. Would definitely consider stayin again."
"We rented this cottage as a last minute booking and we cannot fault it . The views of the sea are fantastic . The road is narrow and winding but this is Devon not a suburban town I am surprised other guests have not expected this . .The garden is fully enclosed and very safe for our dog who came with us . The cottage is well equiped with wifi also available . Bed was clean and comfortable with plenty of room to get in and out .Both myself and my husband are quite tall and had no issues with the size of the cottage or any of the rooms . There is plenty to see and do in the area and we would definatley reccomme this cottage ."
"lovely cottage, fully enclosed garden for pooch.wonderful views of the beach.Kitchen had ample utensils etc.We cooked every day..and there was everything we needed. Good quality bedding and towels.Short drive to beach..you will certainly need a car! The Japanese Bath..i found very comfortable! Lots of little extras, like hair dryer, ironing board, guest soap and bath salts etc.Had a couple of small issues, which the Helpful Holidays team dealt with immediately! Hardly any noise from traffic, lovely peaceful secluded location, but only a few minutes to shop in strete."
"First, the upside. The cottage is in a great position for exploring Dartmouth, Salcombe, Slapton Sands and the South Hams. The views from the cottage are wonderful; straight out to sea in two directions. The upstairs living room is cosy and comfortable and a good size, and whilst the kitchen is tiny, it's adequate for a holiday cottage. We managed to cook an Easter Sunday roast leg of lamb with all the trimmings for two, but don't expect to cater a dinner party. It's well equipped but with an odd assortment of pots and pans; for example, four frying pans but three with rounded bases so useless on the ceramic hob. But now the downside. The road it's on is not too busy (so no problem with traffic noise) but it's narrow with bends and high walls and hedges, and the traffic goes fast. You would not want to walk along this road (indeed, one guide book to the Coastal Path in the property warns in capital letters that it is dangerous) so you have to use the car even to go down to the beach you can see below. And pay for parking. The bed in the main bedroom is comfortable but only about six inches clearance to the wall, so some acrobatics are required to get in, and the bathroom is tiny. The washbasin is so small as to be useless (and with a strategically placed shelf to bash your head if you try), but of most concern is the shower which gradually gets hotter and hotter as you use it. Given that a previous review from October 2013 on here mentions this I'm surprised the owners have not fixed it. It would be a fairly simple job for a plumber but in the meantime there is a very real risk of scalding yourself. Unless the owners can show it's been fixed be VERY careful in the shower and DO NOT LET CHILDREN SHOWER ALONE. Interesting to see that the property has disappeared from the agent's website that we booked it through; I can only wonder why."
"I have just returned from a week staying at this small, cosy cottage with my husband and small dog. It is situated on a cliff road and has beautiful costal views. There is no pathway along the road so it is not very safe to walk along especially with the dog and at night the road is unlit. This meant we tended to drive down to the beach car park or go further afield for walks. Despite being just off the road we did not find it noisy although this might different in Summer when the windows are open. The cottage has a good sized comfortable sitting room to relax in but the kitchen as describec in the cottage details is very small. It is well equipped but that leaves very little preparation space so it's not a cooks kitchen and only suitable to make simple meals. The bedrooms and bathroom downstairs are also compact. In the master bedroom the big, comfortable bed takes up nearly all the space and is difficult to move around because it is so close to the walls. The bathroom has a short, deep Japanese style bath which requires a certain amount of agility to get into and out of! It has a good shower overhead but the heat control moves around slowly as you shower becoming hotter so you need to keep turning it back to maintain a comfortable level. Overall we enjoyed our stay but my husband and I are quite small people and if you are tall this is probably not the cottage for you!"
